Welcome back to another week of Best of Weekly Music Shows! We had many strong comebacks this week, including Red Velvet, Suzy, and BoA! In terms of wins, Momoland took home their second one on MBC Show Champion for “Bboom Bboom”, while iKon got their first for “Love Scenario” on Mnet M! Countdown. Jonghyun’s “Shinin’” achieved two wins posthumously on KBS Music Bank and MBC Show! Music Core. On SBS Inkigayo, Sunmi took another win for “Heroine”, while GOT7’s Jinyoung, NCT’s Doyoung, and Black Pink’s Jisoo also said their goodbyes as they completed their roles as hosts of the show.
Without further ado, here were our favourite stages of the week!
Gugudan’s “The Boots”, Mnet M! Countdown, February 1, 2018
Gugudan is still trying to find their colour, as seen from their experimentation with different concepts since their debut, and they’ve had various hits and misses along the way. “The Boots,” however, is certainly a step in the right direction. The styling of the members is elegant and mature, while highlighting the outstanding visual calibre of the group. This concept is further reflected in the choreography, their execution of which exudes precision and confidence. However, what this comeback does exceedingly well is putting forward the strengths of each of the members. Sejeong’s vocal abilities are pushed to the forefront, as usual, but members who excel in other areas, such as Sally in dance, also get their chance to shine with the incorporation of a dance break in the song.

Suzy’s “Holiday”, KBS Music Bank, February 2, 2018
This stage gave serious holiday vibes with the white and cerulean blue background strongly reminiscent of a summer vacation in Greece. Paired with Suzy’s bright yellow attire, it set the perfect tone for her relaxed and chilled comeback with “Holiday”. With only several backup dancers, the focus is really placed on Suzy, who holds her own with her sweet vocal color and fluid moves.

BoA’s “Nega Dola”, MBC Show! Music Core, February 3, 2018
No stranger to the stage, Boa seriously delivered with “Nega Dola”. I wasn’t too fond of the song, but her performance more than made up for it. With the stage lit up like a dance club, I really enjoyed watching her have fun up there singing her heart out and dancing seamlessly both individually and with her backup dancers. Her stage presence is absolutely incredible, and it’s really no wonder why she is so successful and respected as a solo artist.

iKon’s “Love Scenario”, SBS Inkigayo, February 4, 2018
Having finally made their comeback after way too long, it’s heartwarming to see such a positive response to iKon’s new chilled and laidback track “Love Scenario”. From the muted colors of their coordinated outfits to their sharp moves, this is definitely a well-prepared and polished comeback stage that the members and fans truly deserve!
Red Velvet’s “Bad Boy”, SBS Inkigayo, February 4, 2018
I have been waiting for Red Velvet to tackle a more sensual and sassy concept since forever, and they have delivered. The track, their girl crush style, the smooth choreography all fit perfectly with the overall velvet concept. The only thing that slightly detracts from their stages this comeback cycle is the slight inconsistencies and slip-ups for their stages, especially with synchronisation; hopefully, these will resolve with more practice!
