After GD cried over “Lies”, what happened next?
Besides being a huge hit and becoming many people’s favorite Big Bang song? G-Dragon reveals more behind-the-scenes drama with YG in the series of interviews with Asiae.co.kr.
So we all learned that G-Dragon definitely had some bittersweet emotions about “Lies” even if it did launch Big Bang into greater popularity, because it was a track he wrote specifically for himself. Once YG’s president Yang Hyun Suk decided it would be a Big Bang song, that was that, no arguments, the end. Yes, there’s a lot of sympathy for GD who probably spent hours and hours every day writing and composing songs, but surprisingly, he also reveals that not all was bad in YG-land.
Can you imagine what it would feel like to not only be forced to rewrite your own song, but to also present it to your other members? And then waiting to hear their opinions? That’s what happened to GD as he worried about what they’d think on a piece he wrote according to his own personal style. If anyone remembers Big Bang back in their earlier days, “Lies” was pretty different from whatever they had done before. It seemed that after the first listen, most of Big Bang was either nervous or not too keen on what would be the song that altered their course in Kpop. Of course it would be Taeyang breaking the silence with a “Let’s do it!” to lift everyone’s spirits.
At the end of the day, GD can’t stay upset at the man who basically steers their career into success. GD shares that Yang Hyun Suk is indeed a good hyung, mentor, and “secret hill” to Big Bang. “Every song he’s said he has a ‘good feeling about’ has been a huge hit’. It’s really scary and constantly makes me wonder ‘What’s with this person??’ ” I’m no insider on Korea’s top entertainment companies, but how many presidents do you think allows their artists do the style of music they want to do, choose the clothes they want wear, and perform how they want to perform on stage? Apparently, the big man lets them do it all on the condition that they listen to his words. After all, “Lies” was a hit because GD did what he said.
I wonder if YG does let the boys wear whatever they want. How does that explain this? Hmmm, mystery.
Oh, the woes of being an idol. But it’s all about the game of give-and-take, isn’t it? Well, it would be if certain companies wouldn’t infringe upon the rights of their artists (cough, cough SM). Even though I will always remain highly skeptical of whatever goes on behind closed doors in Kpop, if this is indeed the relationship they have with their artists, then kudos to YG.

I have read this interview and G-Dragon’s responses. He sounds older than his age. Or someone who likes to reflect on his experiences a lot. He is very honest and sincere, again very different from the image he shows in public, and doesn’t give goofy answers at all. Sometimes it’s a bit too honest LOL.
But still, being able to say this much about his experiences, thoughts, and feelings pretty much confirms YG lets his artists have free reign on a lot of aspects of their careers and lives. I can’t imagine if it were some other company who only gives their artists scripted lines to say in interviews.
YG family love. Still can’t forget when G-Dragon went to Europe to “recuperate” from being exhausted and feeling down and YG said G-Dragon will come back when he’s ready and feeling better. YG really helps his artists and treats them as people, not properties.
