“Gee” Pumashock Remix on Star King

The Pumashock remix of “Gee” caused a stir earlier this month. The artist in the R&B remix of the hit song by SNSD, Natalie White will be making her first ever appearance on Korean Television.

White will be on SBS “Star King” on March 7th (readily available on YouTube a few days later). She is widely expected to show off her already proven vocal talent and probably put some of the girls to shame (cue hatemail from fans to oniontaker).

It’s not the first time White has received attention in covering a Korean song, with Hyori’s “U-Go-Girl” hitting the front page of Naver. Her remix rendition of “Gee”, however, has well over one million views and counting in the space of fifteen days.

Within a week, she caught huge national media attention. With a slower tempo and R&B rhythm and singing style she’s certainly impressed the SNSD girls who immediately asked TV news networks to contact Natalie, who uses the name “Pumashock” on YouTube.

She has received a lot of praise from netizens for the talent involved in creating her own instrumental backing track, chorus and post-production, with one commenting “with her extensive list of cover songs, she’s not just another one riding on the coat-tails of Gee’s success.”

I’m happy for her. She said she wanted to go to Korea and be an entertainer. I just hope this will open up the Black/Asian relations in Korea. Maybe there will be less stereotyping with more exposure and contact with other races.

she is really good! can’t believe i’m listening to her version on repeat and I’m by no means a “Gee” fan

That’s awesome! I’m not trying to be a hater, but I hope that she realizes that Korea is not like anything you see on t.v. and that there are still plenty of people in Korea that have this “thing” against Black people for some reason(s).

But whatever good for her, I hope that she is just prepared to take the on all the Korean netizens, and all they have to say because as we all know they have no problems with speaking their minds!

  5. fobulous says:

man, i like pumashock’s version better and that aznkid is pretty good too!

  6. fobulous says:

cherbear…s. korea seems to be evolving into a more open minded society as evident with the positive feedback of this person’s remix. however, i understand that liking someone or something doesn’t equal full acceptance.

  7. houngface says:

Awesome. Looking forward to seeing her skills live.

  11. skimfan says:

Why go to Korea and showcase your talent, when it’s obvious they only like plastic, gimmicky, no-talent groups? This is what gets me, what a waste! She could do so much better…europe, america? Maybe it’s a challenge, or fulfillment of a goal thing and then she moves on to something real. This is my hope.

  12. riki says:

i want to debut in korea too. hopeful she will open doors for us nonasians/blacks. im a singer/dancer/writer. remember the name son rin woo

  13. Jolly says:

    aznkid own was awesome.
Some Koreans still hate black people, so it’ll be a little hard for her.
Besides, I don’t think I would like her if I was SNSD. You have all this antis saying “Your version is cool, and better. SNSD Disband!!” then you have fans saying “Your version is better than orginal Gee, but SNSD still rock!!”
I would feel offensive over that. I wouldn’t like the girl. In my head I would think “I spent more than 5 months trying to rehearse the dance, promote the song, plan the song, and everything else. Then comes this girl that steals the spotlight from us. I DON’T LIKE HER!!”

Not hating on her cause she stole my dream. I truly can’t lie, her version was good but wasn’t good enough. Original Gee lives in my heart. I listened to it twice and got sick of it. Ain’t that good.

  18. sogba says:

    i wish her luck
    u go girl

  19. Eprinces says:

Good for her if this is what she wants. But I’m still surprised to see that they are accepting her regardless her being non-Korean. Goodluck to her!!!

  26. oh-yes says:

I don’t like this version that much (nor the original Gee song) but I admit its catchy! I love her other covers though! I’m happy for her that she can go on Star King and showcase that many nonasians like kpop!! Good for her. and there is prejiduce everywhere, does that mean we should stop aimimng for what we dream for? no way~!

  27. cherbear says:

No one is saying you shouldn’t go for your dreams…but the point that I’m trying to make is that I’m an african-american female that has lived in Korea before…so I know about the stereotypes that go on there…as someone else said above her talent does seem like it would be a waste in Korea…because most of the kpop scene is filled with plastic manufactured pop acts, and ppl like Tasha whose half-korean had a hard time making there…so ppl don’t forgot about ppl like Tasha and Insooni and Sonya who are all part-black so there has been others in the kpop scene who were black~

good for her she’s getting the attention that she wanted so good luck to her!

  28. oniontaker says:

    planning to sub this episode

  29. AznKid says:

Pumashock is SOOOO SEXY! I’m a Korean guy and I love her version of “Gee” 100X better than the original. The original by those plastic orean girls (SNSD) is getting so annoying! I can’t wait for Pumashock to show them how it should be done on Star King. Can’t wait. Pumashock FIGHTING! ^^
