SNSD’s…Skinny Girl Problems?

166

“Let me have men about me that are fat,

Sleek-headed men and such as sleep a-nights.

Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look,

He thinks too much; such men are dangerous” – Julius Caesar Act 1, Scene 2, 190-195

In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Caesar voices his apprehensions regarding Cassius. Caesar would rather surround himself with fat, content men who would never bite the hand that feeds him, not Cassius, who simply strikes him as “dangerous” because of his “lean and hungry look.”

While Shakespeare may not have been thinking about K-Pop, I think he hit the nail on the head when he was essentially suggested that skinny people can’t be trusted. And our offenders this time are the gorgeous goddesses, pretty princesses of So Nyeo Shi Dae.

Alright, so I don’t actually believe that skinny people can’t be trusted, but recently, in response to news that they consumed only 1200 calories a day, the girls retorted with laughs, claiming that they ate more than three meals a day, more than Super Junior, and around 3, 000 calories a day, and this all sounds incredibly suspect. It has almost as much truth as me announcing that Dong Bang Shin Ki’s Yunho and I are actually getting married this Sunday.

SNSD has been both praised and criticized for their weight. While some people praise their thin figures that could make paper bags look like haute couture get ups, others have criticized their breakable frames that could snap in half if the wind was too strong. Naturally, as public figures, these girls are bound to react to both the praise and the criticism. In response to the praise, I’m sure they dance around their dorm rooms reciting William Carlos William’s “Danse Russe.” But in response to the criticism, they are trying to convince us that they’re Fatty McFat Fats by letting us in on their enormous, unhealthy diets.

Does anyone else feel like a jerk besides me?

They eat five meals a day. Okay, great, dandy. But just because they eat five meals a day does not mean that they are stuffing their faces. In fact, according to research, the more you spread your food out throughout the day, the more meals you eat in a day, the better and healthier it is.

They spend more money on food than Super Junior. Again, great. But just because SNSD spends more money on food than Super Junior does not mean that they are eating more than Super Junior. In fact, all it means is that SNSD likes to spend more on their nom time than Super Junior.

They eat at least 3, 000 calories a day. I’m going to put my foot down and cry blasphemy on this one. I eat around 2, 100 calories a day and I’m still fatter than the biggest SNSD member. While there are these things called high metabolisms, what are the chances that SM Entertainment managed to find 9 girls with metabolisms that work at the speed of light and put them in the same group?

I’m not trying to say that these girls are opting to maintain their figures with poor dieting and god knows what, but insisting that they are able to maintain their figures eating whatever they want, whenever they want is just as worse.

It’s just as worse because I don’t believe they’re being a hundred percent honest. As idols, whether they like it or not, whether we agree or disagree, they are role models for the girls of Korea, Japan, and as of their global expansion, the rest of the world. And while the idea that they can do whatever they want with their bodies is amazingly magical, it’s not true. Everyone, regardless of the way their body works, needs to take care of their body. Telling the world that they eat a lot just to combat rumors that they don’t eat isn’t really the best thing to do because either way, they’re insinuating that they still don’t take care of what they eat. On top of that, they’re making it seem like it’s possible to remain thin and eat as much as they do. While it may be possible for some people, it sure as hell is not possible for everyone and it’s just another version of unrealistic expectations of a woman’s body.

But maybe a bigger problem is the preoccupation with weight in this industry and the rest of the world. The way we look, from weight to height to a plethora of other details that make up our overall appearance, is something upon which we judge ourselves and judge others. The girls of SNSD should not need to defend their figures, regardless of whether people are claiming that they are too fat or people are claiming that they are too thin. Hell, no man or woman should.

Sadly, this is the reality of K-Pop and to be fair, the much larger world that we live in. It is sad that SNSD feels the need to defend their thin figures at all, especially with these highly improbable idea that they can do whatever they want and still have runway ready bodies. Either way, SNSD, I’m having trouble believing your #skinnygirlproblems.

I think the writer completely lost herself in her opinion and ranted 60% of the way. The issue was “Does SNSD eat 300 cals a meal approximately 1200 cals a day”. And they responded with something akin to “we eat about 1500 – 3000 cals a day.” It was not pegged to at least 3000.

Okay you eat 2,100 and you’re still fatter than the thickest member in SNSD. Question is, do you have the same physical activities as them? training regimen? exercise? Unless you have more or less the same physical activity as these girls then you’re just setting yourself up to be a beluga in the future.

The types of food you eat are also a factor. We all know the average korean restaurant or dish serves meals that are a lot healthier than what is easily available in the west. If you try 2.1k cal in the form of french fries, then obviously you’re getting more oil into your body over say 2.1k cal in the form of kimbap, bibimbap and ddeukboki. You’re probably eating carb heavy foods as well.

And if you’re asian, 2,100kcal is a lot. The 2k calorie a day was basically based on the metrics for caucasian bodies. Ideally for women they should eat at least 1.2kcal to be called healthily eating.

Again I reiterate, physical activities remain a big factor in which they could consume a lot more because they burn a lot more calories than the average person writing an article for internet websites.

Around the 8:55 mark yuri’s trainer says her calory intake has been bigger lately. I feel people exaggerate about snsd being “breakable”, they look fine and healthy to me. I do think sooyoung should put on some more weight but I know that it’s always been hard for her to weight cuz that’s just the way her body is.

    • Anonymous

YoonA looks perfectly fine to you? She’s a skeleton. Her cheeks are completely sunken in. It’s uncomfortable watching her perform.

    • Alice20

Weight and health are not subjective things. If you look up the girls’ heights and weights, and find out their BMI (body mass index, a measurement system used my medical professionals), you will find that the girls are indeed underweight.

The reason why you’re fatter than SNSD even though you eat lesser than them is because you don’t experience the kind of schedules they have. To lose weight your calorie intake has to be less than the calories you lose per day, and you’re already calories (1000~1500 if I’m not wrong) everyday even without exercising. With SNSD’s schedule and practices they go through, it’s not that hard for them to lose 1500~2000 calories for it to be balanced. It’s much easier for you since you eat less.

So just put in more effort and exercise more instead of sitting down and typing up redundant articles like this.

Maybe, they don’t lounge around blaming skinny people for the world’s problems on their keyboard while inhaling donuts and rocky road ice cream like some writers…
Did you ever consider that they probably work off the fat by practicing, working out, and performing?

    • saylor

actually no…we all just assumed they were being forced by their company to be on diets and watch what they eat and photoshop was the reason they had all had the same looking legs.  But I guess performing like a robot on stage means you burn a crap ton of calories…that explains why their performances have been sucking ass lately.  But oh well at least they have gorgeous stick thin bodies for everyone to drool over and glamorize.

You’re a terrible, fucking person. People like you are the reason people develop eating disorders.

      • Anonymous

And you have shit for brains to think that obesity is not a problem… If you’ve ever been to Korea for Amy length of time you would know that most Koreans have a pretty healthy eating habit… I lost 14lbs when I visited my family in Korea 6 years ago for the summer. My cousin actually gained 20 lbs while studying in the states… Let’s face it, we in the west are more prone to label people with healthy eating habits and active lifestyle as having eating disorders when the fact is, we’ve become used to the fat body type as a country… Look at the portions of meats and carbs we eat compared to a Korean diet…

The mystery: How do you eat as much as they claim they do and continue to lose weight and develop zero muscle mass? Especially with all the dancing they do. Very odd.

    • Anonymous

Coming from personal experience, you need to eat enough protein to not only repair muscle tissue but also to add additional muscle tissue. It all depends on what type of calories you are taking in, fats, proteins, or carbs. I’m guessing that they’re eating enough protein to just maintain, not gain more muscle mass.

its beacuse they are idols.. IDOLS.. if u into Japan entertainment industry u’ll get it. its not “lie”… Japans idols refer idols as someone who gives hope to other, someone who will never lie about their love to their fans someone who always smile someone who never speak too higly of themselves!!!!!!. I do actually think that term IDOLS that korea used is base on Japan’s term of idols. although their packaging r different. so its not a lie.. can’t say its the truth either…

SNSD can’t say they only eat a cucumber in d morning cuz it might frighten their fans i guess…

Generally I agree, but actually, I think it might be possible that they’re eating 3000 cals a day.  Call me crazy, I know.  But honestly, the recommended intake for a woman on five to six hours of cardio a week is 2000 calories.  If they’re dancing as much as they make it seem, then 3000 calories and a figure like that is doable – possibly even likely.  All I can say is, my bff is 5’3 with a total SNSD figure – she works out about 12 hours a week and eats totally unbelievable amounts of junk food (honestly crazy amounts).  If 12 hours a week can keep her in that shape, then I’ll totally buy 3000 calories for these girls.

  • https://me.yahoo.com/a/zs7ITR93moWQEekTSwzTHR9j1u.Z2xEl0w--#542b8 LoL

i won’t call blasphemy, but i did call bullshit the moment i read their interview.

i know asians tend to be skinny, but they’re more than skinny. they’re probably size 2-3, and they probably weigh 85 lbs in average. they’re taller than the your average asian too, so i don’t think they’re eating healthy, seriously, there’s no way they’re eating more than 1500 cal a day.

i see their performances all the time, trust me, there’s not much training and practicing going on. so, scratch that cardio bs off your list.

not that it matters anyway, there are other girls in KPop that are much skinnier than they are, but other people don’t seem to give a shit. if they lie about their eating habits, it’s fine. all girls are like that anyway, we like to pretend that we just naturally wake up in the morning with hair extensions and eyeliner on.

  • Kelly

Ok, my response to their interview? It’s not really possible. I eat, on average, 1800 calories a day and work out once a week (yeah, I know, I’m lazy…but that’s mostly because of the CRAZY amount of schoolwork our school (in HK) gets – even the local school kids pity us :P). Anyways, despite me eating almost half the amount of calories they consume a day, I’m still fatter than them. A little. But still fatter. :P It MUST be their metabolism…they must practice those dances like, eight hundred times a day. The dances are really in sync and always perfect so I think that they must practice a lot and get their metabolism from that. :)

By the way, the minimum amount of calories a woman must eat a day is 1200 so they’re not THAT far off I guess…if they do eat 1500 a day (it’s not 1200, it’s 1500 according to their trainer) so yeah…

  • http://xmiochanx.livejournal.com Amy

I personally don’t think they’re curvy to say the least. I mean for god’s sake, remember that incident when that video was posted of Yoona, comparing her weight from one Hoot performance and a more recent one, and she was beyond overly skinny? Yeah. I mean, Yoona, it’s not like you were fat before.

I’m not considered fat and I am around 10-20 pounds fatter than the ‘fattest’ member. I am also shorter than some of them, I’m only 5’4, and though I weigh more than all of them (not put together though XDDD no way in hell I would be that fat), my weight is healthy.

No offense, I’m a huge SONE, but I still think they need to have a bunch of jumbo burgers stuffed in their mouths (sorry), and a lot of other female k-pop & j-pop singers / idols do to.

Call me crazy, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Korean / Japanese singer that was over 120 lbs.

Also, 3000 CALLORIES? Are you fucking with me? I eat around 1900 – 2500 per day, even less than they supposedly do, and I still weigh more than them. Pfffffffffffffffft. 3000 calories? Try more like 1000-1500 calories. Nobody’s metabolism is THAT fast.

  • Angel

LOL. I’m not a huge fan… I don’t look at fancams or pictures of them very much, so maybe I’m missing something. But personally, I think they’re fine. You don’t have to agree with me, but let me explain why.

First of all, SM wouldn’t starve their talent. With the amount of schedules those girls do, if they were only eating 1500 calories a day, they wouldn’t even be able to stand up, much less give a concert or fly to three countries in one day. True, other people may be eating 2000 calories a day and still think they’re not as fit as SNSD, but one has to take into account their lifestyles. Active lifestyles need lots of calories. Michael Phelps eats something like 10,000 calories a day, and look at him. When you think of someone like that, and you look at SNSD’s schedules, does 3000 calories a day really sound that unreasonable now?

I agree that at LEAST 3000 calories a day is probably an exaggeration. I’m not a health expert, but I have taken courses in nutrition, and I would estimate anywhere from 2800-3200 calories a day for them. Not to mention… I know quite a few people who are naturally skinny. It’s really not all that uncommon. I’m one of those people who are naturally skinny, and people often tell me, “OMG, you’re soooooooo skinny!!” But in reality, even though I’m on the lower end of the spectrum, I’m still in the healthy height-weight range according to my doctor. I also know some people who literally eat heaping plates of food at lunch and are STILL pretty darn skinny.

SNSD isn’t as tall as you think either. The heights shown on most Internet forums place the tallest, Sooyoung, at around 5’7″ (170 cm). Usually, these heights are exaggerated by SM as well, anywhere from 3-7 cm, or 1-3 inches. Their heights are actually pretty average for Asian countries. It’s camera techniques, smart coordi-unnies, PhotoShop, and general perception of celebrities that make them seem so much taller. Official weights are often dropped as well, by 3-5 kilograms, or ten pounds.

Some people will still read this and go “OMGURSUCHALIARITSIMPOSSIBLEDIEDIEDIE” and frankly, if you’re one of them, I can’t help you. But whatever. This is just what I think.

    • Angel

By the way, I’d like to point out that this article isn’t as bad as others I’ve seen. The author brought up some good points. But seeing different perspectives are important to forming a good conclusion about anything that’s subjective.

now that i think about it , I didn’t eat much at all … didn’t eat breaky , ate a small size lunch and few mini nibbling snacks and that was it for the day.  and for them to say they eat 3,000 Calories  a day ?  woooh tahts alot … im 20 now and i eat not even 2,000 calories a day … and im no where 50kgs . sooo how does this work snsd ?

3000 calories a day is probably an exaggeration. But there are people who eats a lot YET don’t gain weight. Personal experience: I eat about 2500 calories a day, plays squash once a week but I’m still not gaining weight! I’m 160cm and 41kg. My doctor said that it’s a genetic issue and not a diet issue in my case. I’m just saying that it is not impossible to not gain weight even if you eat a lot.

    • HAE

160cm and 41kg and you eat 2500calories a day!? GO AWAY!

  • tiffany

The thing is, I can sort of empathize with them. Back when I was 163 cm and didn’t exercise much, I only   weighed about 45 kg. I ate a lot, but everyone would always tell me, I need to eat more, and I’m all skin and bones, and that really annoyed me, because I was eating healthily. I was just born skinny, and that’s not even really a good thing. When I was still a kid, I couldn’t find jeans that were my length and fit, and I always had to adjust the waistline to make it tighter. I couldn’t even wear certain clothes because they made me look sort of malnourished. Trust me, it’s not fun being that skinny. I still wish I was curvier, because here in America, it’s considered attractive.

And also, while it’s important to respect people of all body types, if you’re obese, you SHOULD attempt to lose weight (healthily of course!) because obesity is connected with a whole plethora of health issues. I don’t know about Korea, but according to the CDC, approximately one third of Americans are obese. Approximately 3% of America suffers from an eating disorder. I think exercising properly and eating healthily should be promoted A LOT MORE than it is now, and the idea that obese body types are okay should be toned down, not because of beauty standards, but because of general health.

I’m not a fan of SNSD – but as a former ballet dancer, let me tell you I ate around 3000 calories a day and never gained an ounce (and stuff like pasta and ben and jerry’s)….until I tore a muscle and quit dance. Now I eat 1500 calories a day and I’m about 20lbs overweight. Dance burns a hell of a lot of calories, and if *I* danced over 20 hours a week as a amateur, I can guess at how many hours a week they dance. My sister’s in a ballet company – she’s 5’1.” 110lbs, all muscle (seriously, not an ounce of fat on the girl). And she out eats her 6’2″ ex-navy husband. I have no idea how these girls actually eat…but I find 3000 calories totally believable if they are serious dancers.

  • Anonymous

I agree, it is kind of weird.

But remember, SNSD performs and works their butts off and they’re probably burning off all those calories. Concerts, performances, festivals, they’re burning all of that off. And they most likely don’t eat 3000 calories a day. Maybe every now and then.

  • http://twitter.com/00erica00 Erica Chan

I think its safe to say the Asian standards of ‘skinny’ and Western is very different. I’m Asian myself and I have to admit, if I stick to only eating Chinese food, I can eat a lot and not gain weight (due to our consumption of fresh fish, vegetable and long-boiling soup). Also, SNSD has been working like crazy for the last few years, I’m pretty sure even if they DO eat 3k calories a day, the rigorous exercise from holding so many concerts probably balances it out, in fact, I might be worries about them fainting on stage due to low sugar levels if they didn’t eat too much. It’s also common knowledge Yoona and Sooyoung stays skinny no matter how much they eat thanks to their high metabolism (they are so lucky ><).

Maybe if you try cutting down on the fast food,,,?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Grace-Shen/100000888923875 Grace Shen

    Um, weeeeeeeell.
With all their dancing, lack of sleep (thus, lack of time to get fat…), and continuous transporting to and from places, it’s pretty hard to not maintain a figure like they each have. They’re not ridiculously skinny – if one of them is around 5’4″ and 100 lbs they’re still in the right range. They are not as skinny as people suggest them to be – and definitely not as skinny as their profiles say they are. So it’s totally possible that they eat 3000 calories a day and still don’t get fat. Plus, they also exercise apart from dancing, so I don’t see why they can’t claim to eat 3000 calories a day. ._.

Also, being asian, the food is different, thus the ingredients are different (eating 3000 calories of healthy food is different from eating 3000 calories of McDonalds), so they could just not gain much weight. There aren’t many asians who are much different in body shape than SNSD, to be honest.

  • Dont Be Jealous

Contrary to popular belief, eating more calories will not necessarily make you fat. It’s the quality of the food (hello to the glycaemic index). For example highly processed foods will ‘make you fat’ faster than whole foods. One can eat a larger amount of whole foods that are not processed as much compared with the effect of junk food. Did you know that eating white bread will spike your blood sugar levels as fast as eating table sugar out a bowl will? Eating healthily is expensive and not convenient so nowadays, its often we find that the poor are fat and being portly isnot necessarily a symbol of being successful.
ok. lol, a health tirade worthy of my mum. this kpop fan would like to add that with as much as snsd does (schedule-wise), if they are eating well, their gorgeous bodies are deserved. stop hating so blatantly and work up the courage to turn your own life around if you profess to being ‘fat’ amd eating less than they are.

  • Aol

I am a 27 year old female that has a one year old child.  I am 5’5″-5’6″ and weigh between 105 and 110 (it changes daily).  My chest is a 30c or 30d depending on brand.  My waist is 23-24″, not sure of hip measurements (I am proportioned).  I eat… non-stop.  I don’t gain weight.  If I eat just three meals per day, I will be on the heavier side of my spectrum, but if I eat all day, I gain NOTHING or I lose weight.  This is a quick metabolism.  It runs in both sides of my family, although my mother’s got slower as she got older.

By the way, the foods I eat- I can eat all the processed crap I want or as healthy as I want, and it makes no difference with my weight.  I’ve been a vegetarian for 10 years because of animal rights and human rights reasons, but was eating mostly processed foods and pastas.   I started eating healthier lately, because strokes and heart problems run in the family, but it hasn’t affected my weight.

I did gymnastics when I was younger- had muscle, and STILL no weight gain or loss.

Stop the judgement on all sized people.  Please.

I eat.  I did not get a breast augmentation or w/e it’s called.  I am a size 0 and I am healthy.  I also NEVER exercise (I have to start, for health reasons.. but I don’t want to drop to under 105).

  • http://twitter.com/Harukogirl Jessie S.

I’ll make it really simple. I’m 5’2″. I’ve overweight now, and eat around 1500 calories a day (I count – it fluctuates, but that’s the average).

I’m 27 now, and could really use some more exercise…cause I KNOW it works. Between the age of 3 and 17 I did ballet. I can remember one summer coming home EVERYDAY from ballet workshop and eating an ENTIRE pint of ben & jerrys (that’s around 1200 calories, and that was just my after ballet SNACK). I did not gain an ounce that whole summer. I took a two week break from ballet, and didn’t change my eating habits…gained 8 pounds. Went back to ballet class when the fall session started…weight melted off in under 2 weeks. You dance like I did (and I’m guessing they put in more hours a day than I did), you stay stay small no matter WHAT your
metabolism  is. And for the record….mine’s not that great.

Sure, metabolism and what you eat certainly makes a difference with your general health – and when you’re dieting and trying to lose weight (hello, I should know. Been there for 8 years)…but when you dance over five hours a day, you can put just about anything in any type of body and stay slim. I know THAT from personal experience too.

you can eat as much as you want as long as you exercise. i eat primarily healthy food with some junk food counting more than 3000 calories a day and i have a great toned figure because i work out 4-5 times a week. snsd have personal trainers who work with them 3-5 times a week for at least 1-2 hours to maintain toned figures, weight&body fat doesn’t just magically happen because of different food intake, plus in a lot of cases it doesn’t even matter as long as you’re active and building some muscle to help you burn off fat.

This article’s bias(/jealousy?) is pretty outrageous, honestly.  I’ve always been naturally skinny my entire life: I subconsciously gravitate towards healthier options (I love fruit & granola, white > red meat, for example), and I prefer to eat regular snacks through the day instead of set meals, but I have always eaten a ridiculously large amount of chocolate & unhealthy snacks. And the weirdest part is that I’ve never been prone to exercise at all (in fact, I almost failed gym throughout elementary school because I didn’t participate, lol). But guess what? I never gained a pound.

These girls clearly work hard every day with all their exercise/dancing/practicing, and they’re obviously really busy with events, concerts… So, it’s not weird at all that they’d stay thin.

Honestly, this writer needs to stop projecting. Not everyone gains weight as easily as others.

Working out increases your metabolism greatly.
And with hours of training i’m not surprised that they can wolf down portions that would put me to shame.

Their body and stamina is the result of their diet and training.

    You.

Grow up, get off your couch.

Why is it impossible to put 9 fast metabolism girls in one group? Korea isn’t that small, you know -_____- and also, with their tight schedules and tiring trainings, it’s not surprising they eat more than 3000 calories and still remain in shape. I mean, I eat TONS, literally tons, eating is my hobby when I’m bored X) but I have fast metabolism. :/

I’ve heard some people say they can’t buy clothes in korea because the sizes are too small.  haha.  Anyways a combination of being continually busy, likely lower sleep hours, and large amounts of stress puts a lot of stress on the body.  I wouldn’t be surprised if they went through 3000 calories a day.
If the body is continually subject to increased stress and the need to burn more calories to compensate it will adjust.  On average during the day, even at less stressful times, the body will burn more calories because that’s what it’s used to.  It goes in reverse as well…if you stop doing increased activities but still eat the same the body slows down because it doesn’t need to burn calories and that’s when people gain weight (in some cases).
I don’t know if you’ve seen some athletes that if they take a long break or quit or whatever from a sport they sometimes end up gaining a lot of weight because body is subject to large amounts of exercise and increased stress that they Were used to.
People who aren’t necessarily very active still lose weight often due just to high stress situations.
As for having a larger food bill than SUJU, in response to your comment, I would find it hard to believe that just buying more expensive or more/extra food would really equate to 4 people (9-13).  I’m more inclined to believe that snacking and multiple meals and actually eating more is going to cover that 4 person expense gap.

But I guess everyone can believe whatever they want and few people will know the truth……and the world keep going ’round.
