Kim Yu-na holds her own with Infinity Challenge

kimyuna_20090418_seoulbeats

In what will be her first official tv appearance since winning the Figure Skating World Championship last month, Kim Yu-na is set to show up on next week’s episode of “Infinity Challenge” to hang out with Yoo Jae Suk and crew.

This will be Yu-na’s second appearance on the show and considering her current status as a national obsession, is expected to bring in very high ratings.  ”Infinity Challenge” is not the only one who is benefitting from the popularity of Kim Yu-na and figure skating in Korea these days.

“Triple”, the upcoming drama series with Min Hyo Rin and Solbi’s new reality show in which she will be “training” as a figure skater are in no doubt the direct result of Kim Yu-na’s successes in the sport.  It must be said though that it is doubtful the public, after witnessing the brilliance of Kim Yu-na’s performances like the one in the clip below, will even be slightly impressed at unseasoned actors/singers vainly trying to emulate not only Yu-na’s pure athleticism but also her charisma and grace.

    Kim Yuna Fighting.

It’s nice to see such an awesome sport as figure skating getting exposure.

  2. asdf says:

she is such an amazing skater.

  3. now0anon says:

Wow she’s freaking amazing. But why am I not surprised that she’s an accomplished singer as well…It’s like a must-be-on-resume in Korea.

  4. Yaleni says:

WOW. she moves like the wind. so effortless!

  5. If U Seek Amy says:

and on top of that she’s still a 90′er O_o
wow, the variety shows are on the roll LOL with Gold Miss and this

  6. If U Seek Amy says:

just adding, it’ll be hilarious as hell, seeing the IC members going all proper XD but it’ll be more fun if they can be crazy as usual

  7. Jeannie says:

    she’s effing amazing

  8. zerohundred says:

Wow, she is AMAZING. I’ve never actually seen her skate before… she’s worth the hype.

  9. Langit Biru says:

You should also put the clip when she singing A Goose Dream. She pwned other idol singer that also in perform together.

  10. Xenia says:

I do not approve. AFTER she wins Olympic gold THEN she can do everything she wants. But to be on such shows while you still did not stop with your sports career is not a good move.

Because if she will not win next competitions her fans will have all rights to ask: “What the fuck were you doing when you should be training?”

After she stops her sports career it’s completely other story, she will be a hero and she will be able to do everything she wants: sing, perform, be an mc – everything. Hell, Alina Kabaeva is in Russian State Duma, does nude photos for MAXIM and whatnot, but she is loved by people because she has Olympic gold and nobody can say that she did not work hard enough.

  11. hoot says:

Xenia, are you retarded? Give her a break. She’s an outstanding student and a world class skater. She deserves to break for fun and fans sometimes. With over-training, you risk injury. If she didn’t do anything like this tv show, you would probably be the one complaining that she’s ungrateful to her supporters.

  12. Emily says:

She definitely deserves all of this attention, and I think it’s great for the sport of figure skating as well.

Regarding the television appearances, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. One thing that should be noted is that this is now the “off season,” so she actually does have more time for such appearances. The major international competitions don’t start up again until the fall, and I highly doubt that appearing on a program like Infinity Challenge is going to make a huge change in her training regimen.

  13. Xenia says:

    @ hoot.
Well, I’m pretty sure that I’m not retarded. Also I see that you are rude and immature.

I totally agree that she is talented skater, quite a good singer and pretty lady. I don’t know about her studies but I believe you with plesure and I’m glad for her.

Also, she can’t do breaks. She can’t stop her training and rest. She is one of the top skaters exactly because she works like crazy. It’s sport, duh, it’s not PE lessons in school.
Also I know that I don’t want her to become like, god forbid, Anna Kournikova. And, as example, when Evgeni Plushenko (who is crazy popular in Russia, hope you know who he is, lol) WON GOLD in Turin and told that he stops his career (and began to be an MC, film in different shows and such) everybody was dissapointed because he “easily” could do 4 years more and participate in next Olympics, there was no other male skater who could compare. But he was all over TV and nobody liked it. Now he wants to return into competitive skating but he is unable because of his hiatus. And he is only 26 but it’s most probably too late for him. Sad.

If one of ultra-talented Japanese girls will win in Vancouver and not Kim Yu-na, every minute Kim spent in front of camera and not on skating rink will be used against her.

I’m die-hard skating fan for more than 15 years so, sorry sorry, but I know what I am talking about.

that ending facial expression definately shouted MRAWWWWWWWW BITCH she has the spunk. I watched one of her slow song performances and it was sooooooo beautiful. Made my heart flutter

  15. Miori says:

Xenia, sick attitude you have there :D
And why would she stop her career even if she wins the Olympics? She’s really young and has a long career ahead of her, and she sure needs and deserves some fun :)

  16. Kay says:

@Xenia, you’re basically saying Yuna should have no life outside of skating. That’s pretty closed-minded and I don’t think anyone could be happy focusing on one thing their entire life, especially if it’s forced.

If Yuna wants to sing, MC, do commercials, and go on shows, that’s her decision and obviously she’s still an amazing skater even while doing things on the side. Give her a break: it’s her life, not yours.

Yuna is awesome. Can’t wait to watch Infinity Challenge with her :)

  17. leejiah says:

haha the TV MC says shes an amazing singer wth

    thats not her song.

  18. Xenia says:

@ Miory – that’s no way I want her to quit after Olympics. I agree that she is young and has almost limitless potential. It’s just common practice between athlets. If we remember ladies:
    1998 – Tara Lipinski (was 15 at that moment) – quit right after Games;
    2002 – Sarah Hughes – quit almost immediately, in 2003;
2006 – Shizuka Arakawa – does not compete anymore.
Well, IF Kim Yu-na wins and breaks this tradition I will be happy.

@ Kay – yes, I basically say it. And it’s a fate of all top athlets, all pro ballet dancers, all people who work with their body on such amazing level. If they did not work every day for insane amount of hours they would be just mediocre sportsmen. They can’t eat what they want, drink what they want. Duh, they sometimes can’t even take medicine while they are in pain. Half of coaches is against dates or any romantic relationships of their athlets. She wants a life – she stops with competitive sport.

In the end, standing on the podium and listening to Anthem of your country pays for all that hardships. That’s a real happiness of athlete, don’t you think so?

Please note, I never told that Kim Yu-na does not train enough or that her skating will be by all means affected if she spends a day filming a show. She is my favourite female skater in the moment. But everything can happen during competitions (cough, Michelle Kwan, cough) and if hopes of whole nation are broken nobody will say “Oh, poor thing”. Damn. We all saw that ugly picture more than once. At least, those of us who monitor sport events.

  20. sogba says:

    that was nice wow

  21. chile says:

Xenia, I’m going to say this as calmly as possible so you don’t feel insulted or attacked.

Kim Yeon Ah has had the best season she’s ever had because her coach has been working with her to peak at the exact time. In previous seasons, she developed injuries on her back because she OVERWORKED herself when she was younger. Her back injury still exists, but her coach has helped her to moderate how much stress she puts on her back when she practices.

You’re right. She’s still an athelete and should always be practicing and working, but there comes a point when you can overwork yourself and no one knows this better than Kim Yeon Ah. She learned this the hard way.

The girl just won world championships. She spends 10 months out of the year in Canada to train. She’s only in Korea for 1 to 2 months. Let her take A FREAKING BREAK! Damn! Do you not understand she’s still practicing and on the ice during her break in Korea right now? So what if she takes half a day off to film a variety show? Can’t she have at least that much to herself?

It would be one thing if all she was doing was doing too many variety shows, but this is just ONE. She’s only doing ONE show.

lol, wow it’s really getting tense here…i mean, i understand you Xenia, but i understand what everyone else is saying also. it’s true that it takes a lot of work to be a top athlete, and also continue in a career after making such a huge impression. but i mean, why be skeptical or critical when nothing’s even happened yet?

@chile, you’re right ^^ it’s just one variety show. and it’s also a great way for her to release her stress. just have fun doing a show.

    I LOVE YEON AH!!! :D

ps. annoys me that they always say her name wrong T____T It’s so stupid. not like her name’s so hard to pronounce. :.sigh.:

  24. J W says:

Sorry Korean chicks,Kim will not win the gold in Vancouver. God has reserved that honor for Michelle Kwan. She can always win gold later.
