Are you curious about your beloved Big Bang? Okay here’s what has been going on since they left Korea.
1) They had to cancel an appearance after performing one song because over 2000 V.I.P.s attempted to crowd into an area only certified for 400.
2) Tae Yang (Sol) participated (made a statement) briefly in a program remembering the late Michael Jackson. (Who of course was his hero)
3) The boys performed on a few music shows + talk shows+ radio shows + made chit chat with hosts + played silly games etc etc.

Mr. YG will no doubt have them working overtime. YG Entertainment recently released a statement saying that Big Bang will not enter the Japanese market as idols, but as artists. They will bring their brand of Hip-Pop to the screaming fan-girls of Japan one mini album at a time. No offence, but I think the only reason BB is “switching” sides is because they know that no force on Earth can defeat the juggernauts of the Japanese idol industry; Hello!Project and Johnny’s Entertainment.

Am I the only one not feeling Taeyang’s sheep/lamb cap?
well, what the hell do we know about Japanese taste in music. For all we know Big Bang will have better success in Japan than DBSK, and you guys will eat your words right up.
I’m sour if that does happen. But face it, that is not impossible. Heck, Big Bang even got to top 5 of Oricon Weekly faster than DBSK did.
Aih.. can’t help but feel sour about it.
just wanna say that as to the staying power of bb, its not like they really left korea. DBSK did which makes their comeback really outstanding. But hey, they have a lot of fans (guiness certified in fact). Daesung still has FO which helps in maintaining exposure in S Korea plus the upcoming musical of Daesung and Seungri and the collab of Taeyang and TOP for the OST of new drama Friends and of course, TOP’s Iris. G-Dragon co-produced and styles 2NE1. All the members are actually busy and visible to the S. Korea market. As a group, I think what will happen is that they will still be able to do a comeback and do pretty well even if some VIPs converted to 2PM. Coz I personally think, that they’re not just a boy band. They do their own thing but blends/rocks as a group. I’m sure, they already have something in store for Korean fans. :)
i thought BB has reached #2 in oricon chart with heaven? is it not considered a success? O.O
^Yes in the Oricon Daily.
Oricon has many charts. If your release stays on top for as long as a week or a month or a year even, then guess what? You’re pretty much loved by Japan. That’s a small achievement compared to the mountains you have to climb.
DBSK’s recent album has reached #10 for the First Half of 2009. Beating NEWS and KAT-TUN. Now that’s a measure of success that 4 years of sweat, blood, and tears has given them. But still they can’t be considered dominating or topping Japan even now. Not until they reach the level of Arashi, SMAP, EXILE, BoA, Ayumi Hamasaki, and other big names.
BB has a long way to go. And yes, it’s disturbing to see them (and others) take shortcuts when it took DBSK 7 singles to get a #7 in the Oricon Daily. It took them 2-3 years to get to Nihon Budokan. It took 3 years for them to get consecutive #1s in Oricon Weekly. It took them 4 years to get to Tokyo Dome. And right now they hold the record for a foreign artist in Japan to get the most #1s in Oricon. Even now their major releases never get lower than Top 50 in the Oricon charts.
If BB wants true success in Japan, then achieve and do more than what DBSK has done. True DBSK changed their name and made a new fanclub in Japan–because they took Japanese culture seriously. But they didn’t change their music. The DBSK sound has been kept all through these years, even when they experimented with different genres and styles. BB has strayed from their original sound. It’s kind of sad to see.
regarding the cancelled event with more than 2000 fans turning up, its because the management told the official Japanese VIPs fan club just 2-3 days in advance. its not supposed to be a meet-the-mass-fans session. there are ZERO PROMOTIONS about it. of coz they did not expect so many people to turn up.
and what’s up with all the talk about “Big Bang wanting to make it BIG in japan”? from what i see, the members dun look that excited to be in a foreign country. its all about their management. so dun put the blame on them and insist that they really have to be MIA in Korea and focus solely on Japan. i doubt they will risk that. they are just debuting in the mainstream market now and are trying to see if Japanese fans like their music. no one from BB say anything about wanting to reach #1 on Oricon. they are just simply releasing a single, promoting themselves through shows and radio programmes, just like all the rookies out there.
and it is the media that exaggerates everything. i saw a programme introducing BB as the “super popular group in Korea, and to have an interview with them before they become insanely famous”. i agree with the popular part but the insanely famous part have yet to be seen in Japan. so what if there are such publicity for BB? any publicity is better than no publicity. all your so-called “shortcuts” to success. not all Kpop artists who wants to debut in Japan have to go the DBSK way. sure DBSK did put in alot of hard work, and they got the rewards of their success. good for them. but please dun generalise that BB did not put in as much effort as DBSK. if the Japanese media wants to hype them like that, it is not a bad thing. and since when does putting in years of effort = to success? there are way more artists who got popular without putting in as much hard work as others. affinity with the mass public and good publicity are what counts.
Bluefire: Big Bang got #3 on the weekly charts, which is pretty good considering this is their first major single and they don’t have a Jpop sound at ALL. They managed 26,000+ units sold, so that’s a good start.
For all of you little pussies complaining, Big Bang’s trying to enter the Japanese market with a sounds that’s not only not popular, but unique to them, so they have a lot more work to than say Tohoshinki who sold out, became ballad-whores, and pretty much went from decent to producing crappy Jpop. All they did was release a million low-quality singles and hide from Johnny’s on the charts until they eventually found success.
Quite frankly, I hope that they don’t go the Tohoshinki route because I’d rather them actually make good music. Here’s hoping that Japan helps them find their sound.

They beat out Arashi. :)
I don’t understand why people is saying that BB is doing so much better than THSK whent they debuted.
Tohoshinki didn’t promote right away in 2005!
They were in Korea nearly all the time, until the second half of 2006!
By the time that they started the heavy promotion in TV, tours, A-Nation, etc, they were selling the same amount than BB is doing right now.
^ lol, arashi’s single has been out since may, and it’s sold 587,734 copies so far.
@mintt: SS501 got into the top 5 of the Oricon charts faster than DBSK did as well (To answer your question, SS501’s very first single broke into the weekly top 10 and I think it only took them 3 singles to break into the Oricon top 5 weekly, whilst DBSK took a whole year to get their first top 10 and top 5. xD I still remember when DBSK’s Sky made #6 weekly and fandom started throwing confetti).
I feel it’s all about market penetration. BoA opened up the way for Korean artists to cross over and we saw Rain & se7en making sem-successful crossovers. And once DBSK started doing well in Japan, other management companies started bringing over their boybands as well. So it definitely helps that there’s already a japanese market out there now for Korean boybands VS the situation in 2005.
Also, I think BB is getting a lot more media exposure compared to the amount SS501 and DBSK got in the beginning, so kudos to YG! The Mezamashi appearance in particular will help them a lot I think :)
and this is a really random comment… but when I re-watched the performance of 24/7 embedded here I kept being reminded of pre-debut KAT-TUN. No clue why. Maybe it’s all the rapping?
@ Kpopper: :x because it clearly makes sense to compare the daily sales of a new single released in June with that of Arashi’s single that was released in May.
I love BB and DBSK, I see no point in arguing about these sort of stuff. If you really love them, just support them, listen and enjoy their music!
=D
@ Kpopper:”All they did was release a million low-quality singles and hide from Johnny’s on the charts until they eventually found success.” I really want you to apologize to DBSK and all the Cassiopeia out there. DBSK never released any low-quality singles before! All their songs are great!
AND ALSO
please compare the DATE RELEASE between BB and Arashi like Reed had said!
GOOD LUCK TO BB and DBSK keep FIGHTING! >___________<
For all the people that keep saying
“big bang is not at DBSK level”. I completely disagree.
I don’t believe that talent should be measured in the amount of time
that a group has been out on the market. So what if DBSK debuted first?
Groups can be promoting themselves forever and still not break out into a market. If Big Bang has what it takes (and i believe they do)
then they will do just fine in Japan.
why are u people soo mean
wat r u jelouse that even people from U.S.
like then!! huh?? why r u criticizing them
huh?? don’t u have a lifee!! their doing o0kay!!
why be such an intriguer
GET A LIFE DUDE!!!
i love them both…but wut i really disappointed of is that BB management is playing with media by using dbsk’s name…
anyway hwaitiNg BB hwaitiNg dbsk!!!
and the gara gara go has been the song in head…in my head…hohohoho^^
