Best Show Ever (next to Seoulbeats Weekly): Family Outing
What is “Family Outing“? Simply put, it’s 80 minutes of pure hilarity.
Currently one of the most popular variety shows in Korea, “Family Outing” follows an eclectic group of eccentric celebrities who spend a weekend on a farm and tackle rural living. Permanent family members are Yoo Jae Suk, Lee Hyori, Big Bang’s Daesung, Yoon Jong Shin, Kim Jong Kook, Park Yejin, Kim Sooro, and Lee Chunhee. Each week, the show features a guest. Previous star-studded guests include DBSK’s Yunho and Junsu, Big Bang’s G-Dragon and TOP, SNSD’s Tae Yeon and Yoona, Rain, Daniel Henney, Cha Tae Hyun, and Fly to the Sky’s Brian.
In each episode, the family completes chores, makes breakfast and dinner, and passes the time playing intense, dirty games. Cheating during games is a given. In fact, it would be un-family-like if they didn’t cheat. Frankly, it’s incredibly entertaining to watch Lee Hyori attempt to fling herself across a puddle, fail miserably, and then resort to faking an injury to win.
The family lowdown:
Kim Sooro:
Progressively becoming more insane as the show continues, Sooro started out with a respectable image. He’s still considered the “game devil” and owns at every game. He hates to do work and has become “Stepmother Kim” to poor Cinderella Chunhee who is relentlessly ordered around.
Sooro’s original manliness has been reduced to ashes due to his frequent use of furry pink bunny earmuffs (which he’s fondly attached to). I’m sure he’s still scary to Chunhee, probably even more so in those earmuffs.
Yoo Jae Suk:
What can I say? It’s MC Yoo! There’s no one else so eager to humiliate and embarrass themselves on national TV than him. From being dunked headfirst into water and always coming in last during sleeping position rankings, MC Yoo will do anything to make people laugh.
Yoon Jong Shin:
Known as the sickly elder, Jong Shin willingly humiliates himself during games right alongside everyone else. Mostly, everyone just makes fun of him for being old. Even when the family members themselves aren’t mocking him about his sickly age, the screen captions usually are.
Lee Hyori:
Lee Hyori started out with a cool image. After all, she’s freaking Lee Hyori! The nation’s sexy queen! But just like that, she destroyed it.
Super competitive, she can’t stand losing. In the beginning, she lost a lot of games to which the family dubbed “the Hyori effect”. Since then, she’s remedied this problem by cheating. She will now resort to almost any method of winning, even risking butthurt fangirl hatred by flinging mud at Shin Ki boy Junsu during a race.
Other than failing at games, Hyori spends her time ordering everyone around. ‘Fraidy cats Yoo Jae Suk and Daesung especially are constantly dodging Hyori’s wrath.
Lee Chunhee:
Accident-prone Chunhee’s role on the show is to get bullied by everyone. He was saved briefly when Kim Jong Kook joined as a new family member. But Jong Kook quickly realized the situation, made a 180-degree turn, and became known as “the little stepmother”.
For 80% of the show, Chunhee looks confused. For the other 20%, he’s either laughing his head off or being a total dork. It’s hard to believe that a guy like this actually has the highest IQ out of all the family members.
Chunhee’s most hilarious moments are when he’s forced to pick vegetables with Stepmother Kim. Due to these scenes, he’s become known as the “King of Vegetable Picking”, which is kind of pathetic. Then again, pathetic sums up Chunhee’s character.
Daesung:
As a member of one of the hottest idol groups Big Bang, you would expect Daesung to be a stereotypical idol, right? Nope. That only lasted for about half the very first episode. Since then, he’s managed to completely destroy his coveted idol image, and MC Yoo’s partially to blame. Daesung and MC Yoo are known as “Dumb and Dumber”, Daesung being the dumber half. They are utterly hilarious despite some of their jokes making absolutely no sense at all.
Park Yejin:
Described as “sweet and savage” on “Family Outing”, Yejin’s highlight scenes involve her catching, cutting, skinning, and killing some type of animal.
The guys liked Hyori more than Yejin at first, but as Hyori gradually became the scary one that bossed them around, Yejin grew to be the popular one because she was all-around good at everything.
Since then, she’s learned from Hyori. Yejin now orders everyone around and cheats at games.
Kim Jong Kook:
Semi-new, Kim Jong Kook joined the family in episode 19. Think of him as the long lost brother.
He started out with his muscle-man han namja image, but has completely lost it. At first, he was considered to be Sooro’s rival in games, but for a long time now, he’s been in a “game slump” and loses every single time.
Strong and silent, Jong Kook is awkward and doesn’t have many lines on the show. His major parts mostly consist of MC Yoo accusing him of being in love with either Hyori or Yejin (or occasionally Yoon Eun Hye!).
Hyori tortures him and everyone else laughs. His only friend is Daesung because together, they make up “the small-eyed brothers”.

Love FO, the common theme seems to be:
Start off with a good image and then end up butchering it through series of embarrassing games, and early morning screen time.
not a big fan… everything seems so scripted….
this is fun to watch once in a while

i watched an episode before and i find it kinda predictable. really the only people who had most screentime was mc yoo and hyori. kinda boring

family outing is dopeeeeeeee. it’s super funny and you can tell the permanent members are getting closer to one another genuinely instead of putting on a front for the cameras.
Agrees with Gelatin. FO hilarious at times but it doesn’t hold a candle to 1N2D. FO recently started incorporating their production staff more, influenced probably by… 1N2D.
Also, why is nobody subbing Infinity Challenge on the regular?! MC Yoo and Park Myung Soo ppl!! together, even.

i love the “characters” and personas on this show, but it’s too scripted and not spontaneous enough for me, though it does have its moments!
