For some odd reason, it usually takes me 5-6 listening sessions for me to fall in love with a song, but this little melodic gem had me at “hello.”
Park Bom’s “You and I” shot up the music charts ever since it debuted not too long ago and it looks as if it’s reign as queen top dog is nowhere near over. According to one of Korea’s music portal sites, www.dosirak.com, the song re-claimed it’s #1 spot after having slightly been beaten by Ivy’s “Goodbye Tears ” last week.
And she finally made her solo performance debut at SBS’ “Inkigayo.” She was poised, classy, and that voice, THAT VOICE. Although, I kept waiting for Dara, Minzy and CL to pop out as surprise back-up dancers. Darn.
The music video for You and I kinda made the song bitter sweet for me.
The performance was really sweet =)
A few slip ups here and there but vocals were awesome hope she improves more.
the performance was alright for me… i think she could have done better but the song is amazing…its like my fav song right now..i wish she could have a back up singers instead..
still not digging the song..wonder why
great performance from Bom. however, the backup dancers were awkward (especially glasses dude). the dance moves were good..but the dancers were lifeless.
kind of agree, except i think the dance wasn’t that great either. with better dancrs,
more rythmn, and better pacing then i probably wouldn’t have noticed. still, good preformance. i really like her voice.
I know some people won’t agree, but I don’t understand all the hype over Park Bom.
Her voice is unique because it has a distinct sound. You always know when she is singing on any track. But her vocals/range are not as incredible as her fans claim. I do enjoy hearing her voice over a nice melody, but there are times when she gets very nasally.
I have to agree with you. I know her voice is extremely rare for an Asian, but she’s always kinda reminded me of Rihanna, and by no means is Rihanna a good singer. I watched her audition video and I was impressed, but since then I haven’t seen her perform anything that shows off true vocal ability. Tone is only one part of being a good vocalist, If she belted, or hit some high notes I’d be impressed, but as of right now she’s in the area with the rest of the average R&B singers (Taeyang, Rain, etc…)
Did you just put her next to male R&B singers? Seriously, she has some mad vocals and it is rare to find that kind of tone in Korea. I would have to disagree. She does not have a voice like Rihanna. I know she has some flaws in singing but no one said she had the best voice in the country. She has a UNIQUE voice that is difficult to find.
Although I’m YG biased most of the time, I think the writer is correct in saying Park Bom has an amazing voice that should be recognized.
And personally, I don’t think it’s fair to compare her to Rihanna considering Rihanna has been in the music mainstream longer than her and they speak different languages. Korean language sounds and tones are much different from English and I believe cannot be compared. And did you ever watch the video where Park Bom and the rest of 2NE1 sang Rihanna’s song “Take a Bow”? I believe Park Bom did better than Rihanna herself did on that song even though she’s not fluent at English like Rihanna!
I also agree with Um…, and it’s wrong to bunch her up next to male singers when she’s female. And Taeyang and Rain are more than just “average” R&B singers considering their success thus far.
I agree. I like 2NE1 and Bom but I have yet to be blown away by her vocals. Before I heard Big Bang’s “Forever with you” I never thought her voice was a big deal but she sounds really good on that song. I dunno if it’s song choice but I haven’t experienced the chills her fans have said they get when they hear her voice. Yes the tone is unique in Asia but I mean I’m not going to name names but there are plenty of Kpop singers who have blown me away.
But if you hear Forever With You, you can tell that she sings at an octave lower than in You and I. That’s probably why she is so out of breath all the time because it is kind of too high for her. I guess that’s what they do with all artists like Wondergirls. When they debuted with Irony, they all sang at a pretty low range but after that, (So hot, Nobody) they sing so high and maybe that’s why Sohee always struggles in all their songs.
I agree, Forever With You is one of my favourite songs because I just absolutey adore Bom’s voice there. It’s the only song that I’ve ever loved her voice in. I wish she would sing like that instead of the way she does now, it’s like she can control her voice at times and it sounds like she’s screaming during others.
She does have a unique voice though, and I love her but after hearing FWY, I see nothing special in the way she sings now.
Performance was shaky vocal wise, dance was just hella awakward and made me dislike the 2nd half of the performance, there was no chemistry on stage but that’s something that comes with confidence I guess and that’s what she needs to work on. She can do it though, I believe in her haha ^_^
I think once she gets over her nerves, the performance will be sick :)
I sort of have the agree. She sounded amazing on some of her audition videos but now her voice is kinda nasally and I agreed with Kuy, she sounds like Rihanna at times (and I can’t stand Rihanna’s voice sometimes). Yes its a unique voice but that doesn’t make it a great voice.
I’m writing this as I’m listening to the song and I must say that she has some pitchy and screechy parts in there and it sounds like she has some breathing issues. I think she just needs to work on not singing through her nose and breathing and then she would sound much much better.
my thoughts exactly. especially on the breathing.
The dancer seemed nervous and awkward dancing with her.
i’m just gonna say as my personal opinion that the main dancer was probably hella awkward because he just flew in on a red-one from Japan to do the perf with Bom and then flew back once his bit was over. and yes, i am pertaining to one Dong Young Bae in a wig. the silliohette of the dancer was too close to his, the body waves with the 2-step was again, too close…and the “tallness”–totally calling “manheels” (risers) in his shoes. and then the messages from aimee (YG choreographer responsible the dance break) and timing between U&I and Wedding Dress vid shoots…anyone got a different opinion?
i can’t exactly point out… i know she had surgery and all but did she get botox? she’s only 84 tho!
Ah, you’re referring to the fact that Bom’s face doesn’t….well move. .__.
so disagree. i knew the song was going to suck the minute YG starting boasting about it before it was ever release. the way they were going on i was expecting something like “haruharu” (tasha’s epic gem) or something along the lines of a hwayobi hit (nunmool, aesseo, sarangeun, etc. you take your pick their all great) but no what i get is something over produced with the awful music so high i can barely hear bom’s voice. i’m still waiting for that great vocal performance form her. she needs wheesung to write her song like now. i did force myself to listen to the song and the lyrics are not but the music is too horrible for me to listen to it. YG i thought you were a hiphop company not stupid club music producers? the music industry is oh so bad nowadays. thank the gods for lady collection and secret. they put out good quality music though no one is listening to them
I love Lady Collection and I agree that they have talent but no one listens to them. But Secret sucks no offense. I totally disagree…You and I is a great song
Seoulbeats your yg bias is showing again, and it’s kind of annoying. You guys are human but as a news source it would be cool if you spread the love a little.
Seriously i really like the song but the perfomance was awkward, i don’t know where they got the glasses guy from but he looked so uncomfortable dancing. Also it worries me that Bom can only show like 4 emotions on her face.
just letting you know that there are a bunch of writers on seoulbeats, not just one. so don’t try and change something that someone likes. it’s obvious that you think it’s annoying because you don’t like YG. if you don’t agree, then don’t read the topic. done.
Um.. if I would call anything fucking biased, I would look at the front page of this site and wonder why the majority has 2PM plastered all over it. That’s what I call “fucking” biased..
Now, let me stop joking.. see how dumb that sounded? I’ll be honest, the article just stating how good Park Bom is in her debut performance from the WRITER’S perspective. :/ The writer is not claiming how everyone think she’s great. So, get off your high horse and calm down.
I was pleasantly surprised at her live vocals
I’ve always loved Bom, the unique voice and all that. And although it does sound a bit nasally at times, like when notes are held out and such, I still believe she is a step above if not more, than the run of the mill singers that are pretty prominent in kpop these days. And with time, I’m sure she’ll be able to do even more wonders with her voice. And although some people may not call her voice amazing, just the way she sounds in general sets her apart from the rest.
I completely agree with you about Bom and her voice. Though she may not have the best control, there is definitely color/depth and potential that not all kpop singers have – it’s just waiting to be honed and refined. What Bom lacks is confidence in her own abilities as well as focus – she get’s distracted easily, which reflects in how she sings. She also needs to build stamina in order to maintain consistency. Once she is able to overcome those obstacles, I think she’ll really be able to show her talents.
The performance gave a hint of her abilities when she was sitting and singing (and loved the she was showing more expressions than usual), but the dancing part showed how much more she still has to grow. :)
ok honestly… i’d much rather hear her recorded. those high notes were quite harsh on the ears >_<
but she did look VERY cute!
OOhhhh! this is my current favorite song (after lachata, after abracadabra)!!!
I am not superbly impressed with her voice. I do agree, she gets all nasal now and then. I think she can still improve with practice.
But, the beat/melody of the song is so addictive! Been listening to it for weeks now!
btw, I did love her mv of that song…. was nearly crying…!!!
I honestly think Her, Taeyeon, and the main vocal from secret had the best voice in female singer in Korea today.
BBOMMMM!!!!
finally making her debut as a solo singer! so proud of her!
i like the song and all..but i’m kinda hearing YB’s “where u at?” a little..
i don’t know, maybe it’s just me..
well, it is you…but yeah, i understand where you getting at. Teddy Park’s producing their songs and tends to be using that same beat/tempo through most of YG’s “slow” songs lately. I don’t know if it’s cuz he IS producing back-to-back constantly, or doesn’t really pay close attention to notice that he re-hashes the same beat for recent mid-tempo’d songs. or that he is aware and don’t give a shit *highly doubt the last one*.
I like her performance its her first one by herself and without 2ne1 so good job bom!!!!
She isn’t very consistent isn’t she..she sounded so much better when she was sitting down. And her FACE..I don’t know if it is the makeup or she looked more plastic than she ever was.
Just because Bom has a unique voice does not in any way make her amazing.
Uniqueness is not nessisarily good.
^I’m being cynical again…XDDDDD;
I can’t see the hype.
Her singing is average and I just don’t like it.
I’m trying to see if I can warm up to her – sometimes I do love someones song or singing after a bit, but right now, her voice is just something I would rather skip out on.
Kudos for soloing though!
i think she’s struggling there with some high notes. i noticed that she’s always had this problem with her breathing when she sings. she tends to get out breath real easily.
she’s a very good singer but she needs to work on more in terms of being a performer.
