Happy April, happy spring, and welcome to another week of Best of Weekly Music Shows! While Show! Champion aired reruns from their 100th episode special this week, the other shows gave us a host of new performances to enjoy as groups like Crayon Pop, M.I.B., and SPEED returned to the stage.
M!Countdown aired a No.1 Artist of the Spring special, where 4Minute took first place. Elsewhere, Soyou and Jungigo won top prize on Music Bank, and Park Hyo-shin won on both Music Core and Inkigayo. Here are my standout performances from the week. Feel free to mention your picks in the comments!
SPICA’s “It’s Raining Men,” MBC Yesterday, April 5, 2014
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku-8ifqmCVQ]There isn’t really much more that needs to be said about SPICA’s vocal talent. This is a phenomenal group of singers, and I loved the energy they brought to a song that obviously requires bold and big voices. Plenty of the high notes during this performance are guaranteed to give you chills, and the bridge stands out for the harmonies.
NS Yoon-G’s “Yasisi,” MBC Music Core, April 5, 2014
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl25eGNFqgk]“Yasisi” is a song that manages to be fun and sexy, and NS Yoon-G plays the role of a seductress without it feeling forced. The dancing and stage work is admittedly simple and doesn’t showcase anything particularly daring, but it all comes together to be an enjoyable performance overall.
Block B’s “Very Good” and “Nanrina,” MNet M!Countdown, April 3, 2014
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weNWK2j3GLQ]If you wanted to enjoy a few throwbacks, M!Countdown is the show to check out this week. Block B made a brief return to the stage to perform “Very Good” and “Nanrina.” As usual, the boys brought a lot of charisma and did a great job hyping up the live crowd.
MBLAQ’s “Be a Man,” MBC Music Core, April 5, 2014
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUL1ingSS2Q]I’m a big fan of MBLAQ’s comeback, and this performance of “Be a Man” gives you smooth dancing, some amazing vocals, and killer styling with those blue suits. MBLAQ had solid comeback performances all week, so I’d encourage you check all of them out. I’d really like to see them take home a win for this song in the coming weeks.
Orange Caramel’s “Catellena,” KBS Music Bank, April 4, 2014
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM1OanXBSzc]If you still need convincing in order to check out Orange Caramel’s comeback, please do it for the food-oriented outfits. Burger-themed Orange Caramel was one of my highlights of the week. As an added bonus, this performance on Music Bank features a very entertaining cameo.
2NE1’s “Gotta Be You,” SBS Inkigayo, April 6, 2014
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-psFPM5WXA]On Inkigayo, 2NE1 kicked off a new phase of their promotions with “Gotta Be You.” I must be honest, I never expected the song to call for a slightly cute concept, but it actually works well. 2NE1’s dancing as unit has often been hit-or-miss for me, but I like the song’s choreography, especially since all four look like they’re enjoying themselves. Bom sounded especially great during her parts.
