SNSD Girls Starving?

Oh gee. The gals of Girls’ Generation have revealed the secret to their slim figures to the world…and the world is aghast at how little the girls are allowed to eat!

It was revealed that  So Nyeo Shi Dae’s diet consists of a paltry 800 kcal a day (less than half the daily recommended!!!!) on MBC’s “VJ Special – Behind Story” which aired on December 17th. Their diets consist of mainly fruits and vegetables. Although there’s nothing wrong with fruits and vegetables, and vegans and vegetarians get plenty of nutrients from diets purely made up of fruits and veggies, I have a feeling that the Soshi girls would eat lots of meats and carbs if they were allowed… and so few calories a day on such an actively hectic schedule just screams unhealthy to me.

It was also revealed on the show that should the girls feel hungry they can eat cucumber as a snack. MMM yummm…now don’t get me wrong-I love cucumbers, but seriously? As a snack to curb hunger pains I doubt they help out all that much.

Sure the girls look great (with their flat abs and long, lean legs), but is starving them really necessary, SM? And not only does this effect SNSD, but what message are they sending to all their fans and women and girls everywhere? This is sad. Soshi fans-send the girls some food!!*

Here’s a funny fan-made video about this terribly sad situation:

*I make that comment in jest, because even if you send the food, I’m sure their managers will just take it away. Boo.

  1. haha says:

that’s what people think, but these girls get something injected to their systems to keep their weight low.

    • asian girl in US says:

really! like what? TPN (total parenteral nutrition)?…

      • > says:

yeah there’s this thing where they inject something to their system so they will stay thing. if they stop, they will go back to their regular weight. i know a girl who did that and lost tons of weight and when she stopped, she gained all her weight back. there was a photo floating around with SNSD girls with the same mark on their thighs where the injection was placed.

  2. T___T

i’m not surprised they haven’t been hospitalized more often

how does the shikshin do this??? my heart breaks…

  3. queenbqty says:

Aww, poor snsd! Someone should have a telethon to raise money so they can get what they need, food, singing and dancing lessons, more plastic surgery and long pants.

  4. VC says:

I’m pretty sure this is their diet when they’re promoting a new album! Look at all the kpop girls out there, there are no healthy lookin’ girls at all!

    • 2pm says:

no after school girls are healthy especially UEE
2NE1 girls to except dara she skinny and jewelry seo in young got lovely curves the wondergirls look healthy maybe because all the american food.

    • martiandoll says:

WG have never been skinny, except Yoobin in So Hot days. Sun Mi’s body had always been thin, and Ye Eun has always been curvy (not too thin, but not fat at all, either).

  5. ..... says:

I think thats what they eat during diet season like right before the cmeback or something special and they eat regular food on days they dont need to.

  6. Xenia says:

Just like me before vacation XD
My swimming suit is much smaller than winter clothes, LOL

  7. Jenny says:

You can have flat abs and skinny legs while eating a 2,000 calorie a day diet, especially with all the hard work they do. If they don’t start eating more and getting more sleep now they will have all kinds of issues later on cause there is no way they are getting enough protein, iron, and other with that diet.

  8. kkstar says:

I definitely agree with Jenny. I am a six month internship away from graduation and becoming a dietitian, and if you were to ask anyone in any of my classes and we will tell you this is not healthy. It doesn’t matter if this is temporary diet to prepare for promotions or not, your body cannot handle so little calories. Every time you diet, your metabolism slows down as your body accommodates itself to the new caloric intake. So perhaps being young and being so physically active is good for them, eating so few calories is wreaking havoc on their bodies, especially during such an important time of growth. Your body stops adding bone density until about 23-25, and if you are not getting enough calcium, vitamin D and protein before then, then you are pretty much set to get osteoporosis. No woman should go under 1200 calories, no teenage girls should ideally go under 1800. What a bad image this sets for all of the young girls who look up to them and want to look just like them.

    • soy-saucy says:

thanks for your insights, kkstar! i wonder if SNSD has a knowledgeable dietitian/nutrition on their side…

    • yaleni says:

If only they took heed. And i don’t mean the girls, but the people who are advising or making them eat so little, if that is really all that they are taking in.

    • kkstar says:

You know, I wouldn’t doubt if they had a “nutritionist.” While there are many great nutritionists out there, that title basically means nothing, at least here in the US. Anybody can call themselves a nutritionist, technically. So they may have someone advising them on their diets, but telling them all of the wrong things. They could be giving them vitamins and such, but vitamins mean nothing without the key macromolecules- carbohydrates for energy and brain function, protein for the muscles, and fat for key cell functions and certain vitamin absorption. And sorry, I am really trying to keep it from being too technical so I hope it’s not!

And I highly doubt they are preparing their own food. It is most likely someone else giving them so little, which is unfortunate.

And to the people who say Asian girls are naturally skinny… yes sure, Asian females tend to be on the lighter side compared to different countries. But I’ve always thought most of these girls were way to thin and probably had a body fat percentage way below what they should. It doesn’t matter who you are, that is just not healthy!

  9. yaleni says:

haha, pretty funny vid. what was it actually about, though??

  10. Amy says:

Wow. I could eat all three of those meals for breakfast, and still have room for a snack.

  11. Aera says:

I doubt they actually only eat 800 calories a day. With their rigorous training and schedule, they should all be in the hospital by now. Jesus.

  12. prinik says:

seriously 800 calories a day i mean i can’t wait till they get older and see them having to develop osteoporosis and other illness that they may develop in the future since asian people who are tall and skinny will have brittle bones. also if you are working 24/7 you need to eat more so that your body will be able to regenerate and i can see them signing in a rehab center for people who have anorexia or some type of eating disorder

  13. seoulsnsowhsdat says:

All stars go on strict diets especially female stars.
and male stars go on them to get those famous chocolate abs.

One in Five South Korean Woman is Undernourished !! u should read that : http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2009/12/117_56823.html

  15. ash says:

They’re a bunch of sticks. Not a body I’d want to achieve. A body like Hyori’s is more ideal.

    • 산나 says:

      Absolutely right!!!!!
I know asian girls are skinny by nature… But.. SKINNY,not skeleton!!!!
and who ever say they are curvaceous must be blind!!!!

  16. MelodySky says:

I don’t believe this at all. 800 cal? They’ll be stink thin. SNSD members are just normal weight for an Asian girl in Asia.

    • ree says:

Asian girls are stick thin but the fact that they get less sleep and more exercise/dance rehearsals than most Asian girls means that they should be eating better.

I have Asian friends that are that skinny but they can barely lift 10 pounds, don’t exercise, sleep a lot and barely eat.

  17. ree says:

No wonder they are all like sticks :/

Syeo Nyo Shi Dae indeed. More like Stick Nyo Shi Dae

  18. asianromance says:

with all the dancing and work that they do, they should be eating way more than the normal calories anyways! i agree with an above poster how such a diet can really mess with your metabolism. The metabolism will slow to accommodate the almost starvation. And then afterward, when they get older, should they gain a few pounds and want to lose them, it would be really hard.

  19. 123grr says:

I demand to see how many calories taemin takes a day.

  20. Odin says:

Maybe their body mass index is suited for a daily calorie requirement of 800 calories to maintain their weight. For a 75 kg., 5 foot 8 inch man like me, I need ~2000 calories per day to maintain my weight, and 1500 – 1750 per day if I wanted to lose weight.

  21. Momopuff says:

Ain’t this wonderful? This totally brings out the perfect message to every girl who knows about SNSD, you know? That a skinny body is achieved after losing the 12% amount of fat that keeps you healthy and warm. Haha. Warm. These girls must be warm with barely any fat and those short short short shorts this winter. How fun.

LOL. I bet Taeyeon and Yoona both had to go on a long fast after eating so much real food during Family Outing.

  22. Smma says:

    Mm, great.

Manufacturing a body shape that is only possible to attain *if you starve yourself*; a body shape that millions of young girls will aspire to thanks to the popularity of their idols.

Can you really only be attractive through starvation?

What kind of a world do we live in, really…

  23. Pully says:

The fact that Koreans think that all girls should be under 50 kg regardless of height is already ridiculous.

~Man, underpaid, starving, vigorous working, no relationship, no privacy, no vacation set. All for the fame. I feel sad for them sometimes.

  24. NyNy says:

I almost believed that some parts of that video were true.

  25. ?? says:

    so it’s forced anorexia…?

All their BMI are around 16-17, only Tiffany barely makes the healthy weight and everyone says she’s fat like wht the hell!

  28. Tristan says:

HAHA! watched the exact same episodes, except they were telling them happy things and thats why they were crying. uhmm.. way to manipulate our incapability to speak korean into these girls being looked upon as starving creatures.

BUT… i still love everybody:) EVEN tiffany. haha i still dont think she ever did anything wrong in the first place, ey?

    *fighting*

  29. Ellush says:

I dont eat so much either…. But thats because it is unnaturally in my nature to not have so much apetite. Only when it comes to chocolate. Then I can eat until I die…. But I weight 44,5kg and I am 1.62m. Do I weight way to little? I mean, I try to gain weight, try to eat as much as I can but somrhow it doesnt work! I’ve always been this skinny….:(
And I feel pretty healthy and active and happy. And I do eat everything: vegetables, fruit, meat, chicken, chocolate, ice cream and soup… Im not starving myself…so why cant I gain weight? Is it something wrong with my metabolism?
