Welcome back to the Best of Weekly Music Shows. Show Champion didn’t air this week, with MBC‘s Prime Concert airing instead. Girl’s Generation have kept on their “Lion Heart” winning streak, taking every trophy — except for The Show, where VIXX LR managed to snag their first win for “Beautiful Liar”. We saw comebacks from Purfles and Year 7, Class 1 alongside the debuts of girl group Unicorn and soloist Minwoo. These are some of my top stages for the week.

“Round And Round” Sonamoo, The Show, SBS MTV, September 1, 2015

Sonamoo’s first two singles may have been lackluster, but it looks like the girls are third-time lucky. “Round and Round”, their follow-up to “Cushion”, is exactly what they need. It’s sassy and fun while allowing their vocals to shine. Their disco choreography is what really cinches the performance though; it just explodes with fun.

“Broken Doll” Miwoo, M!Countdown, Mnet, September 3, 2015

“Broken Doll” is a heartwrenching ballad that gains everything when performed live. The beautiful modern dance is breathtaking to watch and admirable in its’ entirety. Of course, Miwoo’s vocals are the real star. There’s so much pain and passion packed into her performance, not to mention her range and her control. It is an unstoppable force of a song. The only thing more impressive than “Broken Doll” is that this is her debut.

“Cross The Line” Kim Hyung-jun featuring Ha-yeong of Playback,  Simply K-pop, Arirang, September 4, 2015

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPlT3BQLqKM]

My god, this might be the sweetest song this century. Hyung-jun is flawless here, the embodiment of the nice guy who gets the girl; his voice is alive with tenderness and rapture . There’s something magical about being utterly in love that “Cross The Line” bottled. While Ha-yeong’s rapping is unimpressive, her acting more than makes up for it, with her and Hyung-jun becoming my new OTP.

“Roll Deep” Hyuna featuring HyojongMusic Bank, KBS, September 4, 2015

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcF0FD-75Gc]

Hyuna’s greatest strength as a performer has always been her ability to work a stage, and nowhere is this clearer than in this performance of “Roll Deep”. She balances quiet aloofness with some serious death glares, resulting in the aura of not even having to try in order to rule the world. She owns the stage with a toss of her head, and her actual dancing is flowing but filled with strength.  Really, though, that hand on the camera says it all: Hyuna is queen, this is her world, and we just need to worship her.

“A Bad Thing” Purfles Show! Music Core, MBC, September 5, 2015

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pth948t82Iw]

Purfles has some of the most impressive vocals in K-pop. The amount of stablity and control they display in “A Bad Thing” is breathtaking. Even more impressive, though, is the perfect balance of the sensuality of the choreography with the gravitas needed for a song like this. Every movement, every note is filled with pain and conflict that results in a heartbreaking performance.

Those were my favorite stages of the week. If you think there’s some I missed, feel free to leave them in the comments!
