Netizens call for ban of Plagiarism embroiled composer

Netizens are starting a petition to ban popular Kpop composer Kim Do Hoon.  Many of you might be thinking who the heck is Kim Do Hoon?  You might not know his name, but you all definitely know ‘his’ (I use that term loosely based on the circumstances) songs.  Kim Do Hoon is the composer or co-composer of SG Wannabe’s “Sin & Punishment,” “8282″ by Davichi, Gavy NJ’s “Can You Laugh With Tears,” Lee Seung Gi’s “Let’s Break Up,” and C.N. Blue’s “I’m a Loner” all songs that have been accused of plagiarism.

The most recent plagiarism controversy surrounds Kim Jong Kook’s song  ”Can’t Forget” another of Kim Do Hoon’s ‘compositions’ off of his new album Eleventh Story.  Critics say that Jong Kook’s song sounds exactly like Usher’s “Love in the Club.”  I have to say our SB readers are among the most savvy out there in Kpop land.  When I first wrote of Jong Kook’s song back on January 27th, reader BeSerious called it.  Check out both songs for yourself.

This is really disappointing, “Can’t Forget” was one of my favorite songs off of Jong Kook’s album and the plagiarism accusations really affect the creditability of the song and the singer themselves, even when they weren’t the one that actually committed the crime.  I really don’t understand why all the Korean Entertainment companies haven’t stopped using this composer already, look at his record.  It’s kind of like they’re all hoping no one will notice the similarities.  In this day and age of technology with the internet and fans’ access to music sites and YouTube, music fans all over the world are just too astute to try and fool them.  These companies should seriously consider hiring some of these music savvy netizens to screen ‘new’ songs.  I know there’s money involved, but I just don’t understand why the Korean Entertainment companies don’t get permission to ’sample’ the songs.

Definitely one side of Kpop that I really dislike…A lot of their ‘’slow” songs are totally boring…So , if Kim Do Hoon has copied Usher ,I don’t really care because I’m not able to hear more than 1 minute without fall asleep…

    • wurl says:

lol i’m sure if someone stole something from you, you would care

      • Alfred says:

as long as it isn’t my socks :/

      • soulhead says:

Oh yes of course ,if i was a composer and if a stupid arrogant guy stoled one of my beautiful composition ,i will just go in Korea and fight him x) But I’m not even a composer and i’ve just said that because the both song are extremly boring for me,I’m not disapointed or a little angry by this plagiarism issue ^^

          @ soulhead.

“wurl” was saying that, “Wouldn’t you care if someone steals your gf/bf or your car or your laptop/desktop or your wallet, etc ?”

This is what the American composer is feeling, when he/she sees his/her song, very likely, being “plagiarized” or “stolen” by Kim Dohoon of Korea.
…….Kim Dohoon may have “stolen” American’s songs many times.

There is a saying, “love your friends as yourself”.
…..In this case, try to put yourself in the victim’s shoes; this is called empathy or to feel others’ pain as your own pain.

I enjoyed most of Usher’s songs very much.

    omigod!!!!!!! nooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  3. Supernova says:

I like it better this way. They should boycott him instead of saying cnblue plagirized blahblah

  4. Tenshii says:

what sucks is the songs are good.

  5. take1 says:

completely agree with everything said in the article

and i just want to add die-hard fans that refuse to hear the similarities in plagiarized songs reeally annoy me..

  6. ayu-rin says:

All these people who are now pointing fingers at this producer or whoever he is, should have in mind that all rap/ hip hop/ r’n'b songs are sampled and not original or creative or anything.

that being said: the beat of this song can easily be created with loops from apple garage band. here’s a tutorial

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj3lMXHrPlo

In terms of this song, I can’t say how appropriate giving credits is, because he just took a few premade loops from garageband; but the producers should definetly credit if they sample songs of other artists. especially if this song has been released only a few years ago.

    • H says:

That’s a pretty broad generalization about hip hop and RnB and its not true. There are plenty of original artists in those categories that make their own music that isn’t plagarized. I really don’t even know how you can make that assumption. You probably only listen to the mainstream crappy stuff that’s out there, but for someone who is actually in to those genres making a generalization like this just makes you sound ignorant to me.

      • kisu01 says:

        i agree with you H.

it seems hard to be truly original nowadays but that’s because too many ppl are thinking the same way. the phrase, “great minds think alike” is wrong. great minds think for themselves. producers/composers need to step out of the box and try something different. take risks, just, u know, not illegal ones.

      • ayu-rin says:

I’m sure there are even some talented hip hop and r’n'b artits out there, but concerning this matter, the “copied” songs were actually mainstream songs. So yes, I meant the mainstreams songs. The ones hitting my tv screen and the ones I’m forced to listen when I go to a club. I generelized things to state my point. “all, everything, everyone…” are relative statements, because there will always be exceptions.

        • tvxqfangirl says:

But you can’t make generalizations to make a point because it doesn’t make any sense. How can you say “all rap/ hip hop/ r’n’b songs are sampled and not original or creative or anything.” which real hip hop/rnb fans know isn’t true and then say well you were just trying to make a point. I thought that was your point? I’m confused.

And I think the biggest thing is not the fact that these kpop songs sampled/plagiarized these songs, it’s the fact that the composers did not give credit to the original composer and pay them like they are supposed to.

Even those uncreative, unoriginal hip hop/rnb songs you mentioned did not get in this kind of trouble because they took the time to give credit where credit is due. In kpop these type of composers love to get inspiration from the genre but once the song comes out, they forget to mention where their inspiration came from.

    • Fresh02 says:

WOW. Thanks for showing that video – people need to see that before calling “Can’t Forget” plagiarized.

I’m a KJK fan but people, just listen to both songs – I really don’t think the whole song sounds like Usher’s Love in this Club. Yes, that synthesized beat in the beginning sounds identical. Other than this beat, Can’t Forget is a totally different song. And yes, I had agreed this was unauthorized sampling or plagiarism by the composer.

BUT, in light of the fact that this is a PREMADE beat from Apple’s Garageband that anyone can use changes everything. This wasn’t copied from some original composition by Usher.

Maybe this composer has a shady track record but I don’t think KJK should be stained with this, when it wasn’t actually plagiarised.

  7. bowtoPYEHA says:

I am so sure if Usher found out, he would handle it . I wonder if he knows.

  8. Jen says:

At least people are saying that the composer was the one who plagiarized rather than the group itself. You would think that by now these labels would have some sort of quality control to prevent stuff like this from happening.

  9. asianromance says:

I can understand some not-so-original songs slipping under the radar of quality control (like maybe the original song was not that popular), but I don’t get it when the unoriginal song plagiarizes some parts of a very popular American song. How can you miss it?!

as for Kim Do Hoon having so many songs accused of plagiarism…he has probably lost his touch and should either take a break from his career or change it.

  10. h says:

wow, the beginning of the song is definetly so similar!
and wow, either that guy definetly is plagiarising or just has too many influences from other songs :P

i wonder if usher does knnow XD or the composer of usher’s song
andyways, they definetly shuld get netizens to screen these songs!

  11. Kimmieunni says:

    I guess I’m a little disappointed.
On Kim Jongkook’s album, this was probably the only track I went back to listen to more than twice…

  12. Jinho says:

God, with his track record, why do the companies KEEP hiring him for composing tracks and suchÉ
    .__.
They`re extremely ignorant of the fact or don`t care and just want to keep popping out hit songs, regardless of the fact that most likely, it is stolen.

  13. janers says:

aw this happens to be one of my favorite songs off the cd too, it’s so addictive but yes it does sound a heck of a lot like ushers. but don’t you notice that about alot of songs, there’s always certain beats or elements of songs that reoccur in alot of hiphop/r&b songs..and maybe it’s the music industry in general, but we only notice it in kpop songs because its more obvious..

  14. oi-me says:

I agree, some parts of the some sound alike, but overall the song by KJK is different than Ushers. And hey, the original might have be taken from Garage Band.

Though what I’m really wondering is why is there a random giraffe in the music video by KJK?

  15. tank says:

The only thing that is similar is the arrangement. And I’m not sure if plagiarizing an arrangement is illegal or not because its been done millions of time

    • tvxqfangirl says:

It’s illegal if they did not mention it in their cd jacket and pay the original composer. That is the biggest problem with sampling/plagiarizing a song. They don’t care as long as they get paid and get mentioned as the original. This wouldn’t even be an issue if that was the case.

  16. aigoo says:

korean producers need to get it together!!! everything is being accused of plagiarism these days. and korea has been getting called out a lot recently for using songs on their tv programs without the artist’s permission…. -__-

  17. bubbles says:

that’s a side of korean music for you…originality is a very foreign word to them
