Pop diva Lee Hyori and YG Entertainment’s head honcho, Yang Hyun Suk were chosen to be the the judges for MNet’s new reality show, “Superstar K”.
Think of it as “American Idol”. Only Korean.
The winner of “Supertar K” will receive 100,000,000 KRW, one year management contract with MNet Media, and the opportunity to debut as a singer.
The auditions for the show has already began. And in true “Idol” fashion, people from all walks of life came to the initial audition including a 90-year old grandpa and an 11-year old boy. Auditions will be held in 8 key cities in South Korea. Participants will go through regional qualifiers, then the top 32 will selected for the preliminaries until the show reach its 10 finalists.
Singer and composer Lee Seung Chul will also join Hyori and YG. Because they need a ‘Randy Jackson’ to complete the group.
Are you a huge fan of talent search shows? Do you think this type of format will be more effective in producing talents (as oppose to the “trainee system”)? Remember “Coke Battle Shinhwa”? Those were good times but whatever happened to the winner, “Battle“?

wouldnt yg be wasting his recruiting talent on this show…..?
its not like they’re going to be under his company.
either way id watch this. maybe they’ll find a susan boyle but then again koreans wont be too happy about an ugly mofo on screen.
but will hyori have time for this given her family schedule and other solo commitments?! she better not give up family for this!!! but yeah, she does fit paula’s shoes in american idol in terms of image. but something tells me she will be the mean-girl ala simon cowell in that show…
where u can watch this show? Link please
it’s summer time again.
seems summer time is for talent reality show.idk
but I really don’t like this.
when the chinese”super girl” show comes the winner “chris lee”
I was reaaaaaly scared.
btw
I like hyori. she is effing hot.
Seems entertaining ^^
The only thing is, I wonder if they’re gonna be searching for a REAL talented person for the music industry, or if it’s just gonna be something like Star King where it’s just whose popular and gets the vote >.>
Maybe they should’ve gotten an actually talented singer “vocals-wise” to judge. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love Hyori, great personality, pretty good dancer, but singing-wise…. not the greatest
don’t forget the mole then, hyori :D
YG seems so laidback. can he really be snippety?
they should get insooni to be the qualified vocal judge:)
Like Oh my god! this is going to be so aweosme.
YG’s a genius and Hyori :DD
well, YG really got a lotta time in his hand, doesn’t he?
the winner should’ve a contract with YG instead, now that’s a career right there LOL
don’t think paula abdul is a “great” singer, too, but then again you don’t have to be a phenomenal singer to be a judg… esp for shows like this.
all you need is the likes of Simon who can make the show INTERESTING.
and hell yes, hyori’ll definitely be Paula Abdul-ing in this show, luv her XD
i just want to see how the constestants will look before and after.

I’m really looking forward to this. If I sang a tad bit better I would’ve thought about trying out too. Lol.
kinda like JYP’s 99% show in 2001? or Supersta survival in 2006?
I’m not too sure about this.
It’d be refreshing it was about real talent and not superficial looks and popularity. We’ll see :/
Great judges and sounds like a good show!
YG + Mnet = partners
Well we’ll see an ex-Seo Taiji and band member back on tv
Daesung doesn’t have to call him
I’m more interested in seeing the real YG Sajang on TV. Heard so much about him and lots of people have done his impression, can’t wait to see how he really talks.
How in the world can Hyori judge “talent” or will this be a show that’s going for the next wondergirls or should I say, the next “hyori”, in other words, no talents with good face?
YG was always hard on Se7en and Taeyang, lol.
I can’t imagine what he’d say to the people who actually really suck. o_o
It’s always nice to see Hyori! ^^
I am a little confused at how Hyori is going to judge people’s vocals when she herself is a sufficiently bad singer…o well…she is fun to look at.
Well at least YG has actually had a music career instead of Simon who thinks he can judge singers when he hasn’t actually done anything in the music industry (vocal wise)

seriously, there are like a bajillion trainees being harvested in the basement of YG, SM, DSP, JYP etc. entertainment taking a ridiculous amount of dance and voice lessons. Does Korea really need a talent search show? I love Hyori (she seems really down to earth), but even I have to admit that her vocals aren’t that great. I mean I don’t think you need good vocals to understand when someone is messing up the song, but she won’t be able to give good constructive criticism. But then Paula Abdul is sort of….not that talented either. Does Yang Hyun Suk have a musical background?
I dont understand why Hyori can’t be a judge. Why? Because she’s not a great singer? Is Simon Cowell a singer -.-”?
“Does Yang Hyun Suk have a musical background?”
:O!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He was part of the Seo Taiji & Boys :O
“there are like a bajillion trainees being harvested in the basement of YG, SM, DSP, JYP etc. entertainment taking a ridiculous amount of dance and voice lessons. Does Korea really need a talent search show?”
maybe YG will plant some of his trainees in the show as final round contestants? :P
lets wait and see where this go….
I’m surprised they haven’t thought of this yet! I’d watch anything with Hyori, but it’s great that this is a talent show! Can’t wait!
Was Paula Abdul a great singer?
Whoohoo! More Hyori! She’s always an awesome host and I can’t wait to see what Korea really has to offer!
i only gonna watch this show because hyori is gonna be in it.
[...] this bit of news that YG and Hyori are going to do an American Idol-esque show is SO. FUNNY. I [...]
@asianromance: you’re kidding right. YG currently has almost none to zero trainees as of the present. do your research a bit before spouting off comments like that.
YG does not hold auditions, the only way to get in is to personally apply for trainee position, or in the case of gong minji, he’ll personally seek you out if you do manage to capture his interest.
but sm, yes, it has tons of trainees since the company likes to holds auditions nearly every year. not sure about dsp and jyp though.
And Yang Hyun Suk had a career in music as opposed to Simon Cowell. He’s part of Seo Taiji and the Boys back then. Does that answer your question of his validity as a judge?
Sounds interesting……at least the judges they’ve picked will draw in the audience!
I will be disappointed if Hyori decides to leave Family Outing for this show!
Have to say they nabbed some pretty awesome judges! Isn’t Wheesung hosting a show like this too?
He should ditch his show and join the panel of judges!
I luvs singing shows very much!
Ahahahha…I can see yg as the simon of the show!!
