Best of Weekly Music Shows is back for more entertainment! This week we got comebacks from Hwang Chi-yeul, G-friend, and Iz, stirring up excitement on the shows with their new music. Cube Entertainment‘s new girl group (G)I-dle made their anticipated debut as well. With a variety of talent like this, you’re more likely to find new favorites among everyone.

Lovelyz took home a trophy on SBS The Show while Hwang Chi-yeul gained a win on KBS Music Bank. Winner earned another victory on Mnet M!Countdown. Twice won on MBC Show Champion and got a triple crown on SBS Inkigayo. Congratulations to all!

As I mentioned, I love variety in music shows because it exposes me to different artists. I also like sharing my favorite performances of the week through this segment, but if you care to share your picks, please comment below. Someone might agree with you.

Pentagon‘s “Shine”, MBC Show Champion, May 2, 2018

This song is so addictive and totally fits the energetic schoolboy vibe of the group. E-dawn sets the tone with his playful gestures on his mini keyboard. The other members keep up the pace throughout the song, feeding off each other’s expressions. It’s been over a month since they started promotions, yet Pentagon shows no signs of slowing down. Their progress will be interesting to watch.

Iz’s “Granulate”, MBC Show Champion, May 2, 2018

When I think of “Granulate”, my mind immediately goes to sugar — the actual sweetener. Food brain aside, the group sounds as saccharine as the title of this song. This is one of those bands that I’m learning about for the first time through music shows. They sound so ethereal with their gentle style. It’s like listening to a lullaby for adults.

Stray Kids‘ “Mirror”, SBS Inkigayo, May 6, 2018

The group chemistry can be seen in the way they play off of each other; nobody hogs the spotlight. The vocals were a little shaky here, but I don’t mind since it’s good to know they’re performing live. Their choreography matches the music well. Changbin and Bangchan open the song with a “mirrored” dance that I thought was clever imagery. It’s little touches like that that boost the appeal of the choreography.

GFriend’s “Time For The Moon Night”, Mnet M! Countdown, May 3, 2018

Another great group with solid chemistry is GFriend. This routine looks like it’s quite the workout. This is a reminder of how hard these girls work to achieve perfect synchronicity. It’s wonderful that this dance is more upbeat–it shows off the vibrancy and youthfulness of the group, which is an image GFriend nails.

(G)I-dle’s “Latata”, SBS Inkigayo, May 6, 2018

Nothing but good vibes here. Summer is about to start, but this group is ready to heat things up early. Given Cube’s history, I don’t want to get too excited too soon, but I’m really enjoying this debut. The styling is chic and feminine, with the lightness of the fabrics lending itself to complementing their fluid movements. Soyeon caught my eye the most with her strong presence that was enhanced through her rap.
