Jessica Does, Uhm… Korean Broadway!

Lee_Honey_Jessica_Kim_Ji-woo_nov26_seoulbeats

SNSD’s Jessica has taken to the stage in the Korean production of the hit- movie turned hit-Broadway musical Legally Blonde. Jessica plays the lead as Elle Woods, a sorta ditzy- but actually really smart college student who gets dumped by her boyfriend for a, “smarter”, less blonde law student. In a desperate attempt to get him back Elle applies and gets accepted into Law School. But she soon realizes that her life doesn’t revolve around her jerk of an ex-boyfriend and comes into her own as a more-than-capable future lawyer.

If this was a spoiler for you, you should have seen the movie. It’s been out since 2001!

P.S. Did you know Legally Blonde was originally a novel?!

My Opinion: I don’t wanna be a downer, but I think Jessica is just too reserved to play Elle Woods. It’s not fair to compare her to the original Broadway Elle Woods (Laura Bell Bundy), but nothing about her performance screams “Musical Production” for me. Musicals are loud, funny, and most importantly over-the-top and exaggerated. Watching Jessica perform makes me think of her normal performances on Music Core or Inkigayo with SNSD.

Yeah… Jessica need to get more loose with her role…

The only reason why she got the role cuz she’s bankable… that’s about it. and she did make the musical #1 according to the ticket sales.

Ouch, that was borderline painful to watch Jessica as Elle Woods. Her acting and singing are way too understated/weak. I’ve read her voice described as “delicate,” but frankly I think she’s one of the weaker female idol singers out there despite having trained for so many years.

The best Korean Elle Woods (without regard to ticket sales/media attention) would probably be a non-idol singer. But if it had to be an SNSD girl, I think Tiffany would have been better because she has a much stronger voice and seems bubblier.

    it’s painful to watch..
she got a weak voice for a broadway musical…she cracked, she failed to hit most of her notes, ran out of air and weak acting…

i agree with wooopie the only reason why she landed on the role is to earn viewers…but the quality sucks..

I had hopes when I first got wind of the news. It was even on the news here in Singapore.

I thought maybe she has some surprises up her sleeves. She has a pleasant enough voice, but I agree, she’s just not meant for the musical stage.

I love the korean productions of various western musicals like Romeo & Juliette, Les Miserables, Phantom, Sweeney Todd etc. And I dare say the quality of korean musical actors and actresses gives their western counterparts a run for their money.

Jessica still has a long way to go.

    old news. tsk tsk!

Ahhh it’s so painful to seeeee and especially compared to Laura Bundy and even all those other girls who tried out on that mtv series to be the new Elle Woods. It’s disappointing. Broadway is supposed to be super exaggerated with big voices and even bigger movements. Jessica failed to deliver… but I’m not too surprised. Dancing in a music video and performing choreographed routines are totally different than acting and dancing with feeling on a Broadway stage. A for effort?

lol that was bad. who bright idea was it to give jessica the lead role in a musical when her voice is to soft and cracks in snsd performance. i bet she never watched laura bell bundy rendition so she can know what it suppose to look like.

  9. wackyU says:

she was just chosen cos they think she’s famous and looks good in blonde. gah.

  10. Daydream says:

jessica has a pleasant voice, but she lacked energy. the performance was just slightly cringe-worthy and underwelming.

  11. zic says:

i anticipate many men in their business suits to be attending this play….lol

i like jessica, but a musical?? really? makes no sense whatsoever.

  12. Mela says:

Anything that Sica does is entertaining for me (rofl) but of course, she’s in this musical just for ticket sales. This stage is obviously lacking but considering that it’s her first time, it’s not really that awful. I’m pretty sure she will do better on her actual stage.

I wish I could go. Broadway is <3.

    Jessica rocks!

  14. iskandar says:

dun ever insult sica lah she fresh one doesnt really know about opera lah……

Jessica is a gorgeous girl, but my goodness she really can’t sing. She sings through her nose and it shows. She was off pitch at points and sometimes it was painful to listen to. Jessica comes off as timid and prissy. The chorus line was able to overpower her because they sang well and danced with more energy. I hope the other two actresses playing.

I’m wondering if Legally blond will translate well to the Korean Culture especially those not so exposed to american Culture. I mean the “Dumb Blond” cliche that Legally Blond rides on is a American or western stereotype. So culturally and and biologically it doesn’t exist in Korea. i guess there are airhead or ditz’s in every country, but this play is very American.

Yah, Jessica doesn’t really have a voice fit for a musical.

  17. hostclub17 says:

is this her first musical? cut her some slack guys. atleast she didn’t do something like romeo and juliet. XD

  18. mili says:

I’m a regular attandee at my school’s musical production. And compared to the students at my college, Jessica is painfully weak.

She sure did get the ticket sales up, but I can’t imagine how painful it is to the professionals that work so hard that the main role is given to her…

  19. Jenni Kim says:

I don’t really know much about musicals or drama, but even I could tell this was really a weak performance for a musical actress.
