Welcome back to this week’s episode of Best of Weekly Music Shows! Exo won big this week, taking home wins for “Power” on  MBC Show Champion, Mnet M! Countdown, KBS Music Bank, and SBS Inkigayo, despite several shows not airing their broadcast for obvious reasons.

Despite the fewer music shows this week, there were still many fun stages to watch, here are some of our favourites!

Exo’s “Power”, Mnet M! Countdown, September 14, 2017

“Power”, to be honest, was underwhelming as a title track. Its performance is perhaps its only saving grace — indeed, the choreography is extremely powerful, with playful moves juxtaposing sharp and strong ones to make for a fun stage. Of course, we can’t forget Kai’s solo dance break, as he shows off his mad twirling skills; all in all, this lacklustre song is bearable only with the enthusiasm of the members on stage!

Golden Child’s “DamDaDi”, MBC Show Champion, September 6, 2017

Perhaps it’s because I haven’t been paying much attention to this rookie group, but I still don’t quite understand the origin of the group name Golden Child — if there are multiple members, shouldn’t it be…Golden Children? On that note, the name of their title track “DamDaDi” is also a mystery, but its nonsensical nature only adds to the charm of this fun and adorable stage. Clad in bright outfits, the members of Golden Child jam it out on a colourful stage — it’s a little bit of a sensory overload, but in a good away. This song will definitely make you want to get up and shake along to the beat!

GFriend’s “Summer Rain”, Mnet M! Countdown, September 14, 2017

Opening with a classical piano tune with the pitter patter of the summer rain in the background, “Summer Rain,” from GFriend’s repackaged album Rainbow, presents an autumnal mid-tempo dance track showing off their angelic vocals. The stage screams GFriend, from the song genre to the powerful yet gentle moves and elegant costumes.

Wanna One’s “Energetic”, KBS Open Concert, September 17, 2017

Although I’m very glad that Wanna One is getting a little bit of a break between promotions, I’ve also missed seeing their performances blowing up on my personalised Youtube’s “Recommended” playlist. So you could probably imagine my delight when I found out that they had performed on KBS’s Open Concert — having performed this stage so many times, it’s great to see that they are pros at this now and are familiar with the spotlight. The members have each improved so much, with one standout being Guanlin who is just so much more confident now performing his rap part!

Pentagon’s “Like This”, KBS Music Bank, September 15, 2017

I have to admit, one of few things that I know about Pentagon is that two of its members, Hui and E.Dawn, are a part of Triple H with label-mate Hyuna. However, after falling in love with their jam “365 Fresh”, I vowed to keep my eye out for the ten-membered boy group. I am so glad that I did, because their latest comeback “Like This” is such a jam.

It’s more of a downbeat jam that plays with synthetic notes to deliver a slow burn, not unlike Seventeen’s “Don’t Wanna Cry”. The dark vibes of the song match the classy, elegant stage that shows off the group’s sharp choreography. What’s more, leader Hui actually co-composed this track (as well as certified bops Wanna One’s “Energetic” and Produce 101’s “Never”). Pentagon is definitely a talented group to look out for!
