Korean Food: DDuk

Seoulbeats introduces a section we like to call, “Korean Food” where we tell you the best foods to eat just incase you ever find yourself at a Korean restaurant not knowing what to order or you’re in Korea but don’t know the things that you are putting in your mouth. For our first post, I am going to tackle the best kinds of “dduk.”

DDuk is made up of rice cake and let me tell you, it’s one of my most FAVORITE foods. Since I was kid, I’ve loved all kinds of dduk but I’ve heard in the past that many people whose taste-buds aren’t familiar with Korean food, tend to not like dduk. Now before I go on, dduk is not DUCK the animal so don’t get confused!

Songpyun-The ultimate dduk. Why? Cause it holds a surprise inside. It’s stuffed with “kkhul” which is basically sweetness & sesame seeds mixed together and it is utterly amazing. Koreans eat songpyun on Choosuk.

Mujigae Dduk- This has been a favorite mine since I was a little itty bitty baby. My mom used to buy me this dduk all the time and to this day I call it “rainbow dduk.” It taste purely like rice-cakes but there’s this slight tint of sweetness that just makes you want to jump in the air with glee.

I’ve only introduced you to two types of dduk today but don’t ever be afraid to try this Korean food cause it’s just so good. So the next time someone asks, do you know what dduk is? You’ll know the answer & let them know that Seoulbeats taught you all you know :)

Now I want some dduk…dammit.

I’m Puerto Rican and grew up on Spanish food but I love Asian. I had Japanese food and order some from Japan(candy.rice cakes). Where I live there is nothing but Chinese food. I’m curios about Korean food. i never had Korean food before or try a bite.:( Be better if you post some recipes and stuff like that.Mentioning good Korean food is cool also. I know what to try.^_^

  20. Jenni Kim says:

    Yay! I love dduk!

My favorite is Songpyun ^_^ It’s like the sweetness bursts into your mouth!

  21. debbie says:

We have an asian food place where it’s all the asian foods under one roof. I notice the Korean place never has any business in comparsion to the Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Malay etc places- guess people outside still don’t know that much about korean food.

  22. Izzy says:

  23. greygoose says:

  29. kinella says:

oooh coool! a food section ^^

please, tell us veggies what korean food we can eat

  30. engl says:

@ kinella… vegetarian korean food is kind of limited i think in comparison to other cuisines, but you still get some choice.. you can never go wrong with bibimbap as long as you tell them not to put beef in it.. there’s also a vegeatarian spicy tofu stew called kimchi jjigae.. also something like a vegetable pancake called pajeon..oooo and ddubokki is soo good ..all i can think of right now lol

  31. Blasphemy! says:

It’s great that you guys have started this food section, although, a pronunciation reference would be appreciated! Dduk looks yummy :P

  32. kimchi007 says:

i bought some today from H Mart O_O
I’m a bit confused because it didnt taste that good. the songpyun was rather hard, is it supposed to be? or is it supposed to more like mochi?

Also, the mujigae dduk looked really soft and tender when i bought it but when i tried it, it was hard.

I got all types of dduk from a rice party tray. I love korean food, but is the ddul supposed to be..hard or more..moist?
    (sorry for the long post)><
