I got my first taste of K-pop in late 2007. I was just becoming a Youtube junkie and searching for J-pop when all of a sudden I saw a video of who else but SNSD. I followed that link to many others and discovered Big Bang, DBSK, Wonder Girls and others. I seriously felt like Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, “A Whole New World!” From then on I became an addict. Don’t get me wrong, I still follow J-pop culture, but K-pop is just more “juicy” and so much easier to keep track of. Youtube is full of K-pop! The gossip is even better than here in the States. It also opened me up to social issues in Korea and made me think about Black-Asian relations and how the other half perceives my culture. And if you haven’t noticed, I love fierce-bada female characters like Varla from “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!”

Cult films, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, music, and strawberry wafers for life!

FAVORITES:

# Music: Flying Lotus, JDillia, Yelle, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, After School, Alice Smith, Bat For Lashes, The Cool Kids, Baltimore Club Music, Kid Cudi
# Movies: City of God, Pulp Fiction, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Jurassic Park, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, The Descent, Lolita, Memento Mori
# Shows: The Boondocks, Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Squidbillies, King of the Hill, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Chowder

I too am addicted to YouTube thanks to K pop. Discovered a year ago and it’s the best. Although not Asian, its has been an interesting experience witnessing, on a superficial way I know – but still getting to experience a culture that I’m not familiar with, but now find fascinating.

Re J-Pop, just literally started becoming aware of it (Arashi to be exact) but dont know where to start, but you tube maybe my best source? What the hell did we do before you tube, I wonder?

I feel you. A few of the writers here have separate blogs in which they talk about their personal interests. I was thinking of starting one as well to talk about my non stereotypical black female interests. Ex: Kpop, Jpop, Indie, Asia, foreign films, music, and just my p.o.v. on things. I really want to go to Japan as well. :)
