Odd (Wo)Man Out

t-ara2

With so many idol groups these days forgoeing the old five member formula and increasing their group numbers to six, nine and even thirteen, it seems inevitable that in a group of that magnitude, certain performers will stand out and some will be shunted to the side. Before I even first properly ventured into the world of k-pop, I had heard mention of Super Junior, and I just couldn’t believe it; thirteen boy band members just seemed like gross overkill. How do you even keep track of who’s who? …Very well, if the multitude of ELFs are anything to vouch for. But of course any devoted fan can roll off the names of not only every member, but their birthday, favorite color and what they wear to bed at night (boxers or briefs).  No one expects the casual listener to know all the particulars. However, as a group obtains more and more fame, Diana Ross (or Beyonce for youngins’) syndrome almost inevitably sets in. Though with an idol group of epic proportions it is more than easy to overlook the ones left in the shadows.

What initiated this navel-gazing mini-essay you may ask? Talk amongst T-ara fans has recently turned to oft-overshadowed member Boram.

boram

Discussion was ignited upon the appearance of this article:

Singer Jeon Youngrok makes a statement about daughter T-ara group member Boram’s activities.

On the broadcast of KBS2TV’s Yeoyoomanman Jeong Youngrok confessed to ‘being opposed to [his] daughter’s singing career immensely’.

Jeon Boram is currently an active member of the popular 6-member girl group T-ara. Before debuting into the group, Boram participated in magazine modelling and appearing in various CFs. Last year, a single album for the ‘Lucifer Project’ was even released.

Jeon Youngrok said that ‘Even though I opposed to it, she still pursued her singing and debuted as a singer. However, since their activities get piled up, it becomes a lot harder. She would come to me and tell me that ‘I never knew that this was so difficult’.’.

Jeon Youngrok also added that ‘I would just tell her that I experienced that same thing, and it is true that you get frustrated a lot, but along the way, you still learn a lot,’ to cheer her up. ‘We tell her that we cannot do more than what she does right now, our shadow isn’t as dark as she thinks it is’, he jokes.

After the appearance of this piece, many fans voiced how they felt sorry for her as she has been having difficult times ever since she joined T-ara, and her parents are making the situation worse, as they are very critical of her.  There are concerns that her apparent cloud of unhappiness is bringing down the entire group. Also, while the young lady does seem tough on herself (but what idol isn’t?) Boram’s parents play a significant role in her acclimation. Her parents have been a part of the industry, and are fairly strict as well; reportedly her father said in an interview that she wasn’t allowed to do “sexy dances” which extended to the other girls as well. Though with the song “Bo Peep Bo Peep” Boram finally gets some face time, and utilizes it pretty well. Perhaps the chance to prove her mettle is all that she needs to open up to the experience. T-ara are rookies, and with their group size, the girls may just need time to adjust to their rightful roles within the group.

That led me to consider the other idol groups, both rookie and established, and who is often presented (other than th leader) in the forefront of group activities – and not just in interviews, as some people are just shy, but performances and albums- are their talents adequately showcased?

hyoyeon_snsd

So Nyeo Shi Dae and Super Junior are both special cases; it’s interesting that with the mere size of these groups you almost expect that certain members are given more attention than others (remember the stick figure diagram?), which is true- but there is an almost rotation-like process in how SM promotes the groups and promotes the different members. It is as if with each image change, you notice a different member that may not have struck your fancy before, and suddenly Jessica is getting all the Soshi love when it used to be Yoona (though she continues to get plenty). Some of that can be contributed to the members themselves; taking the initiative to indulge in your own projects away from the group is a proactive way of increasing name recognition with masses. Still, there are members of idol groups that while widely known, may not receive all the respect they deserve.

Sunmi(Wonder Girls): Debateable; some lump her in with Sohee in terms of singing ability, but on the right song, she has a low smoky voice that you wouldn’t expect from such a tiny girl.

Hyoyeon (SNSD): Remember when I mentioned the rotation? Other than the occasional brief dance break, this girl starts each round blending in the back of the pack.

JiHyun (4Minute): This girl is the leader. The leader of the group. Yet HyunA and Jiyoon have both surpassed her in terms of recognizability and are releasing solo albums soon. What?

MBLAQ: That guy with the mustache

Kang Jiyoung (Kara): I knew there was a fifth member! Thanks Wikipedia!

Everyone in SS501 except Hyunjoong: This is more due to the fact that Hyunjoong was given a prime acting opportunity and ran with it, but the group in general gets less recognition than others.

Luna f(x): *Jan Brady rant* Why is it always about Amber, Amber, Amber? The real vocalist of the group, and as the songs mature, will hopefully obtain a chance to show off her skills.

This is just scraping the surface, but I would like to point out a few notable exceptions:

bigbang

Dong Bang Shin Ki/TVXQ: Only because their nation of fans would not bear to favor one guy over the other (at least not publicly)

Big Bang: These guys came out of the gate as just so likeable, and they all have such distinct strengths and styles it seems – you’re a VIP for one you’re a VIP for all.

2ne1photo

2NE1: This group has many of the strengths of their sibling group in that each girl is so distinct in her appearance and musical style; it is ingrained in your memory. Plus, there are only four of them.

I am surprised that there are not more companies going off of YG’s approach with his groups; the member individuality appears to be a huge factor as to why the groups are so popular, and as the Spice Girls have proven, a brilliant marketing strategy. Nonetheless, change doesn’t happen overnight, and to be honest, since the reign of the Supremes, there is something magical, almost ethereal about a group of talented women singing in dancing perfectly in sync from their hair down to the tips of their toes. It’s an old Motown bias I know, but you know what they say: sometimes the oldies are the goodies.

Are there any k-pop idols you think are overshadowed in their groups?

Does SS501 still count in this? Now that they’ve been voted most popular foreign group in Taiwan, as well as one of the most popular in Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, I’m just not sure. They’ve also been on tons of shows in Korea lately, won the K-Chart twice and gotten a Mutizen. All of that is certainly not solely down to HyunJoong. KyuJong was just in a very popular Internet drama (SETI), both he and maknae HyungJoon were on God of Cookery, and HyungJoon hosts a nightly radio show and is about to be in an omnibus drama.

I think most people are beginning to figure out who the other members are, especially KyuJong and HyungJoon.

    • trippi says:

      i agree!
i admit, i only knew hyun joong when i first learned of SS501 (BOF aired here in my country) but i quickly got to know all the members as well.

whenever the group appears on variety shows (even during performances), you can easily get to know all the members because of their lively and distinct personalities. all their shows are just so much fun to watch!

leader just got a head start on the solo projects with WGM and BOF but watch out for the rest of the members! they all have solo projects being cooked up. and i personally cant wait! :D

i guess most of the new fans just know hyun joong when they think of SS501 but the hundreds of thousands of TRIPLE S know and LOVE ALL members :D

      • 1234567890 says:

but we have to remember as the author said: No one expects the casual listener to know all the particulars.

and really, until now majority of the casual singers only know hyun joong. sad fact, but true

        • Alvina says:

I suppose; SS501 kind of has the SMAP syndrome.

If anyone is familiar with SMAP, they’ll know that Kimura Takuya, with his multitude of film roles and talents, heavily promoted the group into the lime light… in turn, prompting new fans into learning the rest of the group members. The casual viewer, however, only knows of Kimura’s fame.

However, I’ll say that this HAS been working for DSP (even in the past with the old idol groups). With Hyun Joong headlining SS501 and Nicole (now Gyuri) highlighting Kara

          • reimin says:

but hey if we are talking about Japan, then things are really different. SMAP is widely popular, they are the nation’s boyband. so even if for the casual viewer Takuya is the most popular, deifinitely the other members gets recognized and are popular. and they are in JE, that means individual projects and individuality allows for more individual recognition and fame, which the other members of SMAP gets.

          • NNNC says:

People outside Japan may know mostly about Kimura Takuya, but fans and non–fans in Japan gives equal credit to both Kimura Takuya and Nakai Masahiro (leader of SMAP) for SMAP’s success. Nakai is the one behind the brilliant idea of showcasing SMAP in funny, hilarious TV shows that endears all of them to general public.

The fact that ALL JE groups and many K-POP groups also followed this same route after SMAP’s footsteps just show how successful Nakai’s idea is.

          • newbie says:

agree, I don’t listen to Jpop so I only know

            SMAP, Kimura Takuya
            Arashi, Matsumoto Jun

  2. nov0607 says:

Well, ss501 members actually are quite easy to distinguish once you watch a couple shows the guys are on, they have quite distinct personalities, however I agree that the group as a whole is hardly recognized.

Um, Junho of 2pm? He seems to be the second “full package” in the group, meaning that he can sing, he can dance, and he dorks out with others at times as well. Seoulbeat has always said that he’s overshadowed, so I am surprised that he isn’t on this list.

    • Ashe says:

Junho’s a good one. I was thinking off the top of my head, but I’m also not as 2PM obsessed as ellie :)

      • funkyidiot says:

2pm has very distinct personalities despite the number. Junho seems to be getting enough love.. seeing he participated in dream team, if not for Jay’s controversy, he would have been a regular member.

        I am surprised 2pm isn’t mentioned.

        • nov0607 says:

I have watched very little of dreamteam, but Junho’s insanely fit!! — not what I was expecting at all, even though 2pm’s a acrobatic dance group.

they probably were left out because 2pm has been receiving plenty of love all around these days :)

  3. no love n m for you says:

    Sunmi(Wonder Girls): DEBATABLE ; thats right :)
cause i think she is not overshadowed by sohee ,yoobin sunye or yeeun :)
and i luv her smoky voice :) her umbrella perfomance was hot

    JiHyun (4Minute)poor girl
i did not even know that she is the leader
but she is really pretty and has nice voice

MBLAQ: That guy with the mustache :):) you mean G.O??
he has a really nice voice

    i am amazed by 2pm
7 members and there is no one overshadowed

i think it is understandable that no one
in 2NE1 is overshadowed by the others
    ( like 2am just 4 members )

and about BIg Bang at first Daesung was overshadowed by G-dragon…
later he gained popularity through his apperance in FO

    what about after school??
    and uee

    • no love n m for you says:

uee and bekha who overshadow the others

      • jyyjc says:

I don’t think behka overshadows anyone, it’s only uee.

      • kay says:

yeah…not so much bekha as it is for uee. you can tell by watching their performances. the person who gets the most solo shots are uee. bekha has no solo shots…well untill it’s her part of the song to sing/rap.

      • zeekwelder says:

Uee never overshadows any of the members in performances, she always has blank dear caught in a headlight look when performing. Kahi is by far the best performer in After school

Its the extra stuff that bring more attention UEE.

      • victastic92 says:

Uhm..even IF Bekha overshadows others in AS, she’s good reason. So hot and smokey. What’s Uee? I mean sure she looks like a squirrel and some people find that cute. But a 27 year old squirrel is like a mutated bird. Not attractive.

    • yoyoyoyoyo says:

in 2pm chansung, junho, and junsu are pretty underated, but then again baby is the least talented
and i think 4 minutes leader cant sing worth snot live

      • victastic92 says:

OMG chansung as cute as he is…omg, his monotone rap makes me want to jump on him!!!! junho is getting more attentions. A LOT in heart beat actually. And Junsu is always coined the voice of the group…so I don’t see how they’re underrated…its like they are given the chance but they just dont grab the attention. Well they all good to me.I like 2PM as a whole. I’ll scream my head off at the sight of any one of them.

  4. Huooo says:

i’m agree for everything except big bang and 2NE1

i would put Seungri and MinZi in the group above

    • serenii says:

It actually seems like seungri is the second most popular big bang member in korea, after gdragon who is first.
      Ironic, eh? =T

    • 1234567890 says:

i don’t think so, based on observations, most people even like minzi more than bom

    • .... says:

you are talking international but in Korea they are more popular then you think.

    • chris says:

I just found out that Big Bang was a five member group. Who is this Seungri and why is he there?

DaeSung in my opinion is the only one who can sing. But Bae makes some good songs and his voice is listenable (is that a word?). GD can be annoying at times, but he makes good music and generally I like him. In the beginning I couldn’t look at TOP. His face has many sharp angles so it was a bit jarring. But the more I listened to his sexy rapping voice/skills the softer/sweeter his face became. He’s my favorite despite the fact that, or because of the fact that, I find him very odd. He’s only second in hotness to Taeyang.

P.S. I was intorduced to Big Bang from the song TOP and GD did with Bom. I’ve been waiting a long time to find out who she was. Now that 2NE1’s debuted I know.

      –sory for the rant

    • victastic92 says:

ugh…no, Seungri is really up there in popularity, and COME ON, are you serious? WHo doesn’t like minji?

  5. anon says:

i got into Kpop just this year but in 2PM i only know Jay, Taec and Nickhun. other names like chansung and junsu come to mind but i cant associate the names to the faces.

    • nov0607 says:

Yeah it is kinda interesting that Junsu’s only very good singer in the group yet he’s always left out because he goofs less than others :) Every time there is a talent show he sings, which is nice but just less attractive than… I don’t know…. “seducing jessica” :)

  6. heap says:

    thunder’s group. LOL.
i know he was the last one added to mblaq but he’s the only one who seems to be making any news.
among both beast and mblaq, he’s the only one i know!

  7. kkstar says:

Ok, I will reserve my full opinion of SNSD here because I know a lot of people like them, but…. I first noticed Hyoyeon from one of their special dance breaks/performances or whatever and she immediately became my favorite. She honestly just does not seem to fit with the rest of the group’s “concept” and perhaps that is why she does not stand out. I’m pretty sure, given a chance, she would gladly join a group more like 2NE1. (Please note this is not that I am saying 2NE1 is better than SNSD, I don’t want any crazy fans attacking me on here. I am simply saying that maybe she fits their style more. She does not seem like the cutesy type.)

    • madq says:

I KNOW RIGHT she doesn’t fit the cutesy idea at all… maybe more the genie thing they’ve got going on but I see her fitting more in f(x) than snsd…seeing as f(x) is the dance group hahah

    • dodoshimo says:

I totally agree with you on that one! As much as I love Hyoyeon and the rest of SNSD, I feel like she shouldn’t have been in SNSD to start off with. Her dances are raw especially her popping and she will do so much better with 2ne1. Hyoyeon posses the more manly and badgirl image that is more suitable around 2ne1 then the cutesy SNSD. I do love SNSD, and I can’t imagine if one were to leave the group, but I do wish she get more attention for the real talent that she posses.

    • mina says:

Hyoyeon doesn’t act fake cutesy enough to be in SNSD. She and Sooyoung are the only ones I can stand without vomiting in my mouth.

      • caca says:

        tu pues

      • lala says:

        Sooyoung is an obnoxious cow!

Yuri, Seohyun, Hyoyeon and Taeyeon are the only tolerable ones. The rest are omfg, this is why I hate girls.

        • hellobyebye says:

Taeyeon?! Are you kidding? She’s a total diva and an attention hog. Sooyoung is the most down-to-earth, imo. Seohyun’s not built to be an idol; she’s too quiet, she’s not pretty, and she sings average. I don’t even know what charm she has.

But Hyo def. needs some more attention. Girl is gorgeous and talented.

          • Mela says:

Taengoo is love. She’s adorkable as hell and Seohyun is the prettiest member. lol

          • hellobyebye says:

Seohyun is the prettiest? roflmao to each his/her own, I guess. “Taengoo” is adorkable and talented but also is a diva and an attention hog. She’s also not a very good leader, lol.

        • victastic92 says:

Tae is not like sunny kind, I agree she’s obnoxious but at least she’s not fake. She’s not like Oh i have to be nice and girly for everyone, she’d beat people up in FRONT of your face. Hyoyeon I would say is the BEST female dancer on the kpop scene and I see too little of her to know about her though she looks like SHG to me…a tad uglier version. SeoHyun is the one with the eyebags and fake ass hell come on dont care for boys? really? cus all I care about is boys right now and we the same age. Yuri is ok cus she prettay xD and she’s smooth when she dances not as powerful as hyo tho

    • f.ck says:

      i know right ?!
she doesnt fit the cutesy concept at all
maybe put her in 2NE1 ( then put Dara in SNSD)
or maybe put her in f(x)

      • hellobyebye says:

oh ew no. Can you imagine Hyo doing Chu? I’d cry for her.

      • Mela says:

Yeah. I love Dara in 2NE1 but if you put her in SNSD, she would not be called untalented.

        • PasserBy says:

agree…. That’s the magic of large groups… The great singers cover up the good and not-so-good singers…

          ——-

          not-so-Totally-unrelated topic:
Sorry, Sorry – Answer should be a SuJu KRY song, not SuJu.. O_O

    • kkstar says:

Wow I really thought perhaps I was the only one who felt this way since no one ever mentions her, but I definitely agree with all of you! She needs a group with a completely different style so her talents can shine. And I thought about f(x) but they still have some of the cutesy going on, despite great, mostly non-cutesy choreography. I really feel if given the chance, she would definitely fit the YG personality so much better. But alas, she must suffer in the background of however many other girls. I was on a dance team with 65 girls… yea girls aren’t that much fun, especially when you have to see each other every day at 7am.

  8. 2pm says:

i feel sorry for Hyoyeon she hardly get any singing part
they only give a solo dance i don’t see her attend variety show as much the other members.

  9. jyyjc says:

I’d like to add snsd’s Seohyun to that list. Granted, she does get more parts to sing than hyoyeon because she’s one of the better vocalists but she’s so shy, like super shy. She barely speaks in interviews and doesn’t really add anything to variety shows. And how can you forget all of after school except Uee?

    • Quest says:

You kidding me? thats like the #1 girl for all them old lolicon samchoons n fans. just cuz she’s shy doesnt mean she isnt popular/recognized.

  10. Marj says:

I agree with your 2NE1 and Big Bang points – they’re so talented individually and I love each member in both groups. They’ve maintained a status in the group and also as a group… props for the YG family.

If it wasn’t for Hyun Joong’s popularity in Boys Before Flowers, SS501 would be in the ‘exception’ part. I loved these guys before he starred as Ji Hoo and I feel really sorry for the rest of the members when people keep saying Hyun Joong’s the best primarily because of the BBF craze. His popularity just shot up and he instantly became the most recognised in the group.

It gets frustrating when I see an ‘I love Ji Hoo oppa’ comment on an SS501 interview or youtube vid. It’s like: they’re a band! There are 5 of them! Actually get to know them all… you’ll find they’re great guys with talent. Either do that and recognise them as a group (okay, if Hyun Joong’s still your favourite after that, fair enough) or leave your comments for a BBF related page! Grrr.

It’s great that they’ve been back together for a bit with Love Like This, and that people have had a chance to recognise them as a group.. but many still see them as Hyun Joong and those four other guys..

(sorry about the rant.. not hating on BBF or anything – I was a part of the craze too, but I love SS501and sometimes it seems unfair)

    • funkyidiot says:

Nope. It’s not just the BOF craze. He is best of them. I have seen their variety shows from before. While they don’t associate his current stardom with him then, He is the funniest, most athletic and good at variety shows. He is always number one but the gap widened too much after BOF.

      • Renn says:

If we are talking about variety shows then yes, I give you that, he seems to outshine the boys sometimes but talent wise? I am sorry to say but the other guys surpass him in terms of singing.

I have to agree with Marj, I just wished that the other boys would have given a chance to equally shine too, BBF completely ruined the other members, I just wished that the boys will be given equal recognition, they deserve it as much as KHL does.

        • ilessthan3pho says:

Agree with Renn. KHJ has a great personality, which makes him fun and outgoing. But whether he’s a great singer? No, the others are far better than him. And his acting is cringe-worthy, although the camera loves him.

          • Alvina says:

well, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

I’ve been a fan of the boys since their debut and trust me, if it wasn’t for leader’s involvement in variety shows and the drama, ss501 wouldn’t be getting the love the they’re getting now.

Actually, I have a HUGE pet peeve against fans like you guys who claim to love the group and yet proceed to diss one of the group members. Acknowledging what each one brings to the group as a whole is best.

          • ilessthan3pho says:

@Alvina, I’ve never claimed I love the group but I do like them. And what I said is not dissing, it’s simply stating the truth, because it is true. His singing isn’t the best and his acting is indeed cringe-worthy. We’re talking about underrated artists here and my opinion is just that KHJ is overshadowing the others.

    • onsam says:

Same here. I loved SS501 way before Boys Over Flowers (I was a big fan of Jung Min) and enjoyed watching Hyun Joong on We Got Married. His bluntness and 4D ness was really fun to watch. But in terms of vocals and acting? He’s pretty much on the weak side. He’s just lucky that…BOF did so well. I do love him but the other members have strengths that they can show off. I’m glad Kyu Jong finally got that drama and it seems to have good popularity.

To Alvina, we’re definitely not hating on any of the members. A true fan would be able to criticize the members equally. It is out of love. I criticize my favorite members a lot (I often say how Onew is pretty much weak as one of the leading vocalists), but it’s because I see their potential.
I don’t think every idol member should be treated as if they’re perfect.

As long as you’re not a anti who hates on these idols for no reason, criticism is no problem. If you have a problem with that, well continue to idolize them as if they’re god.

HYOYEON iSSS TOO FiERCE FOR SNSD!!
have you guys seen her dance?? she’s too good for them. she’s pretty much a hip hop-ish type of dancer but all she gets to do is the cute stuff and even when doing that she doesnt get time to show it off. snsd is okay but i love hyoyeon cuz she’s a sick dancer & she’s actually one of the funnier girls in snsd.

that’s one of the reasons why i love BB, 2NE1, & DBSK soo much. each of the members get equal face time. they dont pick one or two people to be the main members. they all have something they great at whether it be dancing, singing, rapping, or being funny and they get to show it off equally.

    • Wonderland says:

ohh & luna’s voice is great. she’s also in the wrong type of group for her i think.

    • Jenny says:

I don’t particularly like SNSD so I don’t know much about the individual members. However, Hyoyeon always stood out to me cause she is a fierce dancer as you said and I think that she is absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, you can never even catch a glimpse of her in performances b/c the cameramen always love Yoona and Jessica.

    • lala says:

I never saw the big deal about Hyoyeon.

she is memorable… the other girls look and act the same like robots doing cutesy worthlessness… she is the odd one out… and i like her for that! plus she’s a hell of a dancer

    • smile says:

of course each members get equal face time in BB, 2NE1 & DBSK…they all have 5 members or less.

With a group that consists of nine girls like SNSD, there will always be a few that are left out.

I feel more bad for a group that has less than the average five and are still left out, like jihyun from 4minute and KARA’s maknae.

Though, I do agree that Hyoyeon should get her minutes of fame the girl doesn’t care that much.
Also, I think SNSD knows this as well which is why in almost every hit song they perform on stage they always have a dance break for Hyoyeon.
like ITNW, Girls Generation–though it was a bit strange and short…, Gee–this was a bit short as well, and Genie.

  13. lala says:

What are you talking about DBSK??

    hello? Changmin who?

    • maldita says:

True! Though I looooooooove Changmin, I’ve noticed that he’s kinda left out sometimes. I mean, each member of DBSK is massively popular, but Changmin doesn’t get much love on TV.

Ever seen them in variety shows? His parts get edited out the most. He even talked about that himself. There are some DBSK TV appearances where all you see of Changmin is him laughing his ass off.

    • ^^ says:

changmin!!! i must agree. his parts get edited out all the time on tv shows. but the guy is awesome. he may not have as much face time with the camera or as much fans as the rest of the members, but he still pretty much pwns other idol groups ^^ i think thats why for the mirotic concerts he gets two solos, they’re trying to promote him more

    • chris says:

hahaha. Aww this is true. Personality wise Changmin is in my top 3 favs of TVXQ. He is one of very few singers I envy: for his vocal gymnastic abilities (he can reach higher notes than I and his midlevel voice is sexy as heck). However, once the music is off and the harmonies have ended he becomes the unnoticable grandpa sitting in the corner shaking his head at the unruly children.

But when he snaps that quick wit…BLAM! – it’s golden. 8oD

  14. Kathryn says:

i agree that Hyuna and JiYoon have passed JiHyun (the leader) in recognization and its sad. She needs to step out more..be bolder or something.

In 2pm’s case, i think Junsu is the least recognized member. Junho too but more Junsu. Junsu has a great voice but seems shy and awkward (thats why i LOVE him!)

Same thing with MBLAQ. GO, who has a great voice, but isn’t very popular compared to Mir and Joon. Personally for me, i like GO and Seungho (the leader…has juicy lips XD), because they aren’t as popular as the other members.

Luna is so awesome!!! Can’t stand Amber or Krystal.

Why is it that the great vocalist of idol groups goes ignored by the main public? its frustrating

Hyoyeon needs to push her self to the front! She is the only member that can dance and has some spunk.

I had alot to comment on cause it makes me a lil angry when my favorite idol members are ignored by the general public.

    • lily29 says:

That’s not always true though, in shinee onew and jong get a lot of attention and they’re the main vocals. Beast is new but yoseob seems to have become the mascot and he’s definately the main vocal talent of the group. YG is good with this too, Bom and Taeyang/Daesung get a lot of deserved attention.

I can’t stand it though when the most popular member IS the one with the least amount of talent. I mean I love sohee but come on.

  15. lily29 says:

Seungri actually seems to have a lot of haters, he’s still popular though.

I couldn’t agree more about Luna. Also does anyone else think that she gets left out by the group members themselves? Like Victoria and Amber are close, Krystal and Amber, and then Krystal and Sulli? They don’t seem to joke around with her as much. Luna deserves a lot more attention then she’s getting.

Considering their size I think sm does a good job with snsd and suju, shinee does well too.

I’d say the worst is DSP.

  16. ilessthan3pho says:

Sunmi(Wonder Girls): Debateable, yes; her voice is still raw, but I think with time she will be a great singer. She has improved a lot already and indeed with the right song, her voice is very good. But comparing her with Sohee is =/

Hyoyeon (SNSD): Even till this day I can’t seem to really ‘know’ her as every member of SNSD gets shoved into my face with the ‘rotation’ indeed. But I’d like to hear more from her, since I think she’s quite an enjoyable woman on variety shows and her dances are epic.

JiHyun (4Minute): I didn’t even know her name is JiHyun. She is my favorite member when it comes to vocals and until now I just called her ‘leader of 4Minute’. She should be given more credit.

MBLAQ: Thunder is in this group right? I only know him and the guy with the mustache.

Kang Jiyoung (Kara): -lol- I couldn’t come up with her when someone asked me to name all the members…

Everyone in SS501 except Hyunjoong: SS501 along with Kara have been getting popular just this year, although being around for quite some time now? I think it’s just poor promotion and Hyunjoong just became popular because of BOF and his looks. He’s prettier than a girl, but that’s about it.

Luna f(x): I don’t really follow f(x) although I really like their songs. I know Luna, Kristal and Amber, but Amber is the only one I can point out. But overall, I feel that the Amber commotion should die down. Sure, she’s handsome. And then what?

  17. bubbles says:

Sunmi has a great voice. She is the next big thing out of JYPE

  18. Ryan says:

Big Bang? Fair… puhlease… If only DaeSung get solo Rnb/Ballad song that it only fair. What he do know, appeared in FO and singing trot. YG just wasted his talent.

    • lol says:

Daesung chose trot over ballad, its his favorite genre and he appears on TV more then the other members with his show.

    • Quest says:

Try listening to “Try smiling” Dae’s ballad single.. pretty damn good Yb sings the back melody/harmonization or whatever that is though i think

    • Quest says:

And his Solo album(ballad) was supposed to come out around nowish(yg said end of year wich prolly ment mid next year smh) though the Accident happened and through things for a loop. And trust 1 month lost in the music world can be pretty costly since studio booking times and time to work with the producers and stuff need to be redone lets just wait that out a bit

    • mingus says:

      Looking at fan cafe’s
      its 1. GD 2. Seungri 3. TOP 4. Daesung 5. Tae Yang
TOP and Daesung might be switched but i’m positive that GD and seungri are first and second and Tae Yang is last.
I’m kinda confused as to why Tae yang has less fans than the other ppl of the group since hes had lik 2 solos already.

  19. f.ck says:

i wish LUNA should have just debuted as a Solo singer
i mean she’s got the attitude when shes dancing
    her voice is AWESOME
    and she has charisma.
and i dont get the hype with Amber, i mean sure she looks like a guy. but talent wise ? meh~~
Its sad to know that people like people just by their looks

  20. -Notorious says:

Hyoyeon (SNSD): Not a fan of SNSD…but i do admit that she barely has any singing parts. And even if she does, she’s singing it with 2 or 3 others girls.

JiHyun (4Minute): Ahhh god, this girl is seriously overshadowed. I sometimes still forget she’s the leader bcuz well…she doesn’t stick out what-so-ever.

MBLAQ: That guy with the mustache < – - – What?!
I thought Seung Ho was the leader..?

Kang Jiyoung (Kara): I knew there was a fifth member! Thanks Wikipedia! < – - LMAO~! Mmm, well…not so into Kara…but i believe that Nicole would be the most popular?..er am i wrong.

  21. zeekwelder says:

I agree YG groups have more individiualism, i mean you can immediately spot each one on stage and they all their own styles.

SM is based more on synchronicity in that its all about what will blend well into one cohesive unit. When they started i hard a hard time telling Yuri, Yoona and SeoHyun apart on stage, that god they started dyeing their hair and changing the hair styls

  22. Izzy says:

I stand by my opinion that Hyoyeon is wasting her time in snsd and should have debuted in a group where she can REALLY do her stuff.

Aaaand…. Call me biased, but alltogether, CSJH the Grace is overshadowed far too much.

    • Quest says:

Actually i’d have to take the opposite opinion than you. Sure she’s underrated as SNSD but if they would of put her in another group it may not of worked for her(or maybe it would have) lets be honest she has it the worst out of all SNSD. Her dancing may be the best sure but she gets the most camera shy(said herself) and freezes up. then her singing isnt as strong as the rest. In a big group like SNSD that can be covered but if she gets stuck in one like 2ne1 wich already has its own not really upto par vocalist of Dara(no offense blackjacks but.. you know) it wouldnt really work out, unless she can bust out a rap like noones heard but till then SNSD is the group for her underrated or not she has her lil fan following and should be proud of it.

but yea she’s underrated i’ll agree for that?

      • hellobyebye says:

I disagree. I think in a larger group she would’ve gotten more recognition for her skills and definitely would have been one of the more popular and recognized ones.

F(x)’s Victoria. Main dancer, very popular. If she had been in SNSD, I bet you so much money that she wouldn’t be getting half as much recognition she’s getting now.

You see, in SNSD, there are three main dancers: Yoona, Yuri, and Hyoyeon. So even if Hyo dances amazingly, there’s always fans that claim that Yuri dances just as amazingly, if not better, and thus the spotlight shines elsewhere. In a smaller group like F(x), the roles are defined. There is one main vocalist, and there is one main dancer. There is a rapper, and 2 supportive vocalists. (omg do not come up to me and say that Krystal is a main vocalist. Her voice sounds like a choking cat.)

And since there are distinct roles, each one gets more recognition and credit for those roles that they play.

    • o.o says:

YES OMG. the GRACE. they are totally ignored by sme. they may not have the looks like snsd but man they can SIIING. too bad they’ve been kicked to japan for nearly a century now and almost nonexistent. i miss them :[

and hyoyeon is my fav in snsd!! ^^ i’m a sucker for dancers.
i have to agree she doesnt get much attention but she’s not exactly a strong singer either and i wouldnt really know where to put her because she doesnt seem to fit in any of them.

    • chris says:

I completely agree about CSJH. They are my favorite female everything to come out of SMent. Actually they’re my favorite female singers period from K-pop. I first heard an acapella from them in a mixed tape sort of youtube video, loved them but didn’t know who they were or how to find them. It’s been through the Japanese music that I’ve gotten to know them the most. Though I do think that half the outfits they wear and some of their lusty dancing distracts/takes away from their vocals and physical beauty. I feel like the hyped sexy gimic isn’t needed if you’re talented…and good looking already.

I don’t follow SNSD too much but even without seeing her dancing, Hyoyeon has always stood out to me. She has a calm, approachable, steady vibe to her. And sometimes I’m like she’s a handsome young lady (not a negative thing). Other times I see her and she looks very sulltry and pretty. When I first saw SNSD I honestly thought the Wonder Girls had expanded, until I realized that the girl I mistook for Sohee, is it, was better looking than Sohee and I couldn’t find Yoobin. I have to say I love some of Wonder Girls’ songs, but only care for two members: Yoobin and the one who can sing well.

  23. Dolly says:

hmm.. it’s funny but the only person i recognize in MBLAQ is the guy with the moustache coz he’s the guy.. with the moustache..

  24. daniyah says:

when shinee first debuted i used to think “why is that tall guy always in the back?”
so i always waited for the dance break and there were only taemin and key in the middle or in the front!! “WHERE IS THAT TALL DUDE?”
okay..maybe he is that rapper.. so when that rapping part comes.. guess what? Minho gets half and key gets half. that may seem fair but come on!! we all know that key is good at rapping singing and dancing!! but why can’t he give up rapping to minho? if it weren’t for minho’s charmes and now the Dream team show.. i would have never known his name!!!
there are 5 members in shinee:
vocals.. Onew and Jonghyun and Key
    dancers.. Taemin and Key
    rappers.. Minho and Key
    what’s the repeated name here?
jsut like how jaebum (who is a kickass rapper) gaveup rapping to taecyeon and chansung.. Key should give up rapping!!

and in after school the girl with the short mushroom hair.. and gernraly everybody except UEE..

    • uhh NO says:

key is prob THE most underrated member in shinee
i see minho’s face plastered EVERYWHERE, in CFs, runways, variety shows etc. key never gets any solo singing performances, solo dances or solo raps.

he’s like the jack-of-all-trades who’s forced to share spotlight with evryone else just because he’s awesome at all of it. evryone knows shinee’s specific roles r :

      taemin – the dancer
onew + jong – the vocalists
      minho – the rapper
key? n in RDD perfs, minho’s almost always in the front, next to taem. n the rap parts in songs are assigned, its nt like it’s Key OR Minho’s choice. Minho’s doin the least in the group n yet he’s the 2nd most popular member after taemin. which is good for him, he seems like a nice guy, but complaining about him nt gettin enuff coverage is jz ridiculous when he’s EVERYWHERE.

tho i do agree boram is like invisible, n AS shud just change their name to UEE & After School

      • chris says:

Minho’s the really pretty one right? If so there’s your answer to his face being plastered everywhere. idk

That’s strange what you’re saying about this Key kid. With dbsk SM used to highlight their talents however numerous or few. Maybe Key needs to do a solo project

  25. am says:

Great article. Couldn’t agree with you more. It took me ages to get the names of all SNSD members and I just gave up on SUJU.

Companies should realize that it’s not about quantity. Really, it should always be quality. Sometimes, the more talented people get cast aside because of other members who have more points in the looks department.

How about an article on underrated solo artists who get overshadowed by groups?

    • Quest says:

as painful as this may seem its not just about quality, cuz if it was Big Mama/V.O.S./and other top contender balladers who put on damn good performances every time with less recognition now would be heading the industry while the tops of now would lets just say not be at the top (with few a exceptions

  26. heap says:

2AM is pretty much just JOKWON.
sorry to the other members but i just do not know them!

  27. crayola says:

Sunmi is overshadowed?. What a joke.. I think she and Sohee are in fact the the most overrated. The real talent in the group are obviously – Yoobin, Sunye and Yeeun.

    • ilessthan3pho says:

Agree that Sohee is overrated, but Sunmi isn’t. I think you haven’t heard any other songs than their most popular ones because that girl can sing. Very well I might say. Her voice is still raw, but in a few years I think she’d be up par with Sunye and Yeeun.

  28. crayola says:

Luna deserves more love… Hyoyeon doesn’t get enough love because of the fact that she isn’t considered as pretty as the other members.. which I don’t get because she seems pretty enough and her dancing is sick!.

2NE1?.. mehh.. to me they’re overrated but good marketin on YG’s part

  29. heartofgold says:

SS501 members, other than Hyun Joong, are really not recognizable at first listen/look since HJ’s popularity skyrocketed.

2pm’s Junho and Junsu receive less love than Jay, Khun Wooyoung, Taec and Chansung.

2am in general receive less love than the other Oneday half except maybe Jokwon.

Definitely Jihyun from 4minute! I feel sorry for her coz she’s supposed to be the leader.

Beast’s Junhyung (the rapper) and the maknae too. I feel like they’ve got more to show but doesn’t get the chance. Kikwang, Yoseob, Hyun seung and Doojoon over shadow them.

MBLAQ’s GO -stache guy, if you’re a casual listener, would probably actually get more of your attention because he’s got an amazing voice. I think at the beginning it’s actually Seungho (leader) who got overshadowed by his members. This is changing now though since MBLAQ’s popularity already increasing.

On SUJU and SNSD, the main reason why I can’t get into SUJU or SNSD is because of the sheer number of the people there. It’s not that I don’t like them. I’m sure they’re good based on their huge following but I can’t get into their fandom. I’m not good with names and unless their music rocks my socks off, I’d never spend the time listening to /watching them in variety just to know each member. This is why I got into YG’s Big Bang and 2NE1 (aside from their music being my thing), its because they’re very recognizable individually. Each member had distinct voices and characteristic so its not boring to watch them on stage. I personally don’t like too much synchronized sing and dance with the group members having fixed smiles/expressions and sporting same clothes because it’s like I’m watching robots. I get bored. With BB and 2NE1, I enjoy each member doing their own thing onstage.

    • dReAmS says:

I agreed that Junho & Junsu is underrated.
But I think because of their personality.
Junho & Junsu is less dorky and doesn’t really give themsleves out like the rest. They mostly tend to be in the back more while the other cam whore (lol)

I’m glad Jay is getting more attention (minus the Jay’s scandal) because he doesn’t get overshadow by the others. Like you can said that he is 2PM’s Leader. He can dance, rap and sing. All the qualities that makes him such a Leader.

As a Leader he/she should shine too cause if he doesn’t than you’ll be saying who is the Leader???

Many group’s leader gets overshadow by the other members like:

**LeeTeuk of SuJu..I didn’t know he was the Leader until they keep saying he is the Leader. At first I thought it was ShiWon or HanKyung because I usually see them in the front and LeeTeuk doesn’t get to sing much…he usually would fade in the back…but now he seems to be more noticeable as SuJu’s Leader.

**Taeyeon…I know she was the Leader but she seems to be overshadow. Yoona always get to be the one in the front & it makes you think that she’s the Leader. Taeeyeon seems to fade in the back too. The only reasons she is still noticeable because of her beautiful vocal.

**Onew. At first I thought Jonghyun was the leader.

**Jihyun is 4 Minute’s Leader??? I thought it was HyunAh??? That’s what I thought but than I was O.O Oooh okay?

**DooJoon of BEAST….I thought that AJ was the Leader because he gets his solo dance/abs in Bad Girl. While DooJoon fades in the back..doesn’t get much singing part.

**Seung Ho of MBLAQ…same thing as DooJoon…he fades in the back…and Lee Joon is like doing what AJ is doing…it makes them seem like they are the Leader instead.

**Jong Hun of F.T. Island…I didn’t know he was the Leader until Hongki said Jong Hun was in Idol Army…I was “I thought Hongki was the Leader?”
      ….there is more but I forgot….

all I can said is that I’m glad that these Leaders didn’t get overshadow too much by the other members (kind of good but kind of bad)

**Jay of 2PM (~good~) even though he always says “Yes, I’m the Leader” but he lets the rest shine too. Jay doesn’t take/steal spotlight from his band member

**Hyung Joong of SS501 (~bad~) others get underrated..like what someone mention here that when ever people saw them they would be HyunJoong/Jihoo and the other four guys

**CL of 2NE1 (~good~) I think she got talent or Leader qualities because she can dance, sing and rap..when I saw “Fire” I can see that she must be the Leader

….there is more but I forgot again LOL….

      • maldita says:

Leaders don’t necessarily HAVE to be in the middle all the time when performing with their group. Their real function is really to be the spokesperson for the group. They’re the ones usually leading the interviews and speeches.

I think the only leader who is mostly front and center during performances is Yunho of DBSK. The only sensible reason to that is because he’s the main dancer, like Eunhyuk of SJ and Taemin of SHINee.

      • blah says:

lol i think you needa take a leadership class
a good leader isn’t someone that always gets the spotlight and can sing/rap/dance and do everything well…
a good leader leads the team….

  30. mei says:

“MBLAQ: That guy with the mustache…”

he is G.O oppa! definitely he is the most talented guy in mblaq but sad to say lee joon is the most popular one in the group..

i would also like to point out other groups who weren’t mentioned on the post:

    GAINING MORE ATTENTION THAN OTHERS:

UEE overshadowed other members in After School…

JoKwon (2AM) – i can’t blame him for being popular in the group coz he’s a sold out guest in every variety show for the reason that he has a great sense of humor and one true diva! lol..

Lee Hongki (FT ISLAND) – he is the vocalist of the band but other members deserve equal attention also..

    UNDERRATED ONE:

Ki Seop (U-Kiss) – he is the new added member in the group but sad to say he only got one line in the song Man Man Hani and he’s not gaining any attention as of this moment..

Junsu (2pm) – i must say he is the most underrated member of the group yet he is the one who sings well..

Poppin’ Dragon (B2ST/BEAST) – that’s his stage name but his real name is Yong Jun Hyeong and in my opinion i think he is the “not so known member” in the group…though his rapping is pretty tight and he got a singing voice too!

as of this moment that’s all i can think of…others was already mentioned in your article…

@DBSK, BIGBANG, and 2ne1…. i totally agreed on you!

every members are unique individuals combined together as ONE!!!
each one of them may not have equal amount of fans but for sure all the members in the group are being recognized and known for their abilities! ;)

  31. elleymax says:

i don’t think sunmi is overshadowed, people love her dorkiness and cuteness, i think it’s more yeeun, though yoobin is the least popular in WG (at least in korea)
I still think in WG every member is exposed quite equally, they get their solo lines, it’s not like in snsd where taeyeon and jessica sing half of the song.
i do agree with hyoyeon being the overshadowed one but with a group consisting of 9 girls, it’s very hard to give all girls the same amount of sreentime. I do understand why sm wants to exposed the most popular ones (means taeyeon, yoona, jessica and tiffany) more than the others, though i think it’s a pity for the others

  32. dReAmS says:

    most Overrated:

    -Khun of 2PM
    -Sohee of Wonder Girls
    -Amber & Krystal of f(x)
    -Hyung Joong of SS501
    -Yoona of SNSD
    -UEE of After School

    Underrated:
    -Junho & Junsu of 2PM
    -Sooyoung & Hyoyeon of SNSD
    -Yesung of Super Junior
    -the rest of After School

    ……more but I forgot….

    • chris says:

Yesung is my SuJu hero and KyuHyun…and Henry is my SuJu-M hero (for the killer dancing violin). Back to Yesung – A voice that man has, a VOICE I say! Plus he’s kind of weird and reminds me of Elijah Wood so that makes him even better.

SoHee is overrated in any category. Well maybe she has a nice personality (idk?), which in the real world should matter most, but in entertainment talent SHOULD come first.

  33. newbie says:

Since Boram is my favourite member I don’t think she was overshadowed. but I have no idea who is the middle one is! I always thought eunjung and hyomin look similar.. thank goodness eunjung cut her hair or I’ll remain clueless. T-ara members are so difficult to remember because the rappers are too exposed

  34. lollyobsessed says:

    Agree with your list.

I love 2PM and I think they definitely are getting the attention they deserve, even the ‘underrated’ ones like the Junbros. They get a lot of love internationally anyway, as opposed to less well-known groups with members who are pretty much nameless to the general public.

HongKi overshadows F.T Island, but that’s mostly because of the emphasis on entertaining in kpop, which the other members aren’t good at.

T-Ara. I don’t even know how many members there are, and it doesn’t help that they wear matching outfits. The only name I can remember and fit a face to is JiYeon.

HyunA of 4Minute pretty much queens the rest, even though glasses girl is gaining. Don’t follow this group so I won’t comment on talent, but I don’t really see her appeal.

Jung YongHwa. I know C.N Blue isn’t even active in Korea yet, but the main if not the only reason they’ll be debuting so soon is because of him. He’s got such a head start that even if the others win fans over, it’ll take time, and seeing as they’re also a band, it won’t be easy.

  35. 123grr says:

The most epic “odd (wo) man out” this year for me would have to be 4minute’s JiHyun and f(x)’s Luna. With Jihyun, I don’t even know if the girl can sing — she has no stage presence either. It’s frustrating. With Luna, the girl has loads of talent but is overshadowed by members like Amber and Krystal.

I agree with HyoYeon. A few days ago I was commenting about how it sucks for her to be included in snsd. I know she contributes something but if we are only to rewind the times, I would have wanted her to debut with an edgier group. It saddens me when she gets overshadowed for the shallowest reasons of having a standard – this so-called “beauty” the other members supposed to have. I mean really. And to think that she’s not even ugly to begin with.

I agree with YG groups — this is one of the reasons why I like 2ne1 and BB — they go well as a group but you still know them individually. I like the fact that YG focuses on his artists’ individuality, because it’s something the artists could bring even if their idol groups have expired in the future. They’re not the most synchronized groups out there but it’s ok. The chemistry and personal quirks they have when put together makes up for it.

I have long accepted that with every group, there will always be the most underrated and the most overrated. That’s just kpop life, I guess.

  36. gsssss says:

Hm I agree with this list!
But in SNSD, I think SUNNY is the most UNDERRATED member…and hyoyeon ofcourse..I mean, Sunny can surely sing..if you look at some of her “solo” vids on youtube! I love her voice! But unfortunately, she’s overshadowed by the talentless YoonA (no offence, why the frig is she SO damn popular?).
And to be absolutely honest, I noticed Hyoyeon the FIRST when I got introduced to SNSD! Cuz she has uniue features..the rest of group looked the same..Hyo’s face was ust so unique, she caught my eye!

oh heavens no. If you’re talking only about yoona then yes she overshadows the rest with her popularity. But sunny is definitely not underrated, she is known for her cringeworthy aegyo and her voice is pretty decent that she gets included in snsd’s singing group(taeyeon, jessica tiff, seohyun). Sunny hosted a radio program and has variety show appeal, not to mention she did a duet with jaejoong for their sm town tours.

I have to agree with most people on HyoYeon. On all of the smaller perfs where there’s only like 3-4 of them, she outshines them all but yet with all 9 of them you barely notice her.

f(x)… Amber is cool. I get the hype about her because it’s “new” but get over it. I can’t stand Krystal though. Just because she’s the sister of Jessica doesn’t mean her face needs to be everywhere and she sings every damn line in their songs. All I know is Victoria and Luna need more air time.

DBSK – Now I love DBSK, but if you think about it ChangMin seems to get overshadowed A LOT.

Wonder Girls – I LOVE absolutely LOVE Wonder Girls, And I understand about SoHee but what about YooBin? She is everywhere too! What is it about her? Is it ’cause she’s from America? What’s so special about that? But yeah w/e.

4minute’s Jihyun is DEFINITELY overshadowed. I still feel bad for her during the Golden Disk awards when she was making her speech and then Hyuna just jumped out to make her own thank you speech when the other members were pulling her back. She pretty much disrespected her leader whether she meant to or not.
And the maknae gets overshadowed a lot too (Even though the youngest is always the overshadowed one). People don’t realize how good Jihyun and Sohyun are at dancing because its Hyuna who gets the attention.
KARA… I’m feel very guilty about this XDD but whenever I see news on KARA, I’m so surprised to find that there are 5 members instead of 4.
Back when I was a Super Junior fan, I realized that YeSung was definitely overshadowed. It seemed like the members who acted doofy were the ones who were more popular and now when I see clips on youtube of him acting silly, I feel like he’s just doing it to get noticed.

      OMG!

I totally agree with ya about the 4minute leader during the GDA.

I was horrified to say the least …and yeah i absolutely feel bad for her too.

      Dang!
i have never been turned off with an idol this much before
but sadly i think what Hyuna haters have said before about her are all beginning to make sense with me…LOL =D

And yes the key word here is R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

I understand the happiness and her crying but can’t she wait for her turn???

i thought we all should have learned that by now from nursery school. LMAO ~_^

I am not even sure if they deserve that Newcomer Award (though i wonder too if that even occurred to Hyuna) dammit! >_<

speaking of odd man out. What the hell ever happened to Kim Kibum? seems like that boy never existed. im not a fan of SJ but really i heard about the whole only 13 ELF movement and how severe some fans can be, but why hasnt anyone complained that this boy became the mascot of SJ and ran with it? he’s a decent actor but where are all his dramas/movies and why hasnt he been performing/promo with the group.

I think 2ne1 are overrated…they’re popular yes, but they’re rookies and you can’t judge their talent based on a few hit songs ):

Hyoyeon probably likes not being in the spotlight actually…she doesn’t fit with the SNSD image and it’d be very awkward for her to try to look cute when she’s just plain sexy and dances wild.

Yoona is the most overrated member!!! Taeyeon, Jessica and Tiffany can sing,Yuri and Hyoyeon can dance, Sunny has her aegyo, and the rest can more or less sing and dance. But Yoona isn’t good at singing or dancing; she’s better at acting and hogging the spotlight.

    • Quest says:

I know what you mean when you said that bout 2ne1 but in all honesty they’ve come with more hit songs in the 6 months they’ve been debuted (9/10 if we add lollipop) than alot of these groups do in 2-3 years. Sure it was great marketing strategies but was that combined with the fact that people did like em and they showed some decent skills helped. so they’ve got a decent basis on what they can be judged on though next album will make or break them for real.

With SNSD sure Yoona Jessica tiffany are tops for word of mouth type popularity but the actual registered fandom goes to Taeyeon. The rest of the members are sprouting their heads too in popularity Sunny/yuri sooyoung have their shows Seohyun is just luved and did that trot colab for some granny fans n stuff (though she could do something too…) hyo started breaking out with Hello baby but she got a ways to go… time for mnet sbs or kbs to start a Idol dance studio or some crap let the midget(jk) dancers (odd how those are usually the better ones with some exceptions) of each group teach

you got give them credit 2NE1 got the most hit this year
even there solo is a hit. all their song top the internet charts.

    • cindy says:

      uhmmm… yep 2NE1 is indeed a Rookie…(and so?)

but definitely NOT a rookie with a “few hit songs”…

they have (At the very Least) 6 hit songs under their belt since they debut which is like ONLY 6 to 7 months ago!!!…

how can anyone call that a FEW ???

(whoah i just realized that 2NE1 has never reach 1 yr yet in the industry…LoL)

and maybe yeah they are hyped up before

But all idols have some kind of hype before debut too …

      the fact is

we have to at least acknowledged that the girls lived up to the hype (whether we like it or not).

      and truly they are Popular.

(both for their talent & Charisma)

      Also,

the girls have sang or performed many other songs besides their own songs…

so what more do we need for us to judge their talent for??

do we need the girls to sing/performed at least 50-100 songs before we can judge their talent?!?!? JK =P

      Still,

the girls have sang ALL of their songs from their album already on radios and TV…

and I think it’s More Than Enough for anyone to determine their capabilities and most importantly their POTENTIAL.

most idols can be in the industry more than a year
and yet.. have only sang or performed 2 or 3 songs from their album…
      Worst…often Only ONE song per album!…LMAO ~_^

but yeah if you really need more time and even more performances to judge 2NE1’s talent… i guess we can only wait for their next album okies. ^_^

      Peace! ~_^

I dont understand how winning and being recongnize by getting a certain amount of awards, even if you are a rookie is a bad thing? someone explain please, you dont mind.

  42. cindy says:

i absolutely agree with the TVXQ, Bigbang, and 2NE1!

cos I know all of the members
and I have been able to distinguished them (the members) in a short span of time. ^_^

Also, about Hyoyeon, Boram, and Luna.
I feel so sad for these three and wish them the best of luck in the future.

    Peace & God bless to y’all! ~_^

  43. hmm says:

I’m not a fan of SNSD but SM did pretty good job for getting almost all of the members shine with that sheer number of people. Although it took them a lot of time and hard work.
Seeing them constantly in variety shows, radio, music shows etc. made me remember most of their names and faces even I’m not into them.

2ne1 only have four members and all have a very distinct role to play into the group so it really easy to know each member.Even without guesting in any variety shows they became equally popular.

I think 4minute gets the cake for having an unbalance popularity of the members. The three pretty much faded in the background.
