Welcome to the return of BuzzBeats. It’s been over a year since this segment has seen the light of day. But never fear, Madi is here to dust off and host the revival of one of the missing puzzle pieces of Seoulbeats. Now, this piece is back in its rightful place and monthly at that. So please look forward to hearing BuzzBeats at the end of each month, though this month is an exception and will have two episodes.
To begin on this new path, I reignited a conversation on the age-old topic: “How We Got Into K-pop.” Sure we talk about Korean music through our articles and reviews, but many may not know how we fell down the rabbit hole of Hallyu.
But our conversation is more than just how we got here. Karen talks about how the rapper in a group tends to be her bias, Lo points out how everyone is suddenly “the dorky one” when it comes to K-pop idol tropes, Jen highlights what occurred with TVXQ and JYJ and why it is important to her, Leesha brings our attention to how the idols ages tend to get younger and younger, and I share the struggles of being an international fan in the early 2000s.
And stick around after the ending to hear a round of us playing K-pop: Would You Rather.
Happy listening and see (hear?) you on the next episode! Feel free to answer any of the questions asked in the podcast in the comments below. We would love to hear your stories if you’re willing to share them.
