(The Great State of VA, soon to be DC (I hope))

I’m a proud cultural fetishist, if there is such a thing. I basically love researching and learning about movies, music, art that’s different from what I’m used to seeing and experiencing. I also glom onto things very quickly, so when I’m into something I am all up in its bidness. This was triggered by years spent in undergrad at a very large, diverse urban University in Virginia (VA Commonwealth University? Anyone? Whatever, Go Rams!) I learned a lot from my United Friends of Benetton. In particular my two best Korean who
officially brought me into the world of k-pop. Prior to that I would say my k-pop trajectory went kinda like this: Colbert Report —->Rain—->Who is Rain? Well he’s kinda cute, he sings?—–>not that well, but he dances?—->pretty well, but he acts? (downloads “A Love to Kill” and watches it in one sitting) aksduhfguissht, this is so crazyawesomechessyfunnysadohofcoursetheydieattheend, I need more NOW.

So, you may not realize it but writing for this site will probably be the one thing that keeps my day job from sucking the life force out of the left side of my brain, rendering me incapable of producing a single creative thought. It’s inspired me to apply to grad school and study international media, so maybe I use the cultural obsession to provide a career for myself? Korean music, heck, Korean culture excites me, and if I can contribute to more people seeing it and experiencing in the same way I do, then that gives me every reason in the world to want to write and participate in it.

FAVORITES:
# Music: Anything. And no, that’s not a cop-out answer, literally anything. I don’t even really have favorite artists or genres because, it’s just whatever I hear, I like, and it goes into my iPod. Movie soundtracks, video game music, rap, salsa, Bollywood, you name it. Oh and of course k-pop, which releases my inner 13-year-old teenager.
# Movies: The Color Purple, Coming to America. But I’m partial to action movies, so, the Indiana Jones Trilogy, The Dark Knight, every Disney musical from the 1990’s.
# Shows: 30 Rock (I liked it before it even became popular *whine*) and of course, my induction into k-drama – Boys Over Flowers. Pretty boys yay!)

Ashe, I loved your write up, keep thinking, same goes for me, while reading it…..my intro to K-pop and Asian pop music was less than a year ago and yet how did I live without it! My first drama was A Love to Kill and I was like …what the hell??? & yet it was addictive and couldn’t stop watching it….as ridiculous, crazy, far fetch, often sexist etc as they are, I bloody love K-dramas!

K -pop sets free the girly 13 year old in me too, who’s been locked away for quite away being in someone in her late 20s! Hoo hum, I embrace her with glee and enjoy the craziness and experiencing of a new culture with all the other fan girls.

Most of my friends do NOT understand what I’m on about and when I tell about the latest K-pop group or track there’s a lot of “WTF” lol. Because of this to me, it almost feels like I’ve joined some not so secret society that only people in the know are aware of & understand – i.e. fellow southies and such. – Anyway, thanks for the great site.
