Op-Ed: SNSD antis need to GTFO. Yes, that’s you.

snsd_20091227_seoulbeats

And I’m not even saying that as a butthurt S♥NE. I’m not even a S♥NE. I am, however, sick of people bashing SNSD. It’s just not cool anymore.

It seems like SNSD antis were attempting to kill two birds with one stone through manipulating the latest chapter in SM-related drama: Hankyung’s request to terminate his contract. Despite the relative irrelevance of Hankyung’s race to this latest piece of drama (unless you want to get into Korean nationalistic pride or Korea-China history or complicated things like that…and I don’t really want to… ) many have nonetheless placed specific attention on Hankyung’s Chinese nationality.

With this news still fresh in the minds of many, a Chinese news site posted an article that reported allegations of the SNSD members aiming racist remarks towards Hankyung, and that the resulting mental trauma from such bullying led him to ultimately take action against SM Entertainment. Another Chinese news source soon debunked the rumors, and SM followed up with a statement that denied SNSD’s involvement.

Just a sampling of the rumors:

Rumor: Hankyung displayed his Chinese folk-dancing talent on a variety show. Afterwards, Taeyeon noted, “Is Chinese folk dance that simple?” while Jessica added, “Even kids can dance something like that!”

When really… Hankyung had only done Chinese folk-dancing three times in Korea, two of which were before SNSD’s debut. Only one other female artist was present for the third performance, and needless to say, she was not an SNSD member.

Rumor: Upon meeting Hankyung for the first time, YoonA said, “Why are all you Chinese coming to Korea? You’re here because of looks, are you not? I don’t understand. I thought China had a huge market…”

When really… This conversation never happened. It’s just a rumor devised by antis.

Rumor: SNSD members had walked into Hankyung’s dressing room sometime in 2006, while Hankyung was a blondie. Reportedly, Taeyeon said to him, “Oppa, what did you do? Do you think that yellow hair would make you look more Korean?”

When really… SNSD debuted in 2007. There’s no way that any SNSD member could have gotten anywhere near a Super Junior dressing room before that time.

Well, it’s a relief to know that the SNSD girls weren’t behind any of this mess. But to be honest, how many of you thought that these rumors were legit at first? I’ll admit it–I have absolutely nothing against SNSD (Not a fan of their music, but I find them cute), but I’ve heard enough about their supposed diva-ness or plastic-ness or whatever to be the slightest, slightest bit convinced that maybe, just maybe these rumors could be true. Shame on me.

For being one of the most popular K-pop names out there, SNSD gets a heckuva lot of flack from K-poppers everywhere. And I suppose it’s somewhat understandable. For one thing, they’re girls. A lot of K-pop fans are girls. And what do you get? Cattiness. Drama. Girls are very critical of other girls. And when you’ve got the girl group that essentially every male idol group member is a fanboy of, you’re going to have jealousy. And oftentimes, it becomes very ugly jealousy.

dreamconcert2008_20091227_seoulbeats

Dream Concert 2008. I was never more embarrassed to be a Cassie in my entire life.

They’re skinny. They’re plasticky. They can’t sing. They can’t dance. They have no personality. Okay. We get it. But that’s not going to make them disappear, no matter how much hate is directed towards them, no matter how many “silent treatments” are plotted against them, no matter how many rumors are conjured up about them.

I’ll say it again: I’m not an SNSD fan. Personally, I think there are a crapload of other, more talented performers out there than any of these girls. Their hordes of screaming fanmen waving pink penlights kind of freak me out. And ‘Gee’ gets stuck in my head whenever I’m about to take a calculus test. But that doesn’t give me license to hate them just because they’re easy to hate.

Yunho’s super glue poisoning incident. Jaebeom’s suicide petition. Dream Concert 2008. All of these events make us shake our heads in bewilderment and embarrassment today, but where do you think these actions stemmed from? Antis are ordinary people who perhaps one day had a minor dissenting thought about Artist X, and found others who supported and propagated that one thought. That one thought grew. And out of that, hatred grew.

Does anyone remember that time a few years back when a bunch of Wonderfuls and VIPs decided to purchase 1700 tickets for a DBSK concert, and then returned them all moments before ticket sales closed? This caused a loss of about 10 million won, or $7000 USD. A minor loss for a concert grossing millions with every performance, but like the cliche goes, it’s the thought that really mattered. It was such a ridiculous project. But it made sense to those people who bought and returned those 1700 tickets. It’s ridiculous to hate on a group of nine innocent girls who are just making a career off of the skills they trained so hard to get. But it makes sense for us to hate on them? For what reason… because everyone else does? What impeccable logic we all have.

Forgive the preachiness. I know this goes against the usual snarky, sometimes-borderline-bashy Seoulbeats style, but if a group’s moral integrity is questioned due to a bunch of ridiculous rumors, and if these rumors were so easily believable, then there’s something that clearly needs to be addressed.

All in all, popular hate is still hate. Don’t propagate it. SNSD, fighting.

“Oppa, what did you do? Do you think that yellow hair would make you look more Korean?”

LAUGHS FOREVER. Whoever devised this rumor must have not realized that no fully Korean baby would ever be born with that hair color. Heck, most babies of the world aren’t born with hair like that… bleach-blonde is a rather unnatural shade. That’s what most of these fake insults are: stupid. They are completely illogical and go for shock factor.

  2. Bananaaaa says:

    omg THANK YOU!

    honestly…
if you’re gonna bash SNSD for being plastics… might as well do the same for half the other kpop population

good luck with trying to getting them out of the picture… lol

        • GEEzer aka SIT says:

@ Sammie … aka Semi -nary.

For “…All Nine Die” to happen, STAND will need to join the Al Qaeda terrorists.

  5. loveshatori says:

it goes for all the antis
    seriously get over yourselves
honestly cant people be decent human beings
    even on the internet
the world would be better off if everyone realize that these idols work their asses off
    much more than most people
whether you like them or not they dont deserve to bashed
    and bullied
people call korean netizens horrible so many people are a bunch of bitchy hypocrites that dont realize they are almosts just as bad
i dont like snsd either but their is no reason for me to constantly bitch and bad mouth them

  6. toyatoy says:

wow funny..anyway I still don’t like them expect for the one who can dance pretty good (first girl from the left in the picture..don’t know her name) I think she’s underrated.

    • hiiii says:

her names hyoyeon and yeah i think the same thing
i know the girl can dance her but off and has a good voice but shes always over shadowed by the other members but i luv the other members too

    • maika28 says:

i think so too. i’m not a fan, but i do think that hyo yeon (i hope i get this right) is underrated. she’s a good dancer and i find her pretty. she’s the only member that i like.

  7. Melonie says:

I wonder if a war would erupt in america with fans . Like when Britney shaved her head or the Black Eyed Peas vs. hmmmm let’s say Jay- Z or something. I know it’s far fetched but what’s the big deal. They are a singing group fans will never know if they are nice or mean or serpent people that hypnotize us into loving the entertainment. That’s it folks they are entertainers no more no less , they bleed like humans, hurt like humans, and when they disband will go live life like a normal person. Dudez let’s get along here

  8. solit says:

they lipsync a whole lot. fans said it’s because “there aren’t enough mics” and most recently, for the lipsync-ed performances in their concerts (most notably jessica’s – which still sounded horrible pre-recorded), “the show is two-three hours long, do you expect them to continuously sing and dance for that period?”
last time i checked, WG (because there hasn’t been any other female KPOP idol group doing concerts with dance songs) sang live throughout.when they do sing live, they would more times than not sound shaky and weak. and to this, their fans would say, “oh they’re sick, packed schedule”, “mic problems”.sones make me laugh.

    • Andrea says:

      wondergirls’ choreography is a joke..
i love the wondergirls but no offense…
“i want nobody nobody but you -clap clap point-”
thats the extent of their dancing.. obviously they can sing live with that kind of choreo

ill admit that snsd do lipsync a lot, but in my opinion thats just cuz their choreo requires LOTS of jumping around

      • hiiii says:

that dance is popular cuz its easy

      • aa says:

the only song you know from them is nobody, isn’t it? lol.

just check out WG’s concert fancams before saying that. every song (excluding ballads) have dance routines. irony is one tough, fierce choreography. and not to mention, they have to sing+dance when they have only 5 members, everyone has their equal parts, unlike some people in snsd who only have to sing, like seconds.

        SNSD’s choreography isn’t hard either. it’s easy.

      • soshijjang says:

        100% agree with andrea…………soshi hwaitingggggggg

    • WG says:

in as much as i love WG, their live singing abilities aren’t that amazing. so please dont bring their name in here. :)

  9. hiiii says:

their are antis for every idol in kpop because thats just how kpopn is. Its sad but its a fact of life. i just wish people would hands and get over with JEEEEZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. i am a sone but im not a fan of every idol group but i dont bash’em. people like antis are the reason why theres hate, war, killing etc. i dont care if this doesnt concern you but seriously stop acting like a bunch of little 5 yr olds!!!!thnx for the post^^
    SOSHI HWAITING!!!~~~`

  10. jkoom says:

So according to you, those 1700 tickets were less than 5 bucks a pop? Recheck the math on that. And what do you expect man? Korean fans are all crazy fuckers thats been established from the beginning of the kpop industry. Theres a difference between a fan and a fanatic, and most of those crazy bitches sitting in the audience at music bank or whatever wearing masks and glasses are definitely fanatics. Who else would be stupid/crazy enough to waste thousands of dollars on useless idol merchandise. Just enjoy the fucking songs, enjoy the fucking performances, don’t put them up on a pedestal and don’t buy into too much shit and everyone would be fine.

  11. imaretard says:

    YAY!

  12. Kpoperrrr says:

I aree, but is important to ealize that they have said some of the things that have enraged Koreans and International fans a like. They are not completly innocent. I feel like because of their slip-ups and other culturally sensitive mistakes, people who did not like them had even more of a reason to dislike them and then based the rumors off of things that they assumed they *might* do.

Like I said, they aren’t entirely innocent. I’ve seen them pubically humilate (whether that wa their purpose or not) elders(forgot the dude but he was taling about his travels, and life in England/America/Some english speaking ocuntry, sang a song in english and i believe it was Tiffany who cut him off, told him it sang it wrong–very rudely–, then proceeded to sing it) friends (calling people “idiot”, “retard”), and other artists (making fun of BB or TaeYangs name). Tehse girls arent as sweet nd innocent as many think, at the same time they arent as bad as many people think either.

    • Toni says:

This is the point the article fails to mention. The writer omitted this point completely from the article while having a picture of the dream concert front and center. I ask you, why was the crowd acting that way in the first place?

I was new to Kpop (around the time of the dream concert) and really did not dislike or like this group. I was indifferent. I kept reading articles about the incident to find out what it was all about . . . But after seeing some of their actions as mentioned above by “Kpoperrrr” I cannot stand this group. I skip over articles regarding them, don’t listen to their music and I get upset at the mere mention of ANY one of their name. I call myself an anti. and will continue to be one.

When incidents of race is in question the statement that Korea is a homogeneous country is always tossed around . . . if that is the case then being insensitive to other cultures/races goes hand in hand with being a homogeneous country. Right???

    • Dave says:

None of you guys obviously speak Korean. I have listened to and read to all of these “disrespectful” recordings and written print the antis have provided.
      1. The translations are way off, and only give a broad idea of what the conversation is about.
      2. Go take a few classes.
      3. It’s funny how you mention international fans, when most of the people in this discussion are of the United States.
      4. Go look at anti forums, 98% of the genders of the members are envious females who can’t obtain the male idol(s) they want. The task isn’t the least bit feasible.
      5. You are pathetic, walk the fence more you hypocrite. A strong argument is one with a clear side assisted with support.
      6. You most likely have no talent, as any talented person would be able to surpass ignorance and understand other people and their conditions.
      7. Antis and fence-walkers (aka more idiotic than antis) live off of fictitious/un-solid evidence. You attempt to ruin the enjoyment of others by being ignorant trolls. It’s no wonder why people can accurately say that you are generally in the lower end category of the social ladder.
      8. Go vent your frustration into your pillow. Just because your lives are not up to par as your dreams, doesn’t mean you have to go online and insult others.
      9. Nobody listens to your opinion in the outside world, since it has no value. You might want to consider the same thing when commenting online, nobody cares about your crappy opinions. If you have something worthwhile to say that has meaning then do so, if not then don’t, you fool.
      10. People don’t know you exist, don’t get highly thoughts that a mere organization of jealous people would get you anywhere in life.
      11. You speak of disrespect and moral values, yet you have none of what you speak. Correct yourself before you criticize others.
      12. You actually do none of what you do on the internet in the outside world. I sometimes wonder what low level intellect like you talk about.
      13. These points can go on, and you have a nice life, because nobody else has a more fulfilling, respectable, and enriching life as you.

  13. don't get it. says:

I don’t understand antis, not a single bit, especially where SNSD and STAND is concerned.

It’s 2010 already for goodness sake, SNSD have been around since what, 2007? For how long more are they going to hate SNSD?

Sometimes I don’t understand antis, you’ve never met the SNSD girls in person, you don’t know how they really are like, where does all that hate stem up from? It’s plain childish to hate someone you don’t know in such a manner.

Plastic? Isn’t more than half the korean population plastic? Hell, even I’m one. I had braces on for a year and a half, and people say even putting braces on is a form of plastic surgery. I’ll like to say at least half of the world’s population is plastic.

Talent-less? Hyoyeon and Jessica have been trainees since Eunhyuk and Leeteuk have been. That’s a freaking 7 years they trained. Don’t tell me all those years go down to nothing, because trust me, time can change a talentless person to someone full of talent as long as you are willing to learn.

And of course, the most famous reason for all the hate: loose lips. But come on, which one of you here can tell me you’ve never made a blunder in your life, never once said things you regret later on in life, never once said a really childish statement that only shows your stupidity? They may be ignorant, and that ignorance may or may not bee forgiven, but come on, which one of you here knows them well enough to know that they aren’t a tad bit regretful of what they said? They aren’t supposed to be perfect you know, they are humans too, they make mistakes too.

Seriously, antis need to get a life. There’s so much other things that they can do other than to hate. Why make your life so miserable by hating someone or a group of people every single day of your life? Whether or not you believe in karma, what goes around comes around. The hate you show to them, one day it’ll come back to you.

  14. Ben Dover says:

Celebrities don’t debut to be hated, and I don’t understand why its a big deal if people of other nationalities try to debut in Korea. A lot of Korean celebrities try to debut in Japan and China and ultimately the States. I was actually scouted for YG Entertainment, but my nationality was a huge factor that discouraged me from going through with it. Also, the [anti] fan culture in Korea scares me.

  15. Poodles says:

Bye SeoulBeats, you just lost a reader.
Can’t believe you posted such a stupid rant. Yes you are butthurt. Idc if you’re a Sone or not.

  16. Finally, an un-biased piece. Un-like the previous one who supposedly took no sides. Pfft, yeah, and the world is flat.

    Kudos for writing this article.

    SNSD Fighting!

  17. Proud2beSONE says:

snsd haters are all female. that means they’re obivously jaelous. since dbsk and suju kept on talking about them. girls you will NEVER EVER be wit dbsk or suju. just face it. snsd is loved by ever single korean man. even idols.

  18. FatalxInnocence says:

I really don’t understand ANTI’s at all. They’re all ridiculously selfish. I don’t care if you hate SNSD, feel free too. You have every right too. But verbally attacking them, or trying to destroy their career is just immature and selfish. YOU don’t like them, other people do. By destroying their career you’re not only hurting them but the many fans who like the band/artist. It’s selfish! grow up! It wouldn’t surprise me if every ANTI fan was 12, cause seriously it’s so high school.

S.T.A.N.D is the most immature thing I have ever seen in my life. Usually when I dislike something I just don’t pay attention to it, meanwhile these people dedicate their lives to destroying SNSD. I just find it sad that this is what the human race has become. I really do pity S.T.A.N.D… I really, really do =\
