Where our most recent SB Mixtape on noise music left off, with NMixx‘s “O.O,” is where this new mixtape begins. This mixtape, however, addresses a related but not identical cousin of noise music: contrast music.
Hard raps alongside smooth vocal runs, unexpected genre switches, different songs literally stitched together into one track: contrast has been in K-pop’s playbook, for better and for worse, since almost the very beginning. Therefore, the playlist below is by no means an extensive collection of all of K-pop’s contrast music, or even the best of the bunch. SNSD‘s “I Got a Boy” and a good chunk of Red Velvet‘s discography are notable absences. However, this mixtape is designed to provide a small taste of the wonderful and weird world of contrast K-pop and K-indie have to offer. Bon appetite!
