Korean American rapper Johnnyphlo is no stranger to the music scene, and now with a new single and music video on his hands, he seems to be well on his way to achieving his superstar dreams. Johnnyphlo marks EMT’s first guest and our crew followed him on his MV shoot for his single, “Just a Friend.” Not only were we part of all the craziness but we sat down with the inspiring artist, got to know him behind his rapper persona and learned his thoughts on Asian Americans breaking out in the music industry. All here on the first installment of EMT.
madd underage drinking going on i seeeee!
anyways, GREAT JOB BIFF! love youuu
what a success! SB really gets around!
Johhnyphlo is pretty impressive!
Lol he just brushed passed the is it me question. He’s funny!
I’m feeling the managers.
I know Asians can DO, I wish you wouldn’t say it like that. Maybe say Asians that are making headway. Because when you say that we just want to show that “Asians can do stuff” makes it seem like Asians are void of anything, but here are a few that can. Reminds of the things that were said about black people…[unable to learn/see at night so they can't fly bombers huh wtf].
—Anyway He’s great very soft spoken. Are you going to keep links so we can go back and check up on these up and comers?
He should be so lucky as to score with you, Ellie!
Haha, but I agree with rooting for Asian Americans to make it instead of, like, BoA, Se7en, etc. who are showing their unfamiliarity with the culture through horribly derivative music that comes off as a cynical and lackluster attempt to anonymously blend into the mainstream American music scene.
DEAR Ellie and SEOULBEATS,
This is why you’re so awesome. Having been on the skeptical side of EMT at first, you converted me 180 degrees!!
I thought this interview had JUST the right amount of HUMOR, SUBSTANCE, AND ENTERTAINMENT VALUE. It was great.
****I hope you REALLY DO TRAVEL OUTSIDE OF NEW YORK – (HINT HINT COME TO CALI SF/LA) – b/c ASIAN TALENT ON WEST COAST IS KOREEEAAAAAZY… okay pun intended and failed. :)
FYI: I scared the bejeeeesus out of roommate when i EXPLODED in LAUGHTER at the “IS IT ME??!” part. It was so loud and forthright.. ahhh LMAO.
Great Job, Congrats, and Keep up the awesome work!
Fighting!
PS: Never felt JohnnyP. was attractive, but HOT DAMN…. NOTHING CUTER THAN A TEDDY BEAR LIKE HIM WHO RAPS!!! **fan girlin’** :)
Loved the first installment of EMT! :)
I think part of the reason why there are so few Asian-Americans in the US music/acting scene is because a lot of them are going back to their motherlands in Asia to make it big. The US is a tough market.
This was great! you gals sure work hard and it shows… keep spreading the love and exposing asian talent. much needed.
what i like is how this is somewhat of a pratcice for all of you girls. Nia with her cinematography, Amy with her english major (i suppose u have a big part in writing the scripts?), and Ellie (didn’t you want to be an actress??) …lol
anyways, good job guys..this was a success!
and Johnnyphlo HOLLA!
HAHA that was pretty funny. Johnny seems down to earth and pretty cool.
his music is pretty nice too!
GREAT JOB SEOULBEATS! THANKS!

Bubbles,
You remembered! haha it IS great to work on something that we all care about and practice for our upcoming professions as a plus. Amy’s a journalism/east asian studies major though lol but still it’s right up her alley.
To everyone, glad you liked it! more great stuff is to come!
great job, ellie. you’re obviously very passionate about this so just keep at it…i’m enjoying it!
I LOVE JOHNNYPHLO AND HIS MUSIC<3
nice nice~
I’m definitely loving what you guys are doing here. I’m actually studying on Asian American Studies and this topic about uprising Asian American artists has been a big interest of mine for quite a while. Keep it up! I look forward to more EMT videos ^^
(my first post on seoulbeats yays :D)
COOL!!!!!!! Way to go girl! I am getting to like Ellie more and more as months go by…lol… Keep up the great work~
I always wonder do you get pay for this. It’s just working and keeping maintenance on the website seems time consuming, and no matter how much you love K-pop… that’s no reason to have done it for free.
hope to see more up-coming asian americans
ex-wongfu productions
Ellie
I like the statement you made at the end involving both Asian and non Asian to support the music. I think that is very important.Music is a universal thing and should be enjoy by all regardless of the artist race.I feel some Asians American artist feel afraid to step out of that comfort zone and take that risk. You gotta be confident and appeal more then those of your own racial community.A lot of blogs DO NOT say that and DO NOT support Kpop stars who come to the states or Asian artist that are here (US) trying to make it.So I’m glad your willing to support your community but share it with others with respect.
I love the first installment of EMT~
It looks like a fun segment. Informative without being boring. Plus it helps us discover/know more about upcoming artists :)
ellie u are so random ha ha. Did u read a script? (not that it matters lol) but i feel so bad that there’s no kpop thingy goin on in my area. Why do u guys have the best? If u eva need a kpop correspondent in Minnesota, think of me!! Kiddin but tis the truth!
