Being a film major and an aspiring screenwriter, I’d like to say I know what I’m talking about when it comes to films. That being said, “Mother,” written and directed by arguably the most talented Korean filmmaker alive, Bong Joon-ho, was one of the best films of 2009. Evidentally, CNN agrees.
“Mother” stars Kim Hye-Ja (aka Debimama from Goong) and Won Bin and tells the beautifully tragic story of a mother desperately trying to prove her mentally handicapped son innocent of a crime she is convinced he did not commit. With Bong Joon-ho’s characteristic shots of the Korean country side and it’s people, as well as the characteristic investigation into the darkest corners of the human soul, Bong Joon-Ho, who also directed Memoirs of Murder and The Host, has created another work of art that truly stands out from the idol flooded images of Korean entertainment.
Along with 9 other films, “Mother” is considered by CNN writer Tom Charity to be one of the best films of 2010, specifically 6th best. Being the only Asian film on the list, I encourage all of you hit pause on T-ara‘s “Yayaya” (I know it’s difficult since I myself am having a very hard time doing this, but please try) and check out this film instead.
