SNSD’s Japanese “Genie” PV

43

Next up on the Japanese crossover are the girls of So Nyeo Shi Dae. SNSD recently had their debut showcase at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo and with it they revealed the Japanese music video for their Korean hit, “Tell Me Your Wish.” Watch the music video here:

Thoughts on SNSD’s Japanese debut? Thoughts on the video?

the music video was okay. nothing groundbreaking though i did like how the “genie” theme was more literally portrayed in this mv than in the original

  • sierra

it was very underwhelming. i too liked that they had the genie theme down better, but i wish they had stuck to their circus or carnival concept. that had so much potential and was really quite a good idea.

also i thought they were going to release the pv september 8th. the 3d mv they filmed for samsung is their best so far. not because it’s in 3d, but because it was so much i mean it was just so much better. the costumes and quality the set. it’s their best mv.

  • Hrodna

    it’s not cute enough.

  • jaja

Thank god it’s not sugarpop cute! I like it so much more than the korean version and SNSD is sure to rock Japan!

  • eh

This was…bland. I the MV is I like, but they all look bored for some reason. I’m not one to pick on things like this – but Tiffany looks totally different.

They did a good job on Jessica. The make=up is nice, the hair, not so much.

  • Tae-Hyun

I found this video very lack-luster, nothing really special here. I don’t find the song to be all that great in Japanese or the video to be anything we haven’t already seen.

The only thing that stuck out to me was how amazing Yuna looked during the circus tent set up, and that was all.

Is it me or since SM bought those cameras for Shinee’s video they have been using them for every one of their artists comeback? Shinee, Super Junior (Yesung in No Other), BOA, now SNSD twice in the MV… Next will be for f(x)’s comeback?

  • ana

men they should have remake oh! Genie is not cute enough.

  • izzie

I love this MV! It’s simple and the girls look even more beautiful! I’m glad it’s not over the top cutsey! SNSD is already getting lotsa love in Japan! U go girls!

  • ZOE

I’m glad they didn’t go too cutsey for this MV! Just the right amount of cuteness and they’re super hot too especially Hyoyeon! I’m lovin’ the japanese version!

  • Dylan

Tiffany is hilarious when she tries too hard to be sexy (that hair toss, lol). Jessica seemed to benefit most from the makeover; she looks very pretty.

Overall, as others have already said, I thought the MV was underwhelming but passable – nothing glaringly bad.

  • Britney IsFierce

The song is weird and the video is underwhelming. Their dancing is feels lousy in this one.

    • oka~

      i agree

    • Amanda

To be fair, no idol groups in Japan concentrate on being good dancers. That’s what made DBSK stand out among the guys. Girls are just meant to be cute so this is an actual improvement on MM/AKB.

      • mambo

actually in Japan THSK is more know of as a ballad group. Their biggest hit “Doushite..” is a ballad.

I would not say “no idol groups in Japan concentrate on being good dancers”, it’s just different in style.

        • kammy

yeah, Japanese idol groups are more influenced by jazz dance. kpop is more popping/hip hop.

  • alexia

wow first time i found yoona really pretty, i like this in japanese more, it sounds better to me.

    • loversinjapan

i was surprised how pretty yoona looked too. totally unexpected.

  • daydreamingisfun

they are extremely hot in this vid not gonna lie XD. idk if i like the japanese version yet i think ill have to listen to it more.

  • mischa

Bland, and yikes…their pronunciation. I like the navy outfits, though.

Did Tiffany do something to her nose? It’s like the tip of her nose is longer and tipped downward.

  • 123grr

The sailor/navy outfits were the best part to me. I’d prefer this one over the original MV too.

  • sierra

I don’t know why but Tiffany’s line “I’m just your biggest fan” makes me laugh.

Someone said it sounded like they were saying zucchini and omg now I can’t stop hearing them say zucchini. lol.

    Zucchini I’m your biggest fan.

  • jenny

The pv is cute but their japanese is still horrible, it’s like theuy are singing in krean and making it sound like japanese and they keep singing zucchini wa.(they must love those zucchinis)
They seriously need to train their japanese because right now the only member who can handle interviews is Sooyoung.

  • J-May

Zucchini!! i heard tat too…i thought it was jus me hearing it wrong! LOL! the concept is there but the impact was not as big as the original… oh well, good luck!

  • Rini

I like SNSD and all, but LAWD their Japanese pronunciation makes me wince.

  • HaLee_Sakura

hmmmmm….i 4 one think they could’ve done better and that their original was much better than this……japanese doesn’t sound as gud as the korean (but dat’s how some other songs r 2)
Lol…i heard Zucchini 2; anyway, i’m no food critic so i’ll keep the rest of my thoughts 2 myself

  • hey

All the korean girl groups in japan have horrible pronunciation!

    • Amanda

Give them time. DBSK’s Japanese was pretty horrendous at one point too.

      • mischa

I agree about giving them time…but how about making sure their pronunciation is passable before releasing a Japanese song?

This song feels like they had the Korean pronunciation over the Japanese translation and they sang phonetically. Big Bang also don’t have great Japanese, but they’re getting there.

I think KARA did it best: go to Japan for a couple of showcases, come back to Korea and stay there for a few months to polish their Japanese, and then release the Japanese version of Mister. That way they most likely heard themselves speak and realized how much work they needed to do to improve their Japanese. When they did debut Mister, they were ready to conduct interviews and appeared more comfortable with the language.

        • Alexia

Yes Kara did have better pronounciation but snsd isnt offically debuting till september 8 they are also doing some showcases they arent offically debuted every group needs time to polish up I remmeber when dbsk debuted i cringed when I watched their first japanese pv but look how succesfull they are now. How long has big bang been there yet top and gd cant speak jap and rap in english in their songs.

          • chae rin

as usual, our number 1 snsd fan to the rescue. :D *sarcasm*

          • Alexia

@chaerin as usual my stalker follows me :) *note as said by you “sarcasm”

          • Lex

I could be wrong, but I think what mischa meant was you go and talk to people (and figure out how much better your Japanese needs to be) then make the video. An interview, maybe people remember, but the mv you’re stuck with for years. It’s more permanent, so you want to put your best out there.

  • Ning

I know SNSD has always been marketed as *ehm* man-fantasy, but I marvel how SM adjust the message for Japan here. The first part of the PV where the guy open up the tent and see lilliput-SNSD dancing and all legs, it just scream otaku-fantasy!

Or maybe I’m just looking into it too much.

  • kammy

    I keep hearing “Zucchini”??
And I can only identify Tiffany now based on the fact that she doesn’t look like any of the other members (process of elimination) What happened to her face?

  • Greg

Guys, I can’t seem to hear the Zucchini? Where is it in the song?

    • sierra

      listen real close at 1:30.

  • Katelin

Whats with the 360 degrees cameras? >3< (they remind me of the ones E! use to take pictures of celebrities on the red carpet)
I mean the look cool and everything but i think SME is kinda using it too much, SINee, SuJu, BoA, SNSD, whats next? f(x)? -_-"

  • ILOVESOOYOUNG

IMO they should get the heck out of Japan. Focus on a new album maybe?
