DBSK performs as 5 and Changmin has new hair

dbskstandbyu_20091117_seoulbeats

It was probably the shortest performance of “Stand By U” to date, but you can bet that DBSK fans everywhere were thrilled out of their wits to see their favorite five boys up on stage again. The Best Hit Music Awards 2009 aired on Japan’s Nihon TV last night, with all of Japan’s biggest stars holding top-rate performances. But despite all this, Cassies and Bigeast were on the lookout for one thing…DBSK’s first appearance in Japan since A-nation in August. Check it out below…

Not absolutely stunning (I mean, in comparison to their performance of the song at Tokyo Dome this summer), but not bad. It’s really apparent that Junsu and Yoochun sure missed singing; they’re probably the liveliest out of the bunch here. Jaejoong, on the other hand, just seems kind of blah. I don’t know about you, but judging from Jaejoong’s public appearances lately–fanmeets for Heaven’s Postman, airport pics, and especially last week’s MAMA–he’s been looking kind of depressed. It worries me.

(Don’t kill me for speculating, but is anyone else getting a really awkward vibe here? Not necessarily from the performance; I think that that’s been rehearsed way too many times for awkwardness to be a factor, but in the interview after the performance, as well as this super awkward interview taken before the show…Jaejoong looks so small.)

And of course we can’t miss out on a major highlight for fangirls everywhere…Changmin’s new hair! As first fully witnessed in airport stalkercams from Yunho and Changmin’s departure from Incheon Airport last night…

It took a few minutes, but it’s definitely growing on me. Personally, I think it’s a positive change from that modified bowlcut he was sporting during Mirotic promotions…which I didn’t mind that much, but it made him look old. The combination of the lighter color and the bangs sure do make him look younger.

Oh, wait. Maybe this is why…

2009…

changmin3_20091127_seoulbeats

….and 2004. LOL.

But I mean, if they’re going to film for Paradise Meadow soon…Changmin having the same appearance that he had when he was 15 probably won’t help the whole ‘I’m a tired divorcee’ look. Meh. We’ll just have to see.

Oh, and for all you VIPs out there, don’t fret…Big Bang performed as well, and it was awesome, as usual. Big Bang is certainly making its way up in the J-pop scene…just listen to the screaming fans! Props to an excellent performance.

(And lulz to the English subtitles for GD’s rap. Seems like the production staff really wanted those lyrics to be accurate to a T. “Fo sho.”)

that was a long ass article…oh boy.

never heard that song before, but it just confirmed that i liked them better in japan.

    bb …lol

  3. Vanessay says:

OMO i totally agree with jaejoongs depressed appearances lately…it really worries me…not only does he look extremely tired it even appears to be that he is slighty suffering from a depression….he is like so down and mellow…and kinda outta space. I hope he doesn;t do anything drastic…he is still my favorite hubby

  4. soforo says:

    junsu is really a pro

he tried to smile during the interview and his singing is superb.

if this is how jaejoong will act in public, he better take a hiatus instead. He look so depressed and frozen.

  5. Caseyjayms says:

Oh, wow…that must have been a painful interview to be in. Yunho is the only one who talked. No random but funny comments from Jaejoong. No explosive laugh from Junsu. and Jaejoong looks like he was dragged by the neck to go that interview. He looks so depressed…

  6. Momo says:

The interview was extremely AWKWARD imo and Jaejoong’s mind was not there…

  7. Dnay says:

ay what is this recurring gap between hero and max?! they actually let yh talk with no interruptions! no secret giggles between micky and max..and xiah keeping still!! i really wanted to see them together in japan but after watching that i’m kinda scared actually.. i can’t wait til this whole issue is over

  8. Jenny says:

poor DBSK, at least they sounded fairly decent….and omg jaejoong is so small and skinny and out of it. I want to bring him home and feed him and then make him get tons of rest.

So finally I see a Big Bang japanese performance with some energy from ALL the members. Lately some of their japaense performances have been rather lack luster and GD and TOP looked completely out of it there for a while. idk they have just sort of lost their group “cohesion” (?) and it seems to me like seungri is the only one who actually enjoys still performing as big bang

With DBSK falling apart at the seams and Big Bang members going off and enjoying solo activities more than group activities it seems like an era is ending or something….not that that is necessarily a bad thing

  9. toho says:

Jaejoong seems to be out of space in that interview because he is the only one without earphones, though i agree he’s been looking sad these days..

  10. supernova says:

    Awww Changmin is cuuuute!

  11. Dana says:

that was so painful and disheartening. Regardless of what happens to the group (stay together please), I hope they can mend their friendship. They have been too close for too long to have this dark veil over them…
    gah. so sad.

  12. lovechuu says:

What happened to Soulfighters? There’s an obvious gap between Jaejoong and Changmin. In fact, it kind of seems as if Changmin is hiding behind Yunho, what with always being a step behind him and being glued to his side.

    • lenrasoon says:

yeah i notice that too, changmin is almost “hiding” behind Yunho and is clear the they’re (DBSK) tense.

    • Ms Lullaby says:

During the interview, Yunho tries too hard with his forced smile, Changmin looks scared (hiding behind Yunho), Jaejoung looks “confused by his punishment” (doesn’t he look like he’s being punished?), Yoochun and Xiah look bored, especially Yoochun. It seems that from time to time Yunho and Max look more to the left and the other 3 more to the right (like at 1:05), and there’s a GAP between the 2 “parties”. Their body language says it all. This is so hard to watch.

  13. roamer33 says:

I keep wanting to think that this is nothing but seriously that was awkward. I don’t think Jaejoong could make it any more clear that he just didn’t want to be there — even during the performance (I normally love his voice but that was not impressive). I want to see all of them smiling again even if that means they have to split up. I have faith that they all have brilliant careers ahead of them because of their talent.

And lovechuu I totally agree about Changmin, what was that?

  14. lenrasoon says:

about the awkward interview, they’re probably not even talking to each other behind the scenes which is sad

i’m not a fan but i don’t like to see them like that…

  15. Ms Lullaby says:

Cantoallavita you won’t get killed, you just felt what we all felt. It’s beyond obvious that they’re DIVIDED. They can’t even hide it. They’re divided in interviews and even in live performances. It’s heartbreaking. I wanted to see them perform together, but now that I’m seeing the result of that so called “reunion” I don’t need to see any other performance or interview of DBSK until they work that thing out. I might as well see JaeYooXiah (or whatever people call them) together, and the other 2 together, in seperate interviews or events. My worst fear was to see their friendship being ruined. What we’re witnessing is too painful to watch.

  16. chuchu says:

The performance was very sad. Very very sad. I can’t wait until this is alllllll over.

  17. syrene says:

D: Jae really does seem down.

    Jae fighting!
    DBSK fighting!

    Always Keep The Faith <3

  18. Natasha says:

Unlike the other comments, mine shall be about Big Bang xD. Although, I love that DBSK is back as 5 once more ^^.

Is it just more or does Big Bang’s perf. sound angry ? O,o, or maybe it’s just TOP….

Anyway, love them both ^^ <3.

  19. XD says:

    OMG THAT HAIR!!!!!!! XD
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

like hitler’s asian son *falls* XD

  20. Mena says:

Seriously, I love all 5 of those boys (DBSK) but if this is what their group has been brought to on stage together, then I would rather not witness it. The initial interview in particular was painful to watch. Only Yunho spoke, and you could definately tell that his jovility was faked. You all know how his voice gets higher pitched when he is happy, that was missing. The normal gestures and banter between Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu wasn’t even there. They all looked like they were at a funeral.

I almost felt like crying. I mean, maybe we should just let them go. Maybe the era IS over for DBSK. Who wanted this to be the last memories that we have of them as a group of loving brothers and gifted artists??!?? I know I didn’t.

  21. mishmash says:

    Ditto to everything.

Good performance but so awkward..and so sad to watch. Even though that is how they are always positioned in Japan, the current circumstances just makes the divide seem all the more obvious, 2 to one side and 3 to the other.

I’ve rewatched their Tokyo Dome concert many times and it just reminds me what a GREAT loss it would be to the world of jpop/kpop if Tohoshinki/DongBangShinKi were to disband.

The 5 of them shine when they’re together and, it does feel the end of an era.

Sigh. It does seem unlikely that the rift between them and SM will be mended, and with that, the rift between the 2-3. =(

I don’t think SM has any fear of losing DBSK. History is merely repeating itself and they are confident that they recreate it once more. As far as they’re concern, they can make or break you. I just hope SM do not resort to dirty underhanded tricks to undermine the reputations of the trio in Korea as well as Japan like what they did in the H.O.T situation. =(

  22. lovemixin says:

i prefer not seeing them at all if theyre gonna look like that.

everything seems so forced 0_0 and look at jae! duuudeee… its like he’s not even there with him. its like… he’s just there but… not really there 0.o

and changminn looks like he lost some major weight 0.0

no matter how much they wanna show the fans that dbsk is still strong as five, you can tell there’s some tension there. argghh T_T

everything just seems wrong to me.

  23. lovemixin says:

oh. jae you better not be thinking about that bad suicidal list !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i will have to slap some sense in to you >:(
please bring back that random speaks-whats-in-his-mind jaejoong :(

  24. ^O^ says:

~sigh~, what can i say? they’re together after so many months and they’re like this -sad, depressed, strained…
is this really what DBSK is? looks like they can’t even keep the faith -and it is getting hard.
it broke my heart to see them like this…
look at yunho in the 1st vid: 2:03
it’s just disheartening to see them like this… if this is how it’s gonna be… i don’t think that even i can keep the faith any longer…

    • ^O^ says:

oh, and i agree with Ms lullaby -the worst part to watch is the fact that there’s a huge rift forming in their friendship…

  25. xmizzzy says:

i regret watching it now. its so depressing to see them like that. i think i’ll refrain from watching anything from them until/if things get better. at least until Kohaku

  26. xmizzzy says:

& might i add Changmin looks mighty fine w. that haircut.

  27. rxlcrab says:

There is absolutely nothing wrong with DBSK’s live performance! As a matter of fact they sang very well indeed! Just because they’re subdued in interview doesn’t mean that the 5 can not provide a professional performance when they needed to! I personally enjoyed the performance very much, and the length is the usual one they have for their SBU promotions. Yes it is short, but they’ve not had a chance to practice for anything else, so it’ll have to do for now. Hopefully the FNS festival will be much better.

    • chuchu says:

Okay…I think you must have watched another performance because there WAS something wrong with the performance in the video listed above.

  28. Coutura says:

The interview with DBSK really did seem very awkward… maybe I’m reading too much into it, but there seemed to be a huge space between Yunho/Changmin and Jaejoong/Yoochun/Junsu. Changmin stood really close to Yunho the entire time, and the whole thing was just kind of sad, none of their usual energy at all … but at least they performed together. That’s something.

Big Bang was good! haha GD’s foot-tall hair is still present

  29. Vina says:

Tohoshinki’s performance was good. Junsu and Yoochun were stellar. Jaejoong…I think some people are letting their own emotions color what they’re seeing with him. Stand By U is a fairly subdued song, not some lively number, and Jaejoong doesn’t have very exuberant parts until more towards the end…which obviously weren’t in this shortened version.

The interviews though did have an awkward vibe, which is frankly what I was expecting. Being all over each other and super-happy would’ve been just plain weird.

    • jennifer says:

I agree with you. This is the first time that i have actually listened to this song live before and i think they did a good job. Even though i didnt like seeing them sad though…
      TT

I cant find the other interview…do you know where its at? the one above is from before i heard there was one after and i cant find it……do you know?

      • Vina says:

Probably if you search for the performance on youtube or wherever you will find it. They did it right after the performance of the guy who came after them.

  30. DD says:

I almost feel like the appa and the umma of the band have divorced and Yunho is taking the baby with him and Jaejoong is sad… I wish the five would reconcile…

  31. jankenpo says:

    THERE’S A DIVISION.

    Changmin is so obvious.

    • lene says:

oh yes, I totally agree with you. frankly speaking, I doubt I would have found the interview awkward if not for Changmin. Because Jae doesn’t always talk, so it’s just like back to those days when Yunho does all the talking. And it’s normal to let Yunho do all the talking and the rest keep quiet since he is the leader. but Changmin… it’s like he’s trying to keep himself away from Jae during both interviews and just stay close to Yunho. the way he acted is like he’s not familiar with the other three on his other side and he’s in this totally new environment where he can only depend on Yunho.

awkward )): I think the rest of them tried to act okay with the situation but Changmin… couldn’t.

  32. joycb says:

happy to see them after a long time but i feel kinda sad seeing them like this =(

please DBSK, dont be so depressed. im afraid of what depression can do…

  33. obsidian says:

Yes!! I was thinking the same thing too. The whole interview just seemed awkwardddd. I could just feel the tension. But I don’t know if that’s just me getting something from nothing. haha.
I miss them when they were all happy and joking. Everyone seems so melancholy now. *sigh*

  34. XD says:

i kinda agree above. changmin made everything so obvious.
u can see the division between yoochun and junsu, buh it’s very irrelevant compared to changmin and jaejoong’s. u can see him dodging himself beside yunho.

  35. Dottie says:

We’ve all loved and known TVXQ/DBSK/Tohoshinki for so long that we pick up any and all differences immediately, however trivial and minute.

And yes, they look terribly awkward together. Something has been lost. I am speechlessly verklempt…

My boys are but a shadow of what they used to be…

  36. Jenni Kim says:

Wow, Changmin’s haircut is different, but I think I’ll get used to it :) Unfortunately, yeah, DBSK’s performance was kind of awkward. Hopefully this is a onetime thing rather than something permanent…

BTW, adding Big Bang at the end totally ruined this article :/ Not that I hate Big Bang (I actually totally love them!) but I was expecting full DBSK attention than Big Bang XD
