Touched by an A.N.JELL
The little drama that could, SBS’s You’re Beautiful, has aired it’s final episode in Korea. It had been said that the drama was doomed to fail since it had been lined up to air against the drama that was assured ratings domination IRIS. Although IRIS did dominate with ratings hovering around 30%, it hasn’t done as well as expected. With big names like Lee Byung Hun, Kim Tae Hee, and Big Bang’s TOP, along with the biggest production budget of a Korean drama ever at 200 billion won (around 20 million USD), IRIS was expected to do better. You’re Beautiful stayed strong with ratings in Korea of 10%, but what set You’re Beautiful apart was its faithful, avid fans and its immense popularity online with international fans. Experts say that You’re Beautiful survived for three main reasons: One, a good storyline by the popular Hong sisters which portrays a fantasy drama that had strong characters with personality and great dialogue. Many said that the characters were tailor made for the actors that portrayed them. Two, The story showed life behind the scenes of an idol band and with the current K-pop craze of idols it showed fans a different aspect of idol life. Three- A solid fan base.
When lead actor Jang Geun Suk, wrote a message on the drama’s homepage wondering if the low ratings were because of his portrayal of A.N.JELL leader Hwang Tae Kyung, fans were ardent in their support of the drama and its cast and crew. Korean and Chinese fans sent buffet meals for the whole cast and crew, gifts of vitamins, letters, and other fan sponsored projects were done to support their favorite drama. When the drama was shooting in Japan for its last episode, it had a last minute call for extras and the resulting 300+ fans surprised the cast and crew because there were no You’re Beautiful promotions in Japan. When asked how they knew about the show, fans responded that they followed the drama online.
It’s surprising that in Korea You’re Beautiful didn’t perform better because online its the #1 drama on most K-drama sites and forums. On one site You’re Beautiful had over 3 million views when you take that and divide it by the number of videos (123) it comes out to about 24,500 views per video. If you compare this with IRIS‘ number of views per video on the same site, 8,041 and Queen Seonduk at 5,381, You’re Beautiful dominated by a landslide. The popularity of You’re Beautiful with international/online fans have caused Kdrama sites to have major server issues with the amount of fans trying to watch episodes as soon as they’re released. Dramabeans’ site crashed when rabid fans were logging on trying to read her episode 10 recaps, the infamous ‘reveal’ episode. Fans were also VERY vocal in requesting merchandise from the drama. There were no plans of merchandising the pig-rabbit or the A.N.JELL pogs and stickers but when they were shown in the drama fans were immediately demanding the items from the drama’s production company. The first OST from the drama sold over 30,000 copies which is a lot for a drama OST, and the second OST is sure to sell just as much.
What is in store for our favorite faux idol group members after You’re Beautiful?
Shining A.N.JELL – Lee Hong Ki who played Jeremy was said to be the ’sun’ on the set, he was the mood maker and was much loved by the rest of the cast and crew. He was always smiling even when exhausted because of their demanding filming schedule. Fans loved the cute and sweet Jeremy who was always there to lighten the mood whenever things got too tense. Fans were moved to tears when Jeremy got his heart broken after he found out that Go Mi Nam liked Hwang Tae Kyung. I do have to admit that I got teary eyed too because Hong Ki was very convincing, but what made me cry more was when he told Mi Nam that as soon as his magic bus returns to its stop he’ll be okay but “When I get off this bus, I’m going to return to being the happy Jeremy. Forget everything I said here. If you don’t forget them, I can’t return. Got it, Go Mi-nam?” It showed the depth of Jeremy and how he had to overcome his heartache to move on in life. Hong Ki plans to return to his real idol life as the lead singer for F.T. Island and their current “Men’s Stories” concert series.
Blue A.N.JELL – The rookie on the set, Jung Yong Hwa came out of nowhere to steal the hearts of fans everywhere. He did a great job in his first acting role as Kang Shin Woo, the sweet and protective member of A.N.JELL who was always there for Mi Nam even when she didn’t know it. My heart stopped during episode 13 when he was speaking to Mi Nam after the shoe fiasco instigated by the evil He Yi, and he said “I haven’t been able to confess my feelings once, but it feels like I’ve been rejected a hundred times. I don’t think I’ll be embarrassed now even if I’m rejected for real.” Great things are in store for Yong Hwa, his band C.N. Blue was recently called back from Japan to perform with F.T.Island at their concerts in Seoul and they’re set to debut in Korea early next year. Yong Hwa was also cast in a new variety show alongside Kim Hyun Joong called Korea Ecosystem Rescue Centre, Hunters in which they hunt wild boars to help control the population which is threatening Korea’s ecosystem.
ArchA.N.JELL – The most experienced actor of the leads, Jang Geun Suk portrayed the musical genius, charismatic, and slightly OCD leader of A.N.JELL, Hwang Tae Kyung. Who didn’t fall in love with the scowling Tae Kyung, with his hidden pain of abandonment, and the indifferent mask he wore to protect himself. His often hilarious interactions with Go Mi Nam and the slow thawing of his heart towards her had fans squealing with glee. His creation of the pig-rabbit for Mi Nam had fans clamoring for their own, which have just been released for sale. The Hong sisters are Geun Suk fans, this is the second drama of theirs he starred in, the first being Hong Gil Dong. Recently on the drama’s homepage, the sisters gave Geun Suk a ‘100 out of 10′ for his portrayal of Hwang Tae Kyung, that’s high praise coming from the writers of the drama. I haven’t read any news of what he’ll be doing next, but he has been flooded with CF offers ranging from cell phones and cameras to cosmetics and clothing. Numerous offers for movies and television have been pouring in for Geun Suk also, so he’ll have his pick of roles to choose from.
Fallen A.N.JELL - Park Shin Hye plays twins Go Mi Nam/Go Mi Nyu in You’re Beautiful. For the most part she is Go Mi Nyu acting as her brother Go Mi Nam who had an unfortunate double eyelid surgery. She plays the part beautifully as the innocent and naive former ‘almost nun.’ She has to portray the gamut of emotions as she learns about life in the ‘real’ world (if you can call life as an idol ‘real’), about first love, deception, heartache, and the ugliness of some. My favorite Mi Nam moment would have to be when she confesses her feelings to Tae Kyung in relation to a star in episode 7, “Hyungnim, right now I only see one special star. There are a great many of them, but this one star sparkles so brightly that I keep only seeing that star.” It was a great scene. It couldn’t have been easy playing a guy for most of the drama, so I think she did a great job. Shin Hye has also been receiving a lot of CF offers, no news yet on what is next in store for her.
Wannabe A.N.JELL – I would be remiss to not mention Uee’s performance in the drama. She played the part of the ‘Fake Fairy’ Yoo He Yi well and had fans loving her and hating her because of it. If it weren’t for her a lot of our favorite scenes would not have been. One of my favorites, the A.N.JELL warfare, when He Yi shows up unannounced and makes Tae Kyung, Shin Woo, and Jeremy cook her lunch. The boys try to retaliate by adding extra ingredients to the pasta like salt, sugar, and vinegar but the wily He Yi catches on and offers it to Mi Nam, but Jeremy takes one for the team and eats it instead. You also felt sorry for He Yi because of her true insecurity and honest affection for Tae Kyung. Life as an idol is not easy for anyone. Uee also returns to her life as a real idol and her group After School. After School has two new members and just made their comeback as a seven member group on Music Bank with their new song “Because of You.”
At the A.N.JELL mini concert that the drama held to be part of the final episode, 2,500 fans showed up after only a few days notice. They sang their songs “Promise” and ”Still” along with a few of their solo songs from the OSTs. All four of the leads Jang Geun Suk, Park Shin Hye , Lee Hong Ki, and Jung Yong Hwa became very close during the filming and there have been talks of A.N.JELL having more performances. At the concert, Jang Geun Suk said that SBS is considering having a season 2 for You’re Beautiful, but no serious plans have been made yet. Most of the cast and crew have mentioned that they would be willing to do a season 2 of the drama. Now if we can just get SBS and the Hong sisters to commit, we’d be set. Now, I am off to watch the last two episodes of You’re Beautiful. I had decided that I would wait until I could watch both with English subs at my leisure to do it and not watch any teasers or read any recaps. This was a HUGE decision for me because I’m the type of person who reads the end of the book halfway through. I had stopped watching K-dramas for a while after having lost interest and You’re Beautiful renewed that craze for me, and yes, it is a craze. If you didn’t watch You’re Beautiful you should give it a try, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. For all my fellow fans out there hopefully, we’ll have a season 2 to look forward to. All I can say is be good and ask Santa, or pray to the K-drama gods, or petition SBS, and it could happen.

The thing with BOF is that it dragged towards the end.
But this one was only 16 eps and every one of them was exciting.
I wish it would’ve done better in Korea, but at least it’s because it was more popular online.
I know Me and my sister were on Viikii every week looking for the new uploads, and sometimes you couldn’t even watch them because so many people were on the site trying to do the same thing.
I want season 2 too. I’m hoping if they do it it will focus on Shinwoo a bit more. Maybe he’ll find a girl?

I love You’re Beautiful; it’s the best drama I’ve seen in a long while. The story was excellently paced so there was no drag and the actors played their characters perfectly.

my husband think that i’m crazy because everytime i watch YAB, nothing else matter. He can’t even talk to me and just glued on my laptop to watch and read all the comments about my fav. YAB. Now that it’s over i feel really empty inside me and i really think that i’m about to go crazy… i need season 2!!!!
LOL. This drama sent me crazy too! Every week, like a lunatic I was straight on to vikii to watch the episodes with subs. But as the drama progressed my madness got worst I did things like watch the episode in Korean (even though I couldn’t understand a word), wake up an hour earlier so I could watch the episode before work – having waited 7 days between episodes, I could wait another 8hrs before I got home!
I loved all the characters – Taekyung owned this drama, he was so charming and charismatic – Jang Geun Suk.
-Minam also was very good, for one of the first times I was really routing for lead actress; I completely brought her character and really wanted her to do well!
- Personally, I usually don’t find the second male leads that interesting – cos they are weirdly devoted to the female and that didn’t really change in this drama – however, Shinwoo in the episode 13 was the first time I was moved and I actually felt pity and sorry for the second lead…..
- Shout out to Jeremy, Hong Yi President Ahn, you guys made me laugh like a banshee at my laptop.
- I could go on and on because like all of you I loved this drama, fingers and toes crossed there will be a season two as I’m already missing these characters. Its really shame you’re Beautiful was put up against IRIS, I think any other time it would have been a big him in Korea not just on the internet.

I would LOVE a Season 2. Oh pleaseee Kdrama Gods, Santa, SBS! I haven’t felt this rush and love for a drama for a long time. The cast and writers have done it for me – they’re perfect. The story is great, Geunseok is my new lover (ahaa), and I would totally support ANJELL if they did come out as a proper idol group. Those guys are really close knit in all the interviews and videos, it’s cute :)
I agree. I love Dramabeans- her recaps are intelligent and they focus on more than just characters, plot, etc- she thinks of everything.

I loved this show!!!! I laughed so hard and wanted to cry so often… My sisters are addicted, too. We’ve determined to buy the DVDs when they come out with complete English subs (subbed extras, please???). We also participated in the international fan project, which was exciting, since Geun Seuk was especially touched by it.

i’ve never had so much fun watching a drama before and i am totally devastated that this show is over. i didn’t plan on watching it at the beginning, but since cutie pie Lee Hong Ki is in it i thought i’d give it a try, and i was hooked after 2 episodes.
Wonderful drama. I was comparing it with BOF all the time and A.N.JELL did not disappoint me once. The girl is adorable and did not irritate me at all – win. Jung Yong Hwa was super duper great (and handsome~) – total win. Jang Geun Suk was, again, second actor who played the role of oh so cool and charismatic main male character and managed to make me want to see him on the screen (and the first one I liked not because he was a good actor, but because Wu Zun is extremely gorgeous). Probably I liked Jang Geun Suk because his acting was not limited to walking around with bulging eyes? When I remember that failure of acting cast in BOF I feel that A.N.JELL deserves Oscar, I swear.
The only bad thing is that the plot was, well, very common and ordinary but the details were made nicely so I still had pleasure watching A.N.JELL. It’s a pity it ended, really.
Very nice overall review of the YAB. This is the first drama that really got me into the fangirl mode. First time I am willing to watch it even without subbing because I could not bear to wait the extra 2 days.

This is one of my favorite drama … not only it caught my attention, but it also becomes part of my routine … This is a great blog and I enjoy reading everything about YB. I love all the characters .. each of them are very special and this is something you don’t really find in other drama. Thanks for all the upload and it has been a great journey. Like you, I have stopped watching kdramas for a while. YB has brought me back full force. It’s very tough to find another drama that can beat this in my book. I watch IRIS too but it does not have the same impact.

OH MY GOD, I just watched the last two eps last night. I can’t believe it ended. I didn’t want it to end and now that it did, I don’t know what I’m going to do. This kdrama is one of my favorite.
I love all the actors and everything about it. I enjoyed it so much that I’m praying for 2 season.
I’m def going to miss it. NOW I’m gonna have to look for something else to watch….but i don’t think there is a drama that is interesting, fun, and enjoyable kdrama than this (except for Smile, you).

I agree storywise YB is way better than BOF thats why Im so suprise why the rating is so low…First thing I thought is maybe its bec. of JGS but when I think about it he really fits TK like a glove…I don’t think its bec. of Iris why the low ratings..bec I remember right BOF is head to head also with East of Eden before and they pull off 2o’s/30 ish..Sorry but I don’t want a Season 2…

I totally agree with you on the Season 2 thing. I have been really thinking about whether or not it would be good to have a Season 2. And I say no. Because it feels like it would drag on. I mean I wish this drama was at least 20 eps. But it still ended off greatly. It gave me excitement, fantasies, and lots of eye candy:) One season is enough for me. You’re Beautiful was truly a wonderful drama. I enjoyed very much! I swear, I was like a crazy person when it came out, this gave me something to look forward to after school! Made my weeks go by really fast. (And it did, it’s already been like a month!?) And I would get so excited about an ep I would talk about it to my mom at dinner LMAO. Of course she didn’t care, but I wanted to tell somebody. And I got my friend hooked onto it, then my friend got her friend hooked, hahaha! And it really does suck that it had to go up against IRIS, because You’re Beautiful deserves to be popular:) But also I guess I’m kinda glad or else it would end up like BOF with a extremely dragged on ending. You’re Beautiful had a wonderful fan base on the internet & internationally, so everything really turned out for the best. At first I compared it a lot with BOF, and I think lots of people had done this too, but as the story progressed I dropped the BOF comparison, because it is completely different from it, and I REALLY liked this storyline a whole lot better. This seriously is one of my top favorite dramas. This gave me everything I could ask for! The laughs, the quirky dialogs, the funny scenes, and an AMAZING CAST. And seriously this is the first time I actually likes the WHOLE main cast. Their acting was superb & Shinhye can really cry! I loved the emotion and time that the actors/actresses gave to this drama. And you can really see their chemistry:)) I applaud UEE as well! At first I saw her as a bitch, and I’m sorry to UEE for that because I was going along with everyone else. Saying that she shows up too much, and she’s mean, and she can’t act, etc etc. But really she isn’t that bad! And without her the story couldn’t have progressed. Her acting MADE US dislike her. Now that’s ACTING. If she couldn’t achieve that then we could call her a bad actress. But she did it well! And I never really knew her personality very much until I started watching some shows with her in it, and she seems very shy and sweet. So good job UEE:) Geunsuk was soooooo amazing! It’s one of those dramas that you fall in love with the 2nd main character (shinwoo) but then you start liking the main guy. (taekyung) I loved his voice and how he said “Go Mi Nam”, the puckering of his lips (AHH gonna miss that), his tough guy attitude, but really he has deep feelings too. Loved it, loved the character. I feel in love with him. Shinwoo the guy who totally made me fall for him when he wore those glasses and hat and followed Mi Nam around Myungdong. He portrayed the character well, although sometimes I got annoyed of him because his he was so slow at telling mi nam how he really felt. And finally Jeremy. AHH! I love this guy:) He did set the mood, and he had the cutest lines & acting! Like when they all went to the market to buy food and he did the little CF parts that A.N.Jell did. So ADORABLE. Also how he ate A LOT of food. HAHA. Don’t lie you guys, he did eat a lot lmao! And who could forget the incredible acting with the crying!! I was like dang! Hongki is doing superb acting! I cried so much that scene. It was amazing & I liked him a whole lot after that because he was so straight forward with his feelings. It was great. And so cute with the whole “magic bus”. Kinda sad that Jeremy didn’t show up a whole lot though. :/ Ooops! I can’t forget the supporting cast too! Manager and coordi! Hahaha secret love relationship? HEHE. Loved their fantasies! SO FUNNY! And the pres. with his “JACKPOT” lines. Loved the supporting cast, loved the people in it, loved the characters. One of the best dramas I have seen! I thank you Hong sisters for writing such a marvelous drama! Thank you actors & actresses! I enjoyed this drama so much! :DDD And you can tell I really liked this one because this comment is really long hehehe:) You’re Beautiful JJANG! <333

I got hooked from the 1st episode, that never happened to me before. Every week I would wait for new episode may it be subbed or not. My favorite scene would have to be jeremy’s confession to minam, I cried buckets because of that scene. If there would be a season 2 I hope that they focuse on the other characters like shinwoo or Jeremy, coz it kinda sucked that they weren’t even there when it ended.

Hello fellow YB-addict. Someone asked me what am I doing after YB? My answer was re-watching and reading any news I can get regarding the wonderful casts. So, 3 days later (in remission so to speak) after the last episode, here I am reading and venting my feelings on your news while listening to their soundtrack which by the way is in loop at work. It’s hard for me to go back on my usual acitivites as this drama totally dominated my life for the last 21/2 months. Regarding season 2, I doubt they are going to go for one, I for one is very much happy with the ending. Season 2 would just probably would ruin the whole thing for me and I don’t want that. I want to keep my YB experience as one of those in a lifetime pleasurable moments. Now, I want the DVD Director’s Cut that was the talk about in most forum….I want those deleted scenes……of course with subtitle :)
Ohhh there might be a Director’s Cut DVD…..i would be all over that. I want more of this show, i feel like i haven’t had my fill of the characters yet, so i say BRING IT ON!!!!
Rabid fans?? Hee, the whole crashing thing made me laugh – I always miss out on that because of the time difference. It would’ve been nice to see what it was like.
One thing I found great about this drama and its following was that there weren’t any (or none that I knew of) haters. Everyone was genuinely enjoying the show, I certainly loved it and want it as a DVD set. And it’s the first drama I’ve ever followed like this!
I’m not actually a k-drama fan, and YB has set the bar so high I don’t think I’ll be following any for a while! Loved it, and thanks hijinx for covering YB-related news!

It’s been 4 days since i last watched it’s last episode and i still don’t know what i would do to fill in my W and Th early mornings, yes, i even subscribed to TVU and Livestation so i can watche it live!
I’m so glad that LA18 here in California decided to air it with English subs. The first Ep was shown Thanksgiving evening, that was a truly wonderful gift. I can’t wait to rewatch it again on Wed and Thurs at 945pm!
I am really looking forward to purchasing a Director’s cut DVD with eng sub and hopefully i’d be able to watch the edited/deleted scenes (esp the elevator scene and elevator kiss that we didn’t get to see) and BTS with the actors great camaraderie. I so love all the ANJELLS, they truly did perform to the best of their abilities, that’s how very convincing they were with each of their performance, from JGS to PSH to LHK and to JYH.
I wish all of these ANJELLS the success they deserve and hopefully will stay as humble as they are with their fans who catapulate them to reach the top of their stardom.
I hope that they will be given the chance to work together again and that we’d love them even more the second time around!

I LOVE this drama… No other K drama had me so hooked in 2009… Best cast ever.. It’s the first time i’ve loved the ENTIRE cast of a K drama… gonna miss A N Jell… YongHwa best male newcomer…love him!

Wow, the drama was this good?! I’ve heard of it but I wasn’t too sure whether to watch it or not. But from this review and the overwhelmingly positive comments about the show, I think I’ll check out the show when I have some freetime. I miss watching some good K-Drama (since I’m one of those people who stop halfway too because of a boring, bland plot or whatnot).

Haven’t been this happy with a drama since Coffee Prince…. Light and Fun but very addictive drama!!..
Each of them portrayed the characters very well… even Uee who is a new played so well that i hated her so much in the drama but back to liking her in WGM lol…
and I’m falling so hard for A.N.JELL
JangGeunSuk rare smiles in the drama made me scream so hard…
ParkShinHye is pretty.. pity that her hair was not that nice in the last episode… but still i love her…
HongKi is the cutest boy… omg… even with the weird hairstyles,, he’s so cute!!

You’re Beautiful not sure if I want a season 2 unless it can live up or top the master piece original. As is I expect it to be come a kdrama cult classic!!! More and more people will discover the show over time and when they do they will see that the ratings really is factored wrong on this one. Online views need to be factored in because more and more people watch this way.
I can’t put into words how happy this drama made me over the past two months… but am I the only fan who is a little wary of a season two? It feels like the story we all tuned in for has been told. I *love* the ending as it is. YB will be the first k-drama I buy on DVD <333

Shining inheritance – was OK to me if I left some episodes.
But for YAB I couldn’t bear off its magnetic attraction.
I laughed, I cried, I was deeply touched. Love JGS, PSH, JYH, Hong ki so much!!! This is the first drama ever which drive me crazy that much. Because of YAB, I’ve joined in alot of site just for watching the newest eps ASAP (even without subs) and express my feelings toward YAB’s cast&crew … YAB made me do many many things that was once unbelievable to me before.
JGS not just gorgeus, he’s such a talented actor/singer and he did a fantastic job being portray HTK – I adore both JGS and HTK ^^
It’s been more than a week since the last ep. Since then, it feels like I’ve missed something really good. I miss YAB so badly, and I need YAB2 so badly!
At least, I love to see them together once again.

omgs i remember when viikii started to have server problems around like the 14 ep i started to watch it in this korean streaming site raw good thing i am pretty fluent in korean but still i lvoe this drama. I am a jang geun suk fan myself so thats why i started to watch it but i fell inlove wit the whole cast!!

I think YB is one of the best korean dramas ever made with good actors and actresses, witty lines, and good directing. Jang geun seok was really good..he really shine in this drama. It’s a pity koreans didn’t appreciate this more. I also watched iris, i didn’t even finish episode one. To all YB casts, to the writers, the director…. be proud . You made one beautiful drama. I hope we will have other dramas just as good as this one.
Sooooo hard to find the right word to describe how crazy i am with this drama. Ist drama i watch online which i never done before esp korea dramas. Have to wake-up as early as 4am ( Malaysia time) to watch the drama on my note book. Really killed my patience but it worth it. Love everyone in ANJELL esp Gi Minam, Manager Ma, Pres. Ahn and the rest of group of Anjell but loves more Go Minam from the rest…
Hope there is season 2 or any sequel from this drama.
