Seoulbeats Dictionary Entry 1: Bashing

Hmm, let’s talk about this one. What is bashing? Let’s see what the Seoulbeats crew thinks about it.

Dear Leader, Seoulbeats-

Bashing vs. Constructive Criticism

Sometimes its hard to detect the difference between bashing and constructive criticism and I’m guilty of both, but in an attempt to keep my new year’s resolution of being nice to kpop celebrities, here’s my stab at differentiating the two.

An example of bashing would be, “Rain can’t speak English, so hence he should not even try”  Or, “Sohee can’t sing to save her own life”.
But if I turn that into constructive criticism it would be “Rain should think about hiring a new ESL teacher before trying to speak English again.”  or “Sohee should practice her vocals before turning her audience deaf with her sub-par performance”.

I’ll try to keep up with the latter…

Ciaociao-

Kpop is meant to be bashed, not necessarily because everything’s funny, but because the fans take everything way too seriously. Media outlets and fans worship the ground that kpop celebs walk on, and frankly, it’s disgusting. Especially when the kpop celeb is completely talentless. *cough* Sohee *cough*.

Ellie-

While my fellow writers give you detailed and comprehensible definitions of the word “bashing” I will give you three reasons that make bashing possible.

Sohee, Heechul, and Rain’s english.

Many of you tend to bash us because we bash on kpop artists. But if you pay close attention we only bash those who ask to be bashed. Talentless, annoying, stuck-up, and boring stars give us endless reasons to bash. And no matter who you are you’ve bashed on someone once in your life. Whether its been in your head, to your friends, or on a site, you’ve bashed! We respect artists or entertainers like Epik High and Jung Woo Suk, who have proven they have talent. But let’s say Tablo started making out with boys when he claims he is straight, then we would bash him because that’s just effing ridiculous. Or let’s say Jung Woo Suk started singing when he clearly can’t but is doing it for show, then we’d bash him. I mean, let’s be serious, if you suck then we’re gonna bash. And to all the Wonderfuls, VIPs, Cassieopianos etc., you guys bash on a daily basis, or shall I see every minute of every day.

I bash, you bash, we all bash for icecream.

Get it? Great.

Daysgoby-

Bashing has turned into this weird, offensive politically un-internetcorrect term for netizens. People think that “bashing” is just anything negative about any celebrity, but it’s not. All the celebrities that we deal with in the Kpop world are paid to do what they do. How much they’re paid and how their entertainment companies treat them are besides the point — but the truth of the matter is that they’re paid to do a job. If they don’t do that job well, then it’s fair game for any of us audience members to point that out. There’s a fine line between saying something negative that’s unjustified and uncalled for, and saying something that is proven true every day. Just because you might have been endeared by a particular celebrity’s actions doesn’t mean what they do is the “standard.”

And after all, Kpop wouldn’t be Kpop if everybody made love to every inch of the ground that celebrities walk on. I’m not saying to have fun in other’s misery, but those “epic fail”’s are what brings the lols and keeps Kpop afloat.

For me, Illdielaughing,

Bashing is unnecessarily and obsessively making derisive statements about someone. Bashing is not pointing out what is the truth or someone’s truthful opinion. Example of an opinion: “TOP is unattractive*”. An example of bashing: “TOP is the ugliest thing to ever exist on this earth, he’s a disgusting little maggot with lard for brains.” Another example of an opinion: “Gummi really can’t sing. I can’t stand her voice**”. An example of bashing: “OMFG Gummi is the worst effing singer ever!!!! I wish she would just die!” Are you catching on? No? Well, here’s a last example of the difference. Opinion: “Jeon Do Yeon, is a really bad actress. I don’t understand why she won at Cannes***”, and bashing: “Jeon Do Yeon is an ugly butter face and watching her act is like watching an Elephant poop.”

I have a right to not like something and you have the right to be offended. That’s what’s lovely about freedom of speech. What puts a bummer on that is dumb people, saying dumb things, trying to make other people look dumb and not realizing how dumb they themselves are. That’s what leads good people to bash. Just trying to ram their point home. But not every negative thing is bashing, that word is SORELY overused.

So what is the reason for the incorrect overuse for the word bashing? One word (a compound word, if you will): BUTTHURT.

What’s your definition of “Bashing”?

* An example. I actually think TOP is the hottest member of Big Bang but, I have to illustrate, yeah?
** In my opinion, Gummi is one of the best pop singers in Korean mainstream music. But once again, illustrating a point.
***Jeon Do Yeon is the BOMB at acting, but I’m illustrating… Well, I believe you get it, right?

I agree with your all different definitions!
    cheers!

seriously, this blog is on korean entertainment…. i dont understand why some ppl got so worked up… chillax
if you really cant even take harmless jokes abt your idol then I suggest you just read the newspaper or your idol’s fansite and not this blog

    @lay

you are a genius. im glad other people like you can not only realize, but also express what many others are blind to regarding “bashing”.

the definition of bashing will always change but for the time being, bashing certain idols is insulting to fans, neutral netizens, and whoever is able to see the insulting comments (idols do read comments left from netizens. ex: tiffany @soshfied). the basis of bashing: insults, will unlikely differ drastically over time but its a matter of how they accept the insults that determine how serious it is. regardless, an insult is an insult. anymore straight forward?

    Right on people !!!

Koreans are just not talented in general .
Only copy other nations, they should do what they do best ,martial arts and being nerds, not dancers or singers.

So Koreans .Stop trying to be Black ,or White .Just go do some math …

  4. you should take your own advice says:

I wouldn’t mind the repetitive “criticisms” you guys dish out all the time if you wouldn’t get so butthurt anytime someone leaves a rude comment. If your going to bash, oh I mean “criticize”, a popular artist people are going to disagree with you. So please, just chill out and step off your pedestal.

  5. Ashleigh says:

@plano: Stupid, much? I don’t know if you’re being sarcastic, but your post is totally irrelevant to the discussion (and racist).

Unless you’re trying to provide a legit example of bashing. If so, bravo. :-/.

  6. oy says:

“But let’s say Tablo started making out with boys when he claims he is straight, then we would bash him because that’s just effing ridiculous.”

He’s doing it for a specific song? That’s like bashing someone because he insulted someone else in a Dangyunhaji game. Don’t get me wrong, I could care less if you bash. It’s just the reason you give here is just effing ridiculous.

  7. PSSS says:

theres no reason to bash someone just because of their english thats stupid.

  8. great view, i think the same
