Welcome back to another week of Best of Weekly Music Shows! With the Winter Olympics are still ongoing and with the lunar new year holidays, many music shows did not air this week. To be honest, though, I’ve been so focused on watching the Olympic figure skating events that catching up with music shows have sort of taken a back seat in my list of priorities (oops!). On the one show that did air, iKon won for “Love Scenario” on SBS Inkigayo. Despite not having broadcasted this week, KBS Music Bank awarded Seventeen a win for their latest release “Thanks” and Red Velvet took home another win for “Bad Boy” on Mnet M! Countdown. Congratulations to all the winners!

Without further ado, here were our favourite stages of the week:

Hong Jin-young’s “Good Bye”, SBS Inkigayo, February 18, 2018

What I really appreciate about Hong Jin-young is that she makes trot music accessible to everyone. Trot is a genre under Korean pop music and is characterised by its variety of vocal inflections and repetitive rhythms. Although trot is usually seen to be as music for the older generations, artists like Hong Jin-young have worked hard to promote this musical style for all audiences. In “Good Bye”, for example, she incorporates electronic instrumental elements to give the song a modern twist. Her fun performance with cute and simple moves make it easy for everyone to sing and follow along; this is a good place to start for anyone interested in learning more about trot music!

N.Flying’s “Hot Potato”, SBS Inkigayo, February 18, 2018

This five-member rock band gained lots attention with their latest track “Hot Potato” not just from fans who were seen to be waving one-of-kind lightsticks made of actual potatoes, but also from Agricultural Cooperative of Gangwon Potatoes which recently appointed them as honorary ambassadors of Gangwon province’s potatoes. Their song is certainly appropriate for the title, not just in terms of its title, but also in its catchy and fun style which will definitely have you jamming along with some potato chips on the side!

Golden Child’s “It’s U”, SBS Inkigayo, February 18, 2018

The lunar new year holidays always seem to put everyone in good spirits, and Golden Child’s stage of their latest release “It’s U” follows the lighthearted mood with enthusiastic choreography and big smiles on the members’ faces, complete with a new year’s greeting in the middle of their performance! Even though they have a uniform concept going on, they manage to keep things interesting with variations on each of the members’ costumes.

iKon’s “Love Scenario”, SBS Inkigayo, February 18, 2018

Despite a long hiatus, iKon has once again succeeded in capturing the ears (or hearts?) of the general public with “Love Scenario” as seen with its amazing performance on the charts. It’s easy to see why — musically, the song is the perfect chill track for the spring season, and performance-wise, the members are naturally very charismatic and confidence on stage that is complemented well by the soft pink hues in their outfits.
